Strength:

Very cheap, great picture and sound

Weakness:

Crappy remote

I got this from CC as an open box item for $180. I was pretty happy about that and got a surprise when I hooked it up and opened up the cd tray. It turns out that they had a demo disk of "A bugs life" that they had forgotten to take out. I have had the unit for about 5 months and have not had any problems with picture quality or playing any dvds. The 5.1 DD sounds great with my Onkyo reciever coupled with polk everything speakers (except for the Velodyne sub). I looked at the sony and toshiba(forgot models) but couldnt tell much of a difference and the price for this discontinued unit was amazing. Great buy!

Strength:

Shell is all metal.

Weakness:

no composite outputs. doesn't play cdr's or mp3.

I purchased this dvd player after divx was terminated. Circuit city was getting rid of them for $279. they originally sold for $399. the unit's construction is pretty solid. i like the all metal shell. i also purchased the 3 year service policy. i did this knowing that new technology is not perfected and chances are i would have a problem within 3 years. i was right. about 15 months after using the dvd player i noticed pixelization and long delays between layer changes on dual-layer dvd's. particularly "the world is not enough". the casino scene was unplayable. i brought it in for servicing at circuit city and they replaced the optical pickup which costs $124. luckily i didn't pay a dime because of the service contract. we'll see how long it lasts now. i still have over a year of my service contract left. my next dvd player will be a pioneer.

Strength:

Worked good for about 13 months

Weakness:

Quit working after warranty was up.

This player started getting pixelized images recently. Then it started not recognizing some disc's. Now it won't even read DVD's at all. It says that the player can't read the disc.

CD's work fine, but forget about DVD's.

Buy a Sony. I'm going to. It just figures that the warranty is up, and it stops working.

Strength:

Dolby Digital/DTS sound and picture. multiple slo-mo fwd and back

Weakness:

no stand out weakness

I've been using my player a little over a year and have had no faults. The pixelation that most people talk about really seem to only happen on older DVD's or really dark areas of some dvd's, but as a whole the picture quality is as good as any other mid-ranged player. The sound is pretty damn good. I have a pioneer 509s and for the under $1,000 market, the combination of the 2 is pretty top notch. As far as the remote goes, I like a less bulkier remote. I feel as though I can access all of the features with ease. I bought mine at CC and got the display model for $219 a year ago, which was and sitll is a great deal. Sure there are some new DVD players out there that I would like to have, but until I can upgrade to a big screen Digital tv and the new 7.1 THX receivers I think all is fine for the next year.

Strength:

Aesthetics, Clean, Crisp Picture.

Weakness:

Remote, Time Remaining.

I just got this now-discontinued Panasonic DVD-X410. DIVX? So what? I immediately slipped in "Matrix" and it played the movie wonderfully. No pixel or soundtrack delay of any kind. What a deal for $220 from Circuit City, brand new and with a little haggling. Dolby Digital and DTS pass. Virtual Surround Sound. Can't ask for more. Will update if anything arises... Only minor minus: the retro looking remote.

This is an excellent DVD player. It has a revised front panel compared to the A110 and the A310. It adds the menu and setup function keys to the front panel as the Sony DVD players do. This is very logical in that the remote shouldn't be needed for minor setup procedures. I have watched many DVD and Divx movies and they both are equal in quality on both video and audio, that being EXCELLENT! The same can't be said about the RCA and Zenith players which had good DVD performance but poor Divx performance. The Divx discs displayed the famous rain drop effects and had bad pixellation. The dual layer problem has been non existant so far in my viewing. The sales people have seen problems in other players but Panasonic and Sony have proved to be the best available for performance and reliability. I have been informed by many sales people and different rental stores that a law suite has been filed against Divx for only distibuting to Circuit City ONLY and not EVERYONE. This lawsuit must have been won, because several sales people have informed me that Hollywood Video will now carry Divx. The other news is that the price of Divx will drop to $3.50 in a month or so. The Divx people must be realizing they must drop prices below average DVD rental rates to even be considered. I myself, will rent DVDs when available. Second, will buy Divx. Thirdly, will rent VHS. The prices and availability will affect my renting decisions with features and performance alway #1! Widescreen Divx discs just came available and I bought the Armageddon disc. This was an exchange because the Divx disc SMALL SOLDIERS kept locking up on the video and the audio had drop outs. This has been the only Divx disc I had problems with and the operator gave me the option of an exchange or a $5.00 credit on my account for secondary viewing of other movies. I don't plan on watching a second time and will take back to Circuit City to place in their Divx recycling bin. I believe that the modem and account numbers that occupy these will be obsolete in a year or so when Divx realizes this is only a good format for "ONE" viewing. Other than that, DVD is the most logical choice!! I been informed by several different sales people at different visits that Divx will start to offer multi angle shots and other features to be competitive with DVD rentals. The performance of this player was much better than the competition with great detail and shadowing that displays BLACK and not a shade trying to be black as in some VHS tapes. The audio is remarkable with the Dolby Digital and even better with PCM. The player offers a simulated Dolby Digital surround sound from 2 speakers, but this was only effective when sitting in the sweet spot. The image changed off center as the listener moved from center. This player does not have the component outputs of the A310 or the fancy remote that only adds the the jog dial function with the joystick. The A310 also has gold plated connectors and Dolby Digital outputs. The Dolby Digital output takes away one set of PCM audio outputs to be replaced with one set of Downmixed Dolby Digital STEREO outputs. I think Dolby Digital downmix sounds very bad. All in all, the component outputs are a nice feature if you have a $2000 television. They don't guarantee future proofness as most HDTVs will have both composite and S-Video inputs along with a 480 interlaced component input. The fact is that the component output is nice but has nothing to do with obsoleteness. The Dolby Digital decoder is useless on the A310 because it is inferior to stand alone and receivers that run as cheap as only $350. The Divx feature makes this player future proof being Divx could become a viable rental format that would not be compatable with the earliest versions of DVD players. Even Best Buy sales people acknowledge they most likely will be selling these players next year but the price on these Divx players are expensive ( $100 - $150 more ) compared to DVD only players. In fact, Best Buy has the DVD-A310 on sale for only $450 which is cheaper than the DVD-X410 with a street price of $500. I believe this is the best choice for a future proof player for the people who love tech toys. I rate this the highest for performance and features!

I bought this model from Circuit City "open box" for $150. Ever since DIVX died (finally), DIVX enhanced machines have become quite inexpensive. Apparently, the "new" price was $250, still $50 cheaper than the 120-U, which lists for $300.
The picture and sound were absolutely fantastic. Of course, I have just stepped up from VHS, so that distinction is not very difficult to make. After reading the reviews for the 110 and the 120, I looked for pixelation and layering problems, and I found none. I looked specifically hard in the Blade DVD, but still found none.

For the price, I don't think I could have gotten anything better (or anthing at all), so I give this player 5 speakers. Grab the DIVX players while they still exist! (But stay away from the Proscan and the RCA)

This is my first DVD player, so I have really nothing to compare to. It is a month old without any problems. Both DVD picture plus sound and CD sound are very good. (I have a HK AVR 35 with Polk RT 800's).
