Strength:

sharp & crisp picture,sexy & sleek look,advanced circuitry & all possible connections,price, etc,etc,etc.

Weakness:

Made in China!!!!

I use DVD players for movies and am a videophile. Thus I cannot compromise on picture quality.Quality of material used, weight of machine, chassis feel and the overall performance of what the DVD player outputs on a TV signal, are equally important to me......Till I saw this machine and lost faith in my belief system. My machine is made in China and says it's designed in Holland. My scepticsm around this issue vanished when I saw the picture the Q 50 produces.Amazing!!The colors are vivid, lines straight,no chroma bug,no bleeding and an extreeeemmmmly sharp picture.Just try it on an interlace mode before trying progressive scan and you'll get a feel of what this machine is offering at a baseline.I don't care about the ergonomics of the remote control and issues like the display panel (which is actually quite creative and scintilating). This is because we all have central Intelli remotes for our equipments ( hopefully),esp.if we are using progressive scan machines.Just look at what you are getting for the price; a DCDI chip, digital outs, digital circuitry and all the essential component connections.I think adding a decoder is a waste, yet this machine still retains it's sleek looks despite the 2 in 1 function. Please refer to www.hometheatrehifi.com for a detailed review on benchmark tests of this machine. This is the most authoritative and intelligent site on Progressive Scan DVD players with lab results; period!.They list all available players and have a comprehensive comparison available.Anyone who wants to be critical about this machine's functioning, please refer to this site.Just because something is available a little cheaper,we should refrain from criticising it.This is a mind set problem and is apparent in a couple of reviews below. We ,as consumers, should be happy that we are the winners as Digital equipment is available for less price.Let's enjoy what we have and be objective about what the end result is.In Q50's case,it is one awesome picture.

Strength:

It makes rich Hong Kong high-ender very mad.

Weakness:

Not made in Hong Kong. Is that a sin to be made in Singapore?

Mr. Sunny compared it with $5K top line Pioneer and trash this $0.5K DVD player like a red eye bull. Comma... I would put it a 5+ star for value rating just because somebody do that. For $4.5K difference, I would buy a flat HDTV and the improvement over old TV would be much more significant. If you are a audio fan, half of that can give you high end SACD (I won't mention the name, so he could not jump on it). Let's give a review for a 500 bucks player straight.

Good: Video is good for med price machine.
Slim body is good for small space.
Audio is good enough for a DVD player, I won't use
a SACD/DVD-A player to trash this one.
Enough outputs for family use.
It's DTS/Dolby decoder seems better than my receiver,
which is a older Denon, perfer to run 6ch in.
It plays enough formats for audio.
Looks better than a $?K machine.

Bad: Remote is tuff for lazy boy but OK for high-tech nurd.
Power cable is too thin.
Digital output is not 100% matched to my DAC.
Between CD tracks, my DAC will lost that 24/96 signal
in his display for 0.1 sec but it does not affect CD
playing. (Somehow, my CD player don't do that, don't
know why?) BTW I use it for CDR and MP3 sometimes,
because my CD player can't do that.

Feeling is mixed. I would give it a five star for value and 4 star for performance. But I put them all five to compensate previous review. What's wrong with Singapore?
Mr. Sunny hate it so much!

Strength:

Excellent Audio, Progressive Scan, and Interlaced mode. Supposedly plays DVD-R, DVD+RW too (NZ model specs)

Weakness:

No backlight on remote buttons, small buttons.

I don't know where the guy above got his player from, since mine has no problems at all. Ringing Philips NZ, they say the initial player shipments to US had a few problems, i.e. Chroma Bug, and NTSC picture alignment..
all issues with shipments after Sep have been fixed, and none of the problem players entered NZ.
This player has flawless Progressive scan output, it's interlaced mode is excellent as well. I've used various other players, and no other come close to this except for reference models. Mine is multiregion and also plays RCE discs too, I can't say the same for all Sony’s.
CD Audio output is simply superb, unbelievable especially for a DVD Player. The specs on the NZ model even lists
DVD-R and DVD+RW playability. I have yet to verify this.
Out of the five players I've had, this is defiantly one that I'll be keeping.

video quality. Dcdi chip

This is an awesome player. Video quality blows away machines that cost much more. The guy that give it a low rating is too critical of a machine that only costs $500.

Strength:

very good picture quality in s-video
attractive design
new thicker power cord

Weakness:

progressive scan output did not work with my TV
video hangs occasionally
chassis a bit thin and weak
mediocre performance from interlaced component output
audio can be light at times, especially voices
chroma bug found in interlaced mode
does not include component cable like some other models

unfortunately, the progressive scan feature did not work on my Sony KV-27FS12. I will probably exchange it for a Pany 91. for those who are interested in the Q50, make sure the store has a good return policy -- you might not get a perfect one the first time around.

Strength:

Awesome Picture & Sound, Sleek look

Weakness:

on screen menu - will take a little getting use to

Overall I like the performance from this dvd player so far... This is not the first dvd player I have had, I feel it's up there with other high-end dvd players.

I haven't seen the freezing that others have spoke about (unless they are talking about when a dual layered dvd switches layers - almost every dvd player hangs for a second for that) I hope thats all it is

well I have 30 days to see - if I don't like it you know it's going back......ô¿ô

Strength:

Picture and sound

Weakness:

No text on song played in CD and MP3 and weak fast forward.

The picture in non progressive scan is much better than other similar price products, and the sound (for CD) is as good as any other using digital output.

The only drawback is there is no text on the song being played on CD playback.

DVD is superb picture and sound.
MP3 sound is good.
VCD is a bit weak on picture and forward.

I would give it a 4.5, but to balance the 1 star i give 5.

Strength:

Extremely good video quality
Warm and mellow sound

Weakness:

Getting used to its looks

The Q50 is a fantastic product for a videophile.
The CD playback is quite good, warm and mellow, and gives the impression of a 2X more expensive player. Pity it doies not do SACD.
The DVD palyback is incredible. I was ready to buy a Sony DVPS9000 until I managed to burrow a Q50 and a DVPS9000 to do a direct comparison. The Q50 kicked the DVPS9000 out of existence in the video stakes. Pity it does not play SACD. My friends who owns the Sony regretted buying in haste. The own who owns the Q50 could sotp smiling. So did I when I bought the Q50. Wish it comes in black and with the HDCD/SACD features, even it is twice the current price. I didn;t like the looks of the DVD1000. Wished Philips spruce up the styling to look like the Sony.

I did not have any quality problems with the Q50. Maybe its not the first sets on sale. My friend did exchanged his 1 month old set for a new one. No problems reported so far in the last 3 months.
