Strength:

Excellent picture & sound. Dialogue enhanceer. Simple to Excellent picture & sound. Simple to use.

Weakness:

None.

Picture & sound quality are first rate. Dialogue enhancer is a fantastic feature. Sometimes the sound effects and music can overwhelm the dialogue in a movie, and this boosts it up so you can every word that is uttered.

Remot control is not as bad as everyone says. It does exactly what it needs to do. Besides, once you start watching a movie, you shouldn't need to adjust anything anyway. All you need is the pause, play, stop & menu buttons.

Excellent value. Can't be beat for twice the price.

Strength:

Remote, picture

Weakness:

No zoom, can't tell how much time left on dvd

Wanted to buy rv-30 but local store did not have any and so got rv-65 which seems to be same as rv-30 plus decoder built in.

Can anyone tell me if rv-65 is indeed same as rv-30 (except for decoder).

Thanks.

Strength:

Model RV-31K: Solid Construction, Plays CD's, DVD's, CDR/RW's, MP3-coded CD's, Video CD's. PLayed Gladiator & Jurassic Park Flawlessly. Great Video AND Audio.

Weakness:

I seriously can't think of any, Panasonic got all the kinks out of the RV30 model with this update, the RV-31

This is a great player. All of the possible worries that came with the RV30 have been fixed with this model. I spent $180 at ecost.com, and there is free shipping if you spend atleast $400! This worked out great since I was shopping for a reciever as well (I got the Harman Kardon AVR 110). The two together along with a pair of Paradigm Monitor 3's make for, in my opinion, audiophile level equipment at a fraction of the price. I did a lot of research and testing, and I think you'll find this player is truly solid. I don't care much for all of the modes. All I care about is the fact that I can use this thing for any type of media (CD,DVD,MP3) and that it puts out QUALITY audio and video.

Thanks Panasonic,
Rahul

Strength:

GREAT PICTURE and AUDIO Quality, plays CDR, CDRW and MP3's
great price

Weakness:

No Coxial output

I got this DVD player (RX-V31-Made in Japan) from Sears and thanks to someone on this site stating that Sears has a price maching policy with online stores and so I took the price quote from D&B Online and I got this palyer at $159.00. I have played The Matrix, GLADIATOR, The Mummys and couple of movies in HINDI (Indian Laungauge) and it just works fine without any problems as I have seen bad reviews about SONY and Toshiba models on this site. The Picture and audio quality is great. It shook my whole house while watching The Matrix. It plays CDR's CDRW's and MP3's wihout any problem.

Very very good player in the price I paid campared to Sony and Toshiba with same features, they cost at list $500 and up.

Weakness:

Feels a little flimsy

I read the reviews here on the 30 and called to make sure the 31K was the same basic product. I haven't been disappointed. The color reproduction is awesome and the player is quiet, compact and made in Japan (most things these days are made in China and the stuff is usually junk IMHO or Malaysia and the stuff is hit or miss) so I suspect it will be as durable as my Panasonic VCRs which range from 10 to 5 years in age and have never missed a beat or lost a feature. I am thoroughly impressed with the performance of this product after seeing the units some of my friends have purchased for $20.00 cheaper (one of which has already been returned) and those who've gone all out and spent big bucks ($399.00 is a lot to ME!) and didn't get much more than I did.

This review is for the DVD-RV31U-K!!!!!!
Good stuff at a great price. Best of all plays all disks without missing a beat. I heard about this player and asked Sears to special order. Sound is better than other DVD players I have used. The amazing this is that the player packs a lot of features at its price range. Final word clean and super nice !!!!!

Weakness:

Little buttons on remote.

Review is for the new Panasonic RV31.

Well, this is the best DVD player I have used so far. At first I was a little skeptical when I saw how much the player claimed to do. I was burned big time by that crappy Apex unit that claimed to have every feature. That Apex was such a piece of junk. As for the RV31, it holds its own very well. I was sick of the Pioneer 525 I had, for a couple of reasons and I thought I'd try out the RV31 and decide on whether to throw the Pioneer up on eBay.

First off the Panasonic just looks better. The orange lettering on the Pioneer is ugly. I prefer the blue lettered LCD screen on this unit much better. :)

Secondly, the speed of this player is fantastic. Moving to the next chapter is almost instantaneous and the DVD loads quite fast also. The DVD tray is also very smooth when inserting and ejecting discs.

Third, I can also say that the picture is quite good. There were some things on this unit that I never noticed using the Pioneer unit. I noticed most of them in The Matrix, the Panasonic seems to show more detail.

Fourth, the remote could use some work. The buttons are pretty small for a man's fingers, in my opinion. Its really the same remote as the older A120 version, just a little tweaked. This is the only fault really, but I have a "digital command module" that I use to control all my A/V units anyway, so its not a real issue.

Finally, I have yet to notice any layer pauses on this unit. The A120 I had a couple of years ago was also immune to this annoyance. I hate those pauses, its annoying as hell. I haven't been through my whole DVD library yet, but so far there aren't any pauses.

In conclusion I highly recommend this unit to anyone. I wouldn't have gotten it if I didn't know about the Sears price match thing, so I guess its good that I did, this is a great unit. Beware though, not all Sears stores do the price match. One of my friends tried to get another Sears in the area to price match online and they refused. At least the store near me did, but they did charge me $20 for shipping. I think that's fair. It all depends on whether you want to wait for it to be shipped to you or get it sooner and pay tax.

The only reason I didn't give this a 5 in Overall Rating was because I have been into DVDs for a long time and this wasn't an extreme enhancement over the previous DVD player. Anyone going from a VCR to DVD will think this is worth a 5. I'd give this one a 4.5. :)

I also wanted to try out the Sony 360 DVD player, but I don't feel that I need to at this point. This unit rules. Please email me with any questions or concerns, I'll be happy to help. That is all.

P.S. I also bought a Sony STR-DE845 receiver that I'll be reviewing in a couple of days. I haven't had time to test it out fully yet. I don't even know how to use the remote yet. Speaking of the remote on that thing, you do get the two way remote with this unit, I guess the receiver just can't do the two way communication.

My System (now):

Panasonic RV31 DVD player
Pioneer PD-F907 101 Disc CD changer
Sharp VCR (hardly ever used)

Strength:

Video quality

Weakness:

Low price (I almost passed on it)

This RV31 model met and surpassed all my expectations of the DVD format. Panasonic does review its products, unlike many other companies. The returned Toshiba 2300 was completely unacceptable. Best Buy was overstocked with Toshiba 2300 but was out of Panasonic RV31. I am not surprised. Panasonic allows very nice tuning of brightness, which I couldn't do with the Toshiba unit. I personally hate pitch black scenes, when I know that on VHS those scenes looked normal. I felt I had to write this review instead of watching my DVD movies, which I now actually want to do. However, Panasonic needs credit for this product, because movie fans need good products such as these.

BE AWARE THAT THE MOST RECENT REVIEWS ARE FOR THE NEW DVD-RV31.

It adds CD-R/W and MP3 playback as well as a few more enhancements over the RV30.

Strength:

Good Picture and colour reproduction, Easy setup menus and good onscreen controls, Excellent sound

Weakness:

there are some anti-aliasing and flutter issues, but I really only notice if I am nit-picking about it

I wanted a good entry level Dvd player, and I found it in this model. It has a nice look, a quiet tray, and from my listening postition I can't hear it playing at all.

Visually the colour reproduction in the movies is very very nice. It's got a good clear and crisp picture that I liked, the other players I looked at had a softer picture. Thats not a bad thing, I just liked the RV30's the most. Setup was a breeze and the onscreen menus are simple nice and functional.

The sound is also very good. Cd-audio pretty good. My cd-player sounds much better, but I don't play cd's in the dvd so it's not an issue. The sound the player puts out in DD and Dts is incredible.

if your looking for a good stright up functional dvd player, the rv30 is definately worth it.
