Strength:

Great audio, logical controls. No Layer change freezes. Plays all my 50+ dvd's without a problem

Weakness:

The controls seem to have a delay of about 1 sec. I push a button on the remote, and nothing happens for 2 sec. I do, however, like the upgradeability feature. I just hope Philips utilized it

Got this at best buy for $200. For the price, it can't be beat.

Strength:

Its diffienent strengths are its audio which is superb.
I have a burner and its cd-r playback is flawless.

Weakness:

Remote (too small poorly laid out)
During layer changes it freezes

For a first dvd player it works just fine but I catch those little flaws. I am only 15 years old but trust me all my money has been going to audio equipment I have a SBLive soundcard in my pc and cambridge soundworks desktop theatre 5.1 surroun sound speakers and it kicks ass. Just got a pioneer 500 watt reciever and looking for some new speakers for it right now (doing tons of research.) Overall this dvd player is a good priced one for starters but deffienently not for someone who is very serious about video but sound is excellent (might use it for a cd player) *smile*

Strength:

Plays CD-R discs, VCDs

Weakness:

Lame Remote

I bought this machine to replace a much hated Panasonic DVD-C220. This machine makes up the misery that I suffered with the Panasonic. But, I sill wish I had bought this one first!

This player has everthing that you'd need in a player. Plus it plays CD-R Discs and VCDs. And it looks great!

So far everything is good. Though I have found some VCDs that don't play well on this machine.

The remote is a little crappy. I think they could have come up with something much better than the tiny one that comes with the player.

Also, I had to look up how to control the machine with the remote! Stuff like captioning: this is turned on by pressing the CC button, but is turned off by holding the butting for a couple of seconds. Little things like that make it a little annoying. But, it's something i can live with.

For me the noise isn't a problem. I don't think it's really that loud. It is a little noisy when you change tracks and when you insert the Disc, but who cares? You can't hear any music at that time anyway. I've got nothing to complain about while a DVD is playing.

As for any noise while a CD is playing, this is also something that I don't really care about. I have a CD changer to play my CDs. I'll leave the CD playing to the CD player and the DVD playing to the DVD player.

Over all I think this guy is an excellent buy!

Strength:

Plays everything (VCD, DVD, CD, CD-R, etc)Great picture with S-Video connection.

Weakness:

Small remote makes me feel like I have the dexterity of a Special Olympics bronze medal winner.

I've had this player for over a year now and have experienced no signifigant problems playing any DVDs or VCDs. Discs only skip on some rentals I forget to wipe clean before putting in the machine. The picture looks great with the S-video hookup. I haven't noticed a difference between that and my Playstation2 which is hooked up to the same TV with the component video connection. The picture on the Philips looks just as crisp and clean. Although I havent played as many movies with the ps2 mainly because the controller is a worse remote than the small remote with close quatered small buttons for the 825. Often you will be fumbling in the dark trying to hit the correct button and end up mashing 3 of them at once. Other than that its been a great player for the price.

Strength:

Very good value, and very good performance.

Weakness:

Construction is a little on the cheap plastic side.

Bought this for Father-in-law. Doesn't have home theater setup, just wants to watch movies. Played all the movies very well. Nice digital picture, sound was also fine.

The player had no problems, and 'The Matrix' was flawless. So those who have had problems, I would suggest taking the machine back and getting a replacement.

Strength:

Solid machine, never skips. Plays dual layers, cd-rs, some vcds.

Weakness:

Remote too small.
It won't play some vcds.

I bought this unit in MARCH 2000 to replace my Samsung 709 DVD that had problems right out of the box. I am very pleased with the 825 for these reasons: It plays all dual layers without any problem. I've never had a DVD skip no matter how scratched up or dirty. It plays my all CDRs.
The noise when loading is not a problem. It's a very solid machine--you can't go wrong. Those of you looking to buy an inexpensive dvd player that is reliable and you don't want to worry about skipping or dual layer problems, this is the one. I bought this at Best Buy for 180.00.

The Bad:
I ordered a VCD from Malaysia (STAR WARS episode 1 VCD) and it wouldn't play it at all---which is why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. Kind of disappointing. The remote is small and has a minimal amount of buttons, not that flashy. I have found that some dvds won't play if you just push the "play" button on your dvd player. It only responds to the "play" button on the remote. So if you lose this small remote, then you'll have to get a replacement to watch certain movies.

Overall, though, it is more reliable than the Samsung 709 player. I'm always worried if a dvd disc is going to skip or lipsync on my Samsung but never has it happened on the Phiilips.

Good Buy.

Strength:

ease of setup. works as advertised.

Weakness:

none discovered yet.

I was especially attracted by the price. A local Kroger store has many units on sale for $159.00. Reviews I came across in the web had encouraging remarks. Several reviews had negative comments about disc skipping - but on a review of these comments it appeared the users were playing all rented discs and were probably dirty to begin with. My experience is excellent. DVD movies and audio CD's play as advertised without skipping or pause. If you are looking for an entry level DVD player and can still find one of these, get it now.

Strength:

I think it looks really great. The picture and sound are nice.

Weakness:

The remote is a bit cheap, but a universal remote solves this problem quickly.

It seems from reading these reviews that you either get a good machine or a bad one. Mine is wonderful, I use it almost everyday, and have for the last five months, and it has never experienced a problem. The picture is great and so is the audio.
This is a low cost machine, but I don't think that makes much difference. I bought this machine after my friend recommended it to me, and I haven't been sorry yet.
It's never freezed - I'm sorry if yours has.
I think it's great and you should buy it.
Bye.

Strength:

Low cost, excellent audio

Weakness:

Noisy when player is reading a dvd

Have played nearly 60 dvds flawlessly, except the last 2 minutes of the "Blair Witch Project". Had to turn power off and restart the machine. Video was superb using the s-video connection. Have to say that cd's sound better than my yamaha cd player. Considering the price I paid of $225.00 it is an excellent component that should serve me a couple of years.
The rest of my system consists of
Yamaha 795a
Yamaha 5 disc changer
Paradigm cc350 center channel
Paradigm Mini Monitor in the front
Paradigm Atoms in the rear
Mirage BPS-100 subwoofer
Sony SLV-620 HF vcr
Mitsubishi 32" television

price ($229.00-best buy)

Weakness:

layer change/some movies it will freeze for
1-2 sec.

If you don't mind a freeze up from time to time this player is good. You can't beat the price, but for an extra $50 you can get a much better dvd player.
I called Phillps/Magnavox when I noticed the layer freeze up.They told me I just had a bad player,so I took it back an got a new one.The new one did the same thing Same place MATRIX (20-21). Matrix wasn't the
only movie I noticed it in.

BIG BOB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
