Strength:
Everything good. Dims the screen after a few minutes of still frame. Looks good. Great 5.1 sound.
Weakness:
Takes a while to respond to front panel commands such as eject. Sometimes the wrong action happens after a remote command. I don't need the Karaoke features. No DTS. The PHILIPS DVD955 was purchased because there was a threat that in Oct. 2001 the zoning would be enforced and zone free players would disappear. There was not a lot of choice back a year or so ago, but I do not regret paying the $1400 for a superb machine. I have not bought or rented a video that it wouldn't play. I have a PHILIPS Rear Projection 48" TV which gives a high resolution to the picture. I have no problems with sub titles, languages or any other features and enjoy hours a week using it. Similar Products Used: None. Have seen others and they are all inferior. |

Strength:
Upgradeable firmware & excellent conectivity options.
Weakness:
Everything else. The player provided approx 6-8 months of excellent service at which point it became very tempramental, playing certain discs one day then not the next! After sending the machine for servicing, I was told that cigarette smoke caused the problems (my cd & vcr are 10 years old with no such problems) so find this hard to believe. I have tried to flash the players firmware and thinking it may be a software problem but this has done nothing to help. Unfortunately this dvd player has put me off any future Philips products as its unrelibility has been an ongoing problem. I have frieds with other Philips players (different models) and they inform me of similar problems. All in all a rather sad machine. |

Strength:
All, image quality, sound, compatibility, conexions...
Weakness:
NONE This DVD-player is superb. The quality of the image is outstanding, the decompression of the image data is simply perfect. I have a lot of movies in DVD format and if you can see GLADIATOR on the DVD-955 from Philips you´ll understand what i'm saying (of course i supossed that you have a great TV). |
