Good price for what you get. Well layed out remote. DTS sounds prety good.

Not a bad unit.....especially for the money. Believe it or not, I'm now running it into a Theta Casablanca I borrowed for the weekend. The sound on DVD is not bad...but obviously not the top of the mountain either. On CDs, you can forget it...but then, what do you expect for 180 bucks. Anyway, for youngsters or those just starting out, you may want to give it a try.....college students...heads up. My rating will look a little low because there are obviously better units out there. But for the budget consious, it may be just what the doctor ordered.....

Awesome video and audio playback

Light weight--but does that really matter sitting in my stero cabinet?

I have owned my 414 since December of 1998. I have NEVER ran into the lip sync problem, nor have I heard of it until reading this article. I payed well over $299 for the system, and it was worth every penny. For those of you upset with your $299 purchase, sounds like you got some factory refurbs or rejects. ITS YOUR OWN FAULT for purchasing it from some junko place like Circuit City!!!!

I have to agree with all the positive comments. As to the negative comments. I've found that I've exchanged DVD titles that I had a problem with and the problem went away. To discount the "manufacturing" process is just plain ignorant. I own 60 titles thus far and have rented just about everything Hollywood Video carries on DVD without fail. The two titles I've had problems with are "The Quiet Man" and "Rio Bravo". The first had an incompatible DD version and the latter was a very poor "transfer" or "mastering" job. For the price I don't expect this unit to play every flipp'n version of Dolby Digital, but I do expect the manufacturers to stick with at least one standard supported across all brands of players. Is that too much to ask?

Remote kinda stinks, No CD-RW support(but you cant have everything)

I like this unit, Yea the remote sucks, but there are plenty of All-In-one replacement remotes that you can buy if you dont like this remote(I.E. Marantz RC2000 MKII).

Like a lot of other people I HAVEN'T seen any "Lip Sync" problems, The DVD-Player menu itself is kind of weenie. But other than that, Its been a great player.

I love the fact that it can play CD-R. The benifit is that you can make a Video-CD on your Computer(I.E Home Video's, MPG's etc...) and this player will play it without a hitch. It also plays Audio Cd's off of a CD-R just fine to. Even Sony's Higher end DVD players won't read CD-R's(they will read CD-RW though, even though they dont admit that). This thing has all a lot of outputs for the money.

Overall I enjoy this DVD player. It was expensive when i bought it, but that's how technology works. I would defently recommend this to anyone and everyone.

DVD Spin-up Noise

I've owned the 414 for almost 2 years and I'd have to say it's been a fantastic player. I have over 200 DVDs and have yet to find one that poses any problems for it. I've never experienced any lipsync problems or seen any motion artifacts and I have it connected to a 55-inch RPTV. Only minor glitch is when it switches layers, it pauses for about 1/10th of a second but otherwise is perfect.

I have the 414 and the lip sync problems also! It's a great player on every other level but a defect like this is horrible when pioneer won't fix it. I am trying to see if I can return it even though I'm past my 30 days. What a shame!
BTW the hookup doesn't matter, I've seen it on mine with analog and digital hookups, it makes no difference.

good competent dvd

Sound not as crisp as others

I bought the DVD in August of 98 (one of the first)for 499. Have had overall pretty good experiences with it so far. As for movies, does a pretty good job, though the sound could be cleaner. As for audio, not much better than my denon CD player. Have not had lip sinc troubles. I think the remote is OK. The biggest drawback is that there is no slow reverse, but for a entry level DVD what do you expect?

Decent DVD player for the money. Has ample outputs (component video, 1 coax dig. and 1 opt). Got it for around $350 1/99.

Remote blows - i hate trying to find the button I need in the middle oa movie when its dark. Buttons are mostyl indistinguishable by touch. Pioneer would do a great service to their customers if the remote was improved.

Overall, affordable DVD player with good features. Nothing really to write home about, but good for the entry level audio enthusiast.

Great picture, abililty to play HK VCDs and CDRs

On certain discs there's a little disc noise on menu screens

I've had mine since May '99 and I love it. I especially love the fact that it plays my HK VCDs and CDRs (where the Sharp and Panasonic units my friends own just spit them out). I avoided the production run with the alleged lip synch problem, I've had no problems whatsoever with that. People complain about the remote, and while yes, it could be better, it's certainly functional, you just have to look at what you're doing sometimes. Perfect, no...forgivable, certainly. The slow-mo is great, the FF step goes at 10 second intervals, which works quite nicely I find. I do notice a bit of disc noise with certain discs, mainly on menu screens (the new line platinum series comes to mind, maybe it's just me). I'm thrilled with mine, and would recommend it to anyone.

Paid 299.00 about 9mths ago. Absolutley no problems, excellent picture.
