Strength:

Only one ----- when you use the progressive component output with a progressive compatible TV when playing weird materials e.g. the extra materials of Hollywood movies.

Weakness:

1. Mediocre video outputs from composite, s-video and interlaced component outputs. Also mediocre audio outputs.
2. Slow response in remote.
3. No display of vital info e.g. track, time, etc. on the
panel.
4. Thin and weak chassis.
5. Poor QC ---- made in Singapore. You probably needs to replace several times to get one that work properly.
6.

It's cheap but it also performs like a budget gear. Some people buy it only because of the Sage chip. Too simple and naive.

Everything counts in a good DVD player ----- strong and heavy chassis, hi-quality transformer and regulated power supply, outstanding transport mechanism, top class D/A chips and circuitry, ..... How can one just rely on a Sage chip?

Hope people wouldn't exaggerate and advertise as if it is a high class product.

Strength:

Looks, DCDi progresive scan, DD/DTS build in

Weakness:

Interface, remote

I just got the new Philips DVD-Q50 so I wanna share with all of you what I found in that machine. First, this unit is NOT for everyone. It is strictly for people with the sense of art in their souls. This is Philips' very artsy "match line" series (where 90% of this series stuff is sold in Europe, not in the US. Why??!!!!).
Anyway. Bad stuff first: the remote sucks, controlling the unit (play, stop, ff, rev, skip, etc) totally sucks. The manual sucks. The display is looking gorgeous but is quite useless (although it looks awesome, and it should stay there!). Other words, don't trash your old CD player (I have mine in the bedroom where I keep my old Yamaha receiver). Put this Philips in the living room where you have guests coming, press play, and forget it. Let the looks and the sound (or picture for DVD) do the rest. Don't try to search for a specific part of a song. It is a pain!
The good stuff. This is THE MOST BEAUTIFUL unit I ever saw, and I bought it after contemplating about a year on other units, waiting for DVD-Audio to come out, blah blah blah, and after seeing this model, it took me 2 minutes to sacrifice all my researches and DVD-Audio to get this one. I got home, and immediately ordered a Marantz SR5200 just for that.
It has 96kHz (!!!) compatible digital outs (192kHz on analog outs, which is non-existent in the real world and will never be) so you don't need the analog outs at all. It has 12bit/54MHz video DACs, has Faroudia's DCDi for progressive scan. Can you get better than that? Nope. It also has built in Dolby Digital and DTS decoders (which I don't need anymore since I got the Marantz). The picture is better than Sony's reference DVD player!!! Sound? I don't use analog outs so I can't comment on that (although there are some brilliant folks that can tell the difference between two digital outputs. I guess one stream of 01010011 CAN sound better than the other 01010011)
Anyway. Despite unit's useless interface, the looks (YES!!) and the picture quality (YES!!!) beats the rest totally (at least for me: the quality of the output on digital TV and the looks matter the most for me). So, think about it, and buy it (or not if you don't care for the true art).

Strength:

Philips Technology

Weakness:

I'm sure there are a few - but for < $500.00?

The reason Mr. Sunny Wong Lee or whatever the F*ck his name is is pissed about the Q50 is that he spent $4.5K more for
a marginally better unit than what he could have spent.
You watch, Philips is gonna start coming out with all
new products that kick ass on the Japanese competition
at a lot less money. Let's face it, Philips was a co-founder of CD/Laser reading technology so they've
had the time to master the technology. As far as DVDs go,
they are catching up quick!! From what I've heard and
read(HomeTheater Review)the Q50's picture clarity is
crisp and clear than even the Denon 2800, which by the
way is an excellent machine, so that's what you should
be interested in........the picture!!....why anything else?
Forget about the display!! And for you people always
whining about the remotes these things have.......here's
an idea.......put a DVD in the machine......press play......
sit back in your chair.........AND SHUT THE F*ck UP!!!

Strength:

State-Of-The-Art Picture Quality, price to performance ratio, styling.

Weakness:

Extra testing would have fixed minor bugs, minor freezes,

I have always been a fan of Toshiba DVD players because of its superior clarity, none have compared for the price, and I mean none. I took a look and wanted to see what the riot was all about when a friend told me Faroudja line doubler was in a Philips made dvd player. Comparing my current unit the 5700 to the Philips Q50 is NO CONTEST, the Q50 easily outperformed the 5700 showing more clarity, more dimensionality, more true to life colors, and ABSOLUTELY no flicker whatsoever. I know there are faulty crap units, ONLY buy if you have a warranty, if you can secure a good performing model I suggest you do, you will NOT be dissapointed. I can't wait for CES 2002, when ALL the new dvd players featuring FAROUDJA doublers FLOOD the market. WHOOHOOO.
