My first experience with DVD was a Denon 2000. I recently upgraded my amp to the Denon AVR 5700. At the same time I bought the DV-09, mostly due to DTS, HDCD and the Coaxial Digital Out. This piece is more musical than my previous unit. I very much enjoy the detailed, life-like sound. The 5700 brought this out in my older DVD player, but it is even more apparent now with the DV-09. All in all, a great piece for both movies and music. If you need an all in one solution, I would highly recommend this unit. I for one am not a fan of what some call "a warmer, less bright" sound. I prefer the "accurate, more life-like" sound, without the use of bass and treble controls or DSP effects, especially for music. If anyone has any notable DVDs to recommend, please feel free to email me. I have not purchased any DTS encoded discs yet. Musically i would definitely recommend "Jazz at the Pawnshop" series of CDs. Supposedly they were recorded live with only two mics. Thanks again!

This player is just great, i own the Sony 7700 and a Pioneer 717 (aus model) and i have to say i do not want to compare the three, insted i want to say this DVD player is all it can be. Great Video output. Great Sound and is THX.i got this player from Canada for $2300 can$ to my door in Australia.
i am going to sell one machine because i got the 717 because it is ZONE FREE !
so i'm going to sell either the Sony 7700 or the Pioneer DV-09.
i bought the DV-09 first then the Sony 7700. but i'm going to keep the the DV-09 as i just love it, i had the Sony 7000 it was my first player, and i loved it.
i guess it comes to taste, and i LOVE SONY products, but Pioneer is going to win the DVD battle this time. If anyone wants to know ALL about the DV-09 e-mail me and i'll reply with a complete Review for you, as this site seems to be like a contest to sell a item. but it's up to YOU !
Both the SOny and Pioneer get 5 STARS in my book i just like the ELITE THX DV-09

thanks for your time.

The DV-09 is stunning.I agree the remote is not to well thought out.The main navigation buttons are hard to use in the dark.BUT audio and video performance is the best I have seen. Its the first DVD player I have had that can produce a true "film" like picture.General operation is on the slow side but it makes no mistakes unlike some "fast" players.I have junked my CD player(a mid/high end Denon)as the DV-09 blows it away in every detail.I've had the DV-09 about 6 weeks and I can honestly say I would not hesitate to buy it again.Thats not something I would say about just any bit of equipement. You can see and hear what you've paid for.I like that.By the way I rate build quality as so over the top it's a bit of a turn on!(no not like that)

Strength:

Overall quality, including both pictiure and sound

Weakness:

if any, price.

Included in a home theatre set-up including runco 933 projector and B&W 802 front, 804 surround and B&W center speakers. Could not be more pleased with quality and performance of entire system including both DVD's and CD's.
If price is not a concern, and you enjoy movies this product should be on your shopping list.

Strength:

Extremely quiet transport, glitch free, plays CD-R's, CD-RW's (Yes, it does!)

Weakness:

Buttons on remote are small (but hey, I don't mind it that much), Setup menu could be friendly. It would also be nice to resume play after stop instead of having to go to the menu.

When it comes to non-progressive DVD players, I believe this one is the best of the best. I have compared it with the Sony DVP-7000/7700, and other players, and it will be the last DVD player I purchase until I get progressive scan TV one day.

One thing I find very useful that other DVD players don't have is a video feature called Y/C Timing. For some reason using component with my 32FS12 Wega, I get color bleeding on edges, like peoples faces. There was nothing in the TV service menu that could fix this. This feature completely eliminated the problem.

Contrary to what many people say, including the manual, the DV-09 handles CD-R and CD-RW with the greatest of ease. I'm wondering how many people have bothered not to try it due to what the manual says. It is possible that Pioneer modified the player along the way. My unit was manufactued in 2000.

I could say other good things about this player but they've already been said below.
