Great picture and sound

Weakness:

none

This is a solid DVD player. It has great picture quality, 5.1 outputs, S-video, Optical output, and can play DVD, CD, CD-R, CD-RW, and MP3. I haven’t experienced any skipping or layer change delays. The remote is decent and the manual is easy to follow and understand. DVD’s just explode to life and I couldn’t be happier. Hook up a receiver with optical audio cables and a 5.1 (2 front, 2 rear, 1 center and the .1 is your powered subwoofer) speaker set up and you’re in the house. Although this system is DTS and Dolby Digital ‘ready’ it doesn’t have the DTS and Dolby Digital ‘decoding’ built in. Which is fine, since it is better to have the DTS and Dolby Digital ‘decoding’ built into your receiver. For those of you with only 2 speakers (right and left) this unit has an Advanced Surround Sound feature that really gives you the ‘surround sound effect’ even though you only have 2 speakers. Before I bought my 5.1 speaker set up, I used this feature and it was excellent. As for the ‘Dialogue Enhancer’ feature, I couldn’t really tell that this did anything to the dialogue. I would definitely recommend this player to anyone wanting to get on the ‘DVD train’. I researched DVD players and read many reviews and this player just stood out and for the price, you can’t go wrong. Enjoy!

Strength:

Good stable product. Everything that a Sony product is suppose to be. Just about every hookup that one needs for digital audio cable, and S-video output.

Weakness:

This product has one weakness, but it is a larg one at that. This DVD player does not play DVD's that have a golden underside verses ones tht have a silver underside. To me, that is a large problem for the fact that I am sure more and more DVD's will begin to be manufactured that have thgis golden underside to them.

Due to the problem of this DVD player not being able to play DVD's with a golden underside I would have to give this product a 6 out of 10. Even though it has dolby digital 5.0 and so on and so on, this product serves only one function.....To play DVD's and it doesn't even do that when dealing with DVD's that have a gold underside. If anyone else has this problem and knows the remedy, please e-mail at bejohns5@vt.edu. I would greatly appreciate your input as well as a possible remedy. Thank you

Strength:

Very crisp picture and excellent sound

Weakness:

Remote not user friendly. Have to turn off player to view special features (very annoying)

Player is a good buy if you don't mind the headaches of trying to view the special features of the DVD's. Other than that it is well worth the money.

remote and other things see review

This is just a follow up to my review from dec27. This is a
great entry level dvd. Great picture and sound. But the weakness is in remote, very hard to use. Also someone said
that they had to use the menu to get to the next chapter. I also found this goofy. The other ones I tried out, all you had to do was push the number for chapter and it went there.
An example of this was I saw a movie and when I forgot to store the last spot. I kinda of knew the chapter to go to.
When I pushed in the number it would not go. I called Panasonic since it was not listed in manual. They said some
disc allow you to do this and some don't. Y'know they were right. I only wished I had the movies with me that it worked with the disc I had rented when trying out other players. I did have two different movies and again, one movie allowed you to put in the chapter by pushing in the number from keyboard on remote. The other you had to go to the menu. Also I wish that it was easier to adjust the settings. It is not as easy to adjust sharpness and other items as other reviewers have said.

I guess it sounds like I might not totally like this machine. But it still has great sound and picture. I still have yet to figure out if I will return it. Probably not.
But these are some little irrating things. I thought others
should be aware of. But for the price and picture and sound it is still a very good entry level dvd. Maybe someone from
panasonic reads these reviews. I am not holding my breath.
But you never know. And maybe next year Panasonic will have
the best remote out there! Yahoooooooo

Great picture and sound quality

Weakness:

Cheap remote

The RV31 is an awesome dvd player. It has a extremely clear picture even using the composite output. The sound is great too. When I first played some cds on it I couldnt believe the difference in quality that digital makes. I wanted to go through and listen to all my cds. I tried jazz, rock, rap and they all were crystal clear. The mp3 and cd-r capability are a good extra especially in this price range. Only problem with this player is that you have to really push down on the remote buttons to get them to respond.
I would recomend the RV31 to anyone who is lookin for a dvd player with excellent picture and sound and who wants to get all the extras for an awesome price.

plays many formats (mp3, vcd, etc.)

Weakness:

Does not play damaged disks well.

Purchased product to replace 3 year old dvd player. I was mainly looking for a player that handled damaged/problem dvds well. This player couldn't even get to the menu. I have a test disk that does not play well on my 3 year old panasonic but plays flawlessly on a 1 year old oritron dvd-100. i'm searching for a player that can play the disk flawlessly. The rv31 is not the answer to my problem.

Strength:

Easy to use, especially for the electronics novice, best DVD player for the money in its class

Weakness:

POOR REMOTE

This unit is the ideal first DVD player for someone just entering the DVD world. It is simple to set up and operate. And, the price couldn't be better. This is the best DVD player for its price in the non-progressive scan market. I looked at the Sony DVP-N300 which replaced the DVP-S330, that I happen to own. I just wasn't impressed the N300 for the price ($199), especially when sitting side by side with this Panasonic. The eye appeal of the Panasonic makes you want to study it further.

I purchased this unit for my parents as a Christmas present. Within hours after opening it, they had it hooked up to their 20" Zenith television and were watching "Enemy At The Gates." I sat and watched the movie with them. The picture was crisp and clear, and the sound was fine.

As many others have complained about this model, the remote is lacking. When shopping for a DVD player this Christmas, I was disappointed with the remote as it lacks the ability to control a television. It only controls the DVD player and its looks are nothing special. Since the remotes of other brand DVD players generally are TV/DVD remotes, Panasonic loses one star in the overall rating category. However, its value rating stays at 5 stars. It is the best value on the market.

Geat sound and picture

Weakness:

Remote SUCKS just like others and mags have spoke about. You must aim it right at machine for it to work. It takes too long to open drawer. The JVC S45GD remote is better. More option buttons need to be added to remote.

I looked at the JVC S45GD it was a good model, slim design
and great remote. I read about this model in sound and vision and they said it was not as good as others. When they
had run their lab test to the componet video hookups. I tried it in the store and their review had me thinking about
buying the JVC. So I got the panasonic and noticed a little
bette picture, but definitely better sound. As for weakness
the remote just sucks.

I will be using this for mainly seeing movies. I just have it hooked up to TV. For the price in its class and the options that it has, it was worth it. If I hook it up to stero system then it will be better. I am using composite
hook up right now with radio shack conect. It seems to be
good. I will probably buy componet video cables but not monster ones. I gave it four stars cause of remote also!

Although I've used different types of DVD Players, this one is my first and can't be anymore pleased with a DVD player. My roommate has a Samsung that often "hangs up" while watching a movie and can be very irritating. I've purchased a few Panasonic electronics in the past and had no complaints, but this DVD player is running exceptionally well. It is very quite and the picture is outstanding. A great buy for people who don't want to spend a large amout and still get great quality.

Nice looks, easy setup, price, plays MP3's. Under $200

This is my first DVD player. Read many reviews on this site and decided on this model. Had it hooked up and viewing my first DVD in about 10 minutes. Running S-video and optical audio through Onkyo 777. Remote is decent but will use my learning remote from Onkyo. Dynamic compression is nice for late night viewing. I'm using an older (7 years) Sony 27" Trinitron and the image is very nice, but now that the 5.1 and DVD are in place I think I'll upgrade the TV.
