Nice picture, great set of features, for a nice price, componet out, DTS, Dolby Digital, CD-R and CDRW readable.

Minor problem with layer change freeze, as mentioned on other reviews here.

When I went to The Good Guys to buy a DVD player, I initally did not plan to spend much more that $200, and was going to buy the DVD-711(or smtn model number like that) which is nearly identical to the 940, but does not read CDR/RWs or have componet out. But due to stock room computer mess up, they did not have any on stock, and sold me teh 940 for $30 cheeper, (listed at the time at $299).

Initally I had no problems what so ever with it, except for a freeze here and there on burnt VCDs. But ive had more layer change skips recentally.

Everyone on this page is ticked about the firmware problem, but ive got a new scoop for you. I have been in contact with Philips, and while talking to the tech support man, I mentioned that I noticed that the 940 was no longer in stores, he said yes that they dont sell many units anymore due to the problematic firmware, and the unit was initally built for Firmware upgrades by the user, but they had been having tons of problems with it initally.

But on a good note, he said the hold on the Firmware discs was just recentally lifted, becasue they worked the kinks out, and that it was on its way to my house, free of charge ($12.50 a disc for normal upgrades). Its been a little over a week now, and ive not seen the disc in the mail yet, but I have faith in them. If i dont see a disc in the next few days ill give them a call, and keep you posted here if and when I do get the disc.

This message for philips dvd 950. The thema is closed. Because excellence in picture vcd and especially DVD and sound in cd,cdr and others. Accordanding to me, really thema finished. superb . I can say, if you buy this dvdplayer, you forget problem in dvd-player.(ps.I dont know snyu think 940 and back-etch.this product is especisl for me.
