Strength:

-Very easy to set-up
-Simple, straight-forward remote
-Easy to read display
-PLAYS ANYTHING YOU THROW AT IT!

Weakness:

None that I can see

I purchased this player recently and I absolutely love it. I have all Pioneer components and while that had no bearing on my decision for a DVD player I am glad I chose Pioneer. I looked at Sony and Toshiba and JVC and for the price the Pioneer had the best set of features for the value. It was easy to set up, and it has both the optical and coax digital outputs. It also utilizes composite video connections which is great. Fast loading and quiet transport (but who hears the transport over the blaring speakers??). It is a nice compliment to my home theatre system!

Strength:

Component Output, Optical and Coax digital out, nice and easy to use remote and player.

Weakness:

None.

Well, I got this player on sale at Brandsmart USA here in Miami for 148.99. I think I got a heck of a deal. This player is easily worth about 250-300. This is one great player. I mean, for the price you can't beat it. I had a first generation pioneer player (DV-505) and it worked perfect and still does. This player does have some features that I do like. I like the component output, I mean, it is a big difference from s-video. Colors are bright and vivid and blacks are black. It has played every disc I have thrown at it without a flaw. The sound is great, but that is probably due to my receiver. The remote is lightweight and easy to use. I know some people have complained about the remote but it does what it is supposed to do. All in all, this is a great player. If you are looking for a new DVD player, this is the one for you. Also, this player will let you squeeze the animorphic widescreen a bit, so you don't get those big black lines. I don't mind the lines, but other poeple in the house do. Well, hope this review helps anyone who is looking at buying this awesome DVD player.

Strength:

Excellent picture and sound quality, Reading of CD-Rs (Haven't tried Cd-RW's yet)

Weakness:

Tray noise, remote control.

Tray noise - YES, it is quite noisy, but not on all DVDs. That's the problem. And the noise decreases as the movie goes on (It is noisy in the menues, while loading DVDs and during first couple of scenes...) After 5-6 chapters - depending on the dvd, the noise gradually goes down, until it is completely silent (half way through the film) and it stays completely quiet untill the end of the film).
However, as I said, it doesn't do it with all DVDs. I've tested the following:
MATRIX - plays perfectly fine, without any noise (Rented DVD)
Hitchcock's Psycho - Quite noisy during first 5 scenes. After scene 6 it spins fine, without any noise at all (Completely new DVD);
Carrie - Plays perfectly with NO noise (New DVD)
From Russia With Love (Pretty noisy - the noise goes down after the scene #15); (New DVD)
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly - Plays GREAT - No noise at all! (NEW DVD)
The Sound of Music - Noisy (but not as much as the other few) during the first 5-6 scenes.

To me this noise is very disturbing because you can definately hear the noise during the scenes without too much music of special effects. For example - in any dialogue scene. If you have a wall unit with the glass door, then this should solve the problem, because otherwise the player is pretty good.

Except for the remote control. It has very small buttons, and you really have to press them hard to function. Scanning is not very smooth - especially because of the small FFWD AND REW buttons on the remote...

Anyway, I bought the player yesterday, and I think I'm going to have it exchanged for another one. I'll first try the same model (333) to see whether the "tray-noise" problem was my particular player (which I doubt). If not, I'm exchanging it for the PANASONIC.

Strength:

Plays cd-r and cd-rw, clear picture, and great quality.

Weakness:

remote, ff and rr takes too long.

Bought it recently and felt that it was a good dvd for the priced i paid. the only problem with playing the cd-r is that you must copy the cd from (cd to cd) in order for it to work on the player. It wont work if you copy the data your computer then burn it out onto a disk.

Strength:

Very versatile; video & sound quality are excellent (as I'm sure they are for most if not all DVD players). 1-year warranty.

Weakness:

None that I would say are inherent in all models.

I'm guessing that the overall score given to this machine is a little lower than it should be, given that there are pretty much fives all the way down, a few fours, a three, and then three ones (two by the same person) by people who were unfortunate enough to get lemons.

However, having seen a recent one of those (Oct. 26, I think), I'm a little concerned about my own player, which locked up in the middle of "Heat" a day or two after I bought it. I backed it up a couple frames, after which it played the same scene without a hitch. It has not happened again in the month or so since then, and it had better not in the future, as my one-month return policy is now over. However, Pioneer does offer a 1-year warranty; all I would have to pay is shipping. I've been told that few companies offer as long a warranty on DVD players.

Other than that one lock-up, I have been very pleased with the player's performance. If you read reviews on the RV30, people there will say it is better, and reading here you see people think this is better. I saw its performance at a friend's house, and it was great. Better? I can't say. DVD in general just looks and sounds amazing. In my opinion, you can't go wrong with lower-cost models from companies like Pioneer, Panasonic, and JVC. You could almost choose one based entirely on the remote. I opted for this model because it plays everything, its inexpensive, and has a good warranty.

4 stars overall because of the one lock-up, 5 stars on value because I believe it was a fluke, and the enjoyment for the price is fantastic. Too bad my tv and stereo system don't take full advantage of the technology.

Strength:

Picture quality, sound, versatility, ease of operation, layout, nice feature set, price...

Weakness:

None really...

Well, this is the second Pioneer DVD player for me. I had a DV-434 but took it back because I couldn't see the need for the progressive scan feature when it requires a limited range of TV devices to use it. However, the DV-333 is the same player (but $100+ cheaper) and picture is the same from what I've witnessed.

I have had both the Sony S7000 and the S7700 and to their benefit the build quality was great on both. If a "more" solid sounding "quieter" tray is what you're after, then be all means get the much more pricy Sonys. However, it is eyes opinion that Sony spends too much money on reducing every video artifact known to man which results in expensive top of the line DVD players that just look soft!

The DV-333 (and DV-434 for that matter) both look much sharper (really film like - as in crisp!)

While the Sonys had a "sweeter" sound compared to the Pioneers; the Sonys were both plagued by a closed in feeling (i.e. no openness). The Pioneers, on the other hand, offered a much more theater-like openness (i.e. you could really hear what the actors were saying).

Also, you get true 96/24 playback for audio (where permitted); not so with the Sonys.

Finally, I just love SVCD-Rs right now and the Pioneer plays them with all intended effects (multi-slo mo, etc.). It also plays VCD-Rs, CD-Rs, and anything you can put on a CD-RW. This unit is very versatile and it has been the best all around player I've had yet! I just wish I hadn't spent all the money on the other Sony players. Let's hope this 9000ES DVD player offers more "real" versatility and not just a way to part of from more money in the promise of SACD.

BTW, my system is ALL Sony or SonyES with 5-JBL S310 speakers for surround. Bye bye!

Strength:

Good Sound and Picture. Load fast.

Weakness:

CD's only sound OK.

I purchased this as an open box item from Best Buy. It came with an rca cable for sound and video and a remote. I don't know if it was supposed to come with an S-Video cable or DVD's, but mine didn't. For $179 I can buy my own S-Video and DVD's.

This is my third DVD player and the picture quality and sound quality are perfect like every other DVD player I have owned. I haven't had a chance to test DTS.

The only real difference between this player and my other players is the disks load faster. My JVC unit has a few minor bugs. I was planning on replacing my Onkyo CD player with this unit since my CD player doesn't have a remote, but I didn't because my Onkyo CD sounds noticeably better.

Overall, I don't think I could find a better unit for $179, so it gets 5 stars for value. I'm only giving it 4 stars overall because there's definate room for improvement when playing CD's.

Strength:

CD-R compatible, 96KHz Digital out

Weakness:

Fuzzy Picture and not as good sound compared to my old
Panasonic A110.

I bought this product to replace my few year old Panasonic
A110 DVD player. I boutht the Pioneer for the CD-R
and 96KHz compatiblity, however, I was disappointed with
the Pioneer's picture quality (rather soft) and the
sound through the digital interface (also relatively
muddy) Again, these are all "relative" compared to the
Panasonics, overall functionality is pretty good.
Every movie I threw at it worked so far, even some
VCDs from Asia. (I have VCDs that are known to
not work on Philips, and some others.)
I've decided to trade it back in for a Panasonic RV65,
as it does offer a sharper picture, but lacks all
the CD-R and 96Khz compatibility.
I guess basic picture and sound quality is more important,
and I can't find any other nice player with
good VCD compatibility AND nice new features for

Weakness:

None so far.

After extensive research, I think this is the best player at $200.

My system is as follows :

Pioneer DV 333 DVD player.
Yamaha 5150 receiver.
Energy Take 5 + SL8 sub.

I think this is the best system for a medium sized apartment room at @ $1200.

Strength:

Clear Picture, great sound, pretty good remote(also considered less than desirable by some others though).

Weakness:

Minor "Ghost" effects when white text is displayed against black background. But is probably not related to DVD player..see below.

The player seems to be everything that a beginning home theater enthusiast, such as myself, wants. The picture is sharp, color is bright, and the audio sounds fantastic...even through the regular TV speakers and even through a 100x2 stereo reciever(will most definately be upgraded soon). I had an absolute blast watching Ronin, The Rock, Bowfinger, The World is Not Enough, and Sarah McGlachlan Video Collection. The remote is also pretty good in my opinion, I guess others do not like it too much becasue of the small buttons...but I adjusted to them very quickly and they are quite comfortable.

The only problem I really had was "ghost" effects would appear when white text would be against a toally black background. It would look almost as a faint smeer of white paint going across the letter all the way to the right. The problem to me is very minor though, it does not bother the quality of the viewing experience and is probably due to my related equipment(NOT the player), which of course will be changed out for better stuff once my money is saved up.

But all in all, for a beginner such as my self, or for anyone wanting a good value and a good player, Pioneer seems to be the ticket! Happy Watching and Listening folks!
