I've waited until the very last second to jump on the DVD / HD TV band wagon and I believe the new Pioneer PRO520 High Definition Screen and DV37 Progressive Scan DVD player was the way to go.

In short, both are simply an outstanding combination and truly worthy of the lofty praise that Pioneer's Elite line of products are garnering. I've spent a large chunk on my new home theatre and frankly as much as a lot of the competitive products are getting better, the Elite line is simply the best (bar none!). It's a pricey combination but well worth the expense.

In summary, if you can afford it, buy both components with the highest assurance that you'll be thrilled!

DD and DTS out. 96kHz audio

    Weakness:

Remote buttons are glow in the dark and not backlit.

This is my first DVD player. After doing some in home trials I found this to be the one for me. It's Picture is rich and deep. Colors are vibrant and not harsh like I found on the JVC. It's design is
nice, but to be honest, I don't care how a component looks sitting in the rack as long as it performes to my satisfaction, and the DV-37 does so in spades!!
Edge detail is sharp. Highly active scene transistions are handled perfectly with no compromise to details. What can I say, it is a great performer!!!

The sound from this baby is nothing to sneeze at. I'm finding details in some of my CDs I never knew. Rich harmonics, deep drones. The highs are smooth, maybe slightly restrained. Midrange is perfect, voices are "real". No honking with female vocals. Acoustic guitars resonate wonderfully!! Lows are reproduced faithfully. The DV-37 beat out the Sony and JVC for the more natural sound it produced in my system.

The remote is fine. It would be nice if it was lighted, but I'm not one to fidget with the remote anyway. And since this unit has had no querks, there's no need to be pushing buttons except for play and stop.

Overall, I would recomend the DV-37 to anyone who is looking at other units in the same price range and even units costing twice as much. It's flawless performance is well worth the $$$!

    Strength:

Excellent build quality; very high quality video, even in interlaced mode; wide range of vido adjustments to maximize picture quality; outstanding audio quality on CD and DVD; minimum of useless bells and whistles.

    Weakness:

Remote control not great: small buttons, hard to read labels.

If you are looking for a very high quality, reasonably-priced unit that provides superb video and audio playback, you won't do any better than the DV-37. My home theater system is built around high-end audio system, and this DVD player is good enough to replace my CD player (a Rega Planet). My HT monitor is a 32" Sony Wega TV, which does not accept a progressive-scan input, but the picture quality is still outstanding. Audio output in either hihg-definition 96 kHz or 48 kHz (PCM). I purchased the unit from Avantgarde Trading Company for $650 plus $20 shipping. Very prompt, professional service. E-mail for dealer: avantgarde2@hotmail.com

    Strength:

FAST loading. Copper chassis. Segmented internals. Composite video. Progressive scan. Dimming feature for front panel.

Yeah OK - maybe this unit doesn't have all the bells, lights and whistles of the Toshibas but it is a top performer. Imaging is superb - solid blacks - true imaging from corner to corner which I found lacking in the Toshibas.

I see other comments posted about the remote that are not quite positve. I found the remote quite useful but did away with all of our remotes via the Philips Pronot - one of those devices which, much like the DV-37 - you'll wonder how you ever lived without.

This unit is excellent - and there are other good ones out there as well - but for performance you cannot beat the DV-37. Resale on the Elite line is also high compared to others, i.e. Toshiba 9100's retail for $1800+ but you can buy them anywhere for $900. - and on eBay for $500.00. Doesn't make since. DV-37's retail for $1000. and if you look around at a LOT of sites - you'll spend $625. to $675.

Get this one and see what you've been missing!

    Strength:

    Picture quality, features, flexibility

    Weakness:

Remote with small glow in the dark buttons. Layer changes take way too long.

For some reason Pioneer can't seem to make a decent remote. Small hard to use buttons and no backlighting make the remote useless during movie viewing. Thankfully I have a Sony RM-AV2000 and I don't have to deal with the Pioneer remote daily. The other problem with my sample is the time needed for layer changes. My 3 year old Toshiba changed layers MUCH faster. Other than those somewhat minor complaints, the unit performs well. Setting up the unit is easy, the on-screen menus are easy to navigate and offer a plethora of adjustments and settings. Quick loading and fast chapter switching. Much better picture than my older Toshiba units. I have the unit mated to a Pioneer Elite HD-710 projection unit. The image produced by the tandem is simply breathtaking. Very little or no dot crawl, 'movie' like picture that is free that 'video' look. First TV/DVD combo I have seen that rivals film projection. Audio quality is also very good both with DVD and CD software. I still prefer my 5 year old Audio Alchemy CD transport/DAC/Anti-jitter setup by a wide margin over the DV-37 for CD audio reproduction. Over all a good buy for the money. Looking at the much more expensive Panasonic, Sony, Pioneer Elite and Toshiba units I think the DV-37 is a good product for the $700 I spent on it.

This player has a very excellent picture. I spent some time trying to find out if my XBR Sony would actually display a progressive scan picture. Unfortunately, only the new XBRs will display a progressive scan signal. Other than that issue (with the TV not the DVD player) I am really pleased with the performance, the fast access of the chapters and the virtual elimination of visual artifacts. Definitely happy with my purchase.

DV-37 is my second DVD player after Toshiba 3107. I have had this unit for about 6 months now. I am very happy with it. Compared to Toshiba, the picture quality is outstanding, and the audio superb. I do notice a brief pause when changing layers.

The unit is very quiet. I use it primarily for DVD's. though recently I have begun to use it for playing CD's as well (in addition to my Rega Planet CD player). I hear more details with the DV-37 than Rega, though Rega is less fatiguing to my ears.

My set up: Proceed AVP processor, Bryston 9B-ST amp, B&W 804's front, B&W 805 center, and B&W CD1SE for rears.

    Strongly recommended.

Dianne said in her review, that there is a problem playing all DVD format's.
Hmmm...I own the "Dinosaur" Special edition to....and it work's great ! Forget her review and save the money . There is no need to buy the 38A !

I think that she got one unit with a failure o a dirty lense.

To test the Player I loaded a VERY scrachy disk ( My 3 year old son got it in his hands...)...and guess what ?! It still work's !

Lightweight Build Quality and Video Problems

After 1 month started to get wash out on Dark images with tiny colored dots covering Blacks and Burgundy colors.

Took the unit back to dealer and after they looked at the problem they tried the same two movies in another DV-37 and their other unit had the same problem!!!

Tried the same two movies on the cheap Toshiba and Pioneer DV 434 players and the dark colors were fine!! I am not a Toshiba fan but they made me a deal on a 9200 Toshiba and the video looks just as good as my Pioneer Dv 37 did when it was new. The DV 37 is just as sharp and looks just as good as 9200 when you are looking at BRIGHT images. The only difference is the 9200 reproduces dark colors without the snow. The unit also feels like it is built better. I could not care less about the DVD audio capabilities. Just wish someone would make a good heavy duty DVD players that concentrated on nothing but great VIDEO performance. I also noticed the Toshiba 9200 is quieter than the DV 37. I just wish it did not say "TOSHIBA" on the front. If Pioneer had come out with a DV-09 with progressive scan, I would have bought it. The manufacturers are doing the same thing with DVD players they did with VCR'S.... making them cheaper and lower quality!!
