Strength:

picture quality

I was deciding between the DV-05 and the Sony ES7700. It is my subjective opinion that the DV-05 has a better video quality than the Sony. I could not objectively evaluate the audio quality because the two units were not in the same store. The final deciding factor for me was the price because I was able to purchase it on sale for $699. I've owned this unit for about three months. I'm evaluating this product based on usage with an older 25" Sony XBR TV, Denon AVR3300 receiver, Monitor Audio Speakers and Nordost cables. I'm very pleased with the audio and video quality. I have connected the DV-05 to the Denon via the digital connections so that the digital to audio conversion occurs in the Denon.
I'm using a few audiophile devices (which I have made) to maximize the performance of the Pioneer DV-05. I have not experienced any problems with the audio or video performance of the Pioneer. Besides playing DVD's, I've also played CD's, Audio DVD's and CD-R's on this unit. I think you could think of this unit as the "son of the DV-09". For what it's worth, this thing is the best. Strength:

Picture Quality and Sound

Weakness:

Noisy Transport

Incredible product both in picture and sound quality. The audio section is so good I sold my separate transport and DAC. Pioneer should have quieted the transport. In silent parts of movies you can hear it. Not what I would expect from a 1k DVD player. Overall it is great. My actual rating is 4.5 but since you cant do that I gave it a 4 solely on the transport.

I've received about 30 e-mails asking where I got it from for $299. So for everyone's info in the future;

I got it from a local store in NC http://www.nowaudiovideo.com . They were running a special offer on the DV-05 a couple of months ago and I don't know if they still have it available at that price, or even if they have any left. The cheapest I've seen it at since then, is at http://www.letsgodigital.com for around $450.

After three months this player is getting better and better...if you have the chance, buy it.

Just received my DV-05 from Uncle's Stereo and guess what? No video. Audio sounds great. It was manufactured in July 99. Can't believe Pioneer would continue to distribute this product to the dealers without recalling. When I called Uncle's Stereo they knew about this problem. They recommended that I try another brand.

Another kick ass product from Pioneer!! I also got the Elite Vsx-26tx today..they are perfect for each other! The people that got bad units through the mail have learned a lesson I hope. First, i know that you save $$ getting it mail order or what have you BUT, if you would have went to a local Hi-Fi shop, the returning or exchanging wouldnt be such a headache noiw would it!?!?! Anyways, its a magnificent DVD player, my friends thought they had nice players with their Sonys, Its safe to say that I have the last laugh!! Video performance is superb!! The audio is double superb! Get it now!!...Run..fly..PIONEER!!!..get it NOW!!!!!

After reading these reviews and noticing that many people who have had the unit shipped were having problems I found a local dealer who had them in stock. After mentioning that I had read that DOA was a problem with this unit he assured me that they had been selling the DV-05 for several months and had not had any returned as DOA. Have had the unit about a week now and all I can say is WOW! The video and sound (even with older supporting units) are outstanding. Now I can't wait to upgrade everything else.

I have only owned this unit for two weeks but am very disappointed that it occasionally exhibits the lip sync problem I had heard about with certain SONY models (DVP-S530D for one). So far I have only played three DVDs, but have had lip sync problems with two of them. It only happens once in awhile, but it really takes you out of the movie experience. Too bad, because otherwise it seems like a good quality unit.

Let me put it this way. I planned to replace both my 7 year-old 27" TV (ISF Calibrated, though) and my Sony S-500D DVD player. After purchasing this DVD player for merely $920 (Canadian dollars, including our 15% taxes; equivalent to US$ 533), I totally do not feel the need of changing my TV at all. The picture is great with great anamorphic down-conversion. It's worth every single penny and it feels like I'm buying a new DVD player and a 27" ISF Calibrated TV for only US$ 533.
Great Value!

Strength:

picture and sound.

Weakness:

see below

My model is DV-S5, similar to DV05 in US. The picture as well as sound is good. However, after using it for one year, there is some problem in reading CD. There is no problem is reading DVD. However, sometime it can't read CD "directly". The problem can be fixed by playing DVD for a while and play the CD.

I would sent it to shop for repair later.

Has anyone get the same problem with Pionner.

Otherwise it's a good player.
