Strength:

This DVD player is loaded with options for the $$$. Including component outputs and dual audio out.

Weakness:

There have been reports of slight error in voice delay from picture on some DVD's, but I have not experienced this problem.

I bought this play a little over a year ago for $299 and it has been one of the best investments I have made in a long time. The quality of the product is excellent and it comes packed with many options found in higher dollar players for a more main stream price. A definate must for anyone considering the DVD genre.

Strength:

picture quality, low price

Weakness:

lip-sync

This DVD player puts out great sound & a great picture, but it doesn't always manage to synchronize the two depending on the disc. Plus, the Pioneer remote & on-screen displays would be outdated even if they introduced them 10 years ago. If you can find a 414 for a good price, get it, but don't expect any frills!

Strength:

Price, product recognition, Ac-3 and DTS outputs

Weakness:

Remote is poorly designed, software menu lacks

Been using this about 7 onths, o problems what-so-ever, however I have noticed on a few discs some slight lip-synch and artifacts. But i do not expect totally hgh end performance from an entry to mid level unit. I will get serious about this type of purchase when the manufacturers get serious about a format. The remote is junk, it needs fewer garbage buttons, better focus on the main buttons, and backlit keypad. The sound quality seems to be based on the actual recording quality, it does make a difference known if there is a major difference in the quality. I would recommend this unit to anyone who wants a reliable product, who is not going to pick it to death, and who trusts Pioneer. 4.1 on a scale to 5

Strength:

Down conversion

If you do not have a television capable of taking advantage of anamorphic transfers, the Pioneer does the best job on the planet of downconverting these images. I have not experienced any of the lip sync problems (I have the latest firmware rev). Great player, great price.

Strength:

picture quality, versatility (dvds, vcds, cdrs, cds)

Weakness:

remote, noisy

i've had this player for a few months, and overall i am very pleased. the picture quality is excellent...i have had none of the lip synch problems mentioned previously. as mentioned before, the main problems with this player are the remote (horribly tiny buttons) and it's also a bit noisy, but if you put it in a cabinet w/ a glass door that's no problem.

Strength:

A lot of features

Weakness:

single speed Scan

For an entry level machine this is a very good buy. I have had this machine for about 6-months now and have had no major complaints. Very reliable and can read many different medias (CD, VCD, CDG, DVD etc.)

Has a lot of features which I may never use, like Component Video out. Although nice to have. As always, I like Pioneer with LaserDisks, and DVD's. DTS ready.

6 months ago I got it for $300. I don't know what the price is now. Probably $270.

Strength:

Plays CDRs,Component Video Out, Optical and Coaxial Digital Out, Excellent Video and DVD Audio, and Tremendous Value($269) vs Performance Ratio

Weakness:

Good but not great Audio for CDs, Small Button Remote

Overall excellent performer for the money. If you are unable to find one, I recommend the Pioneer 525($50 Rebate is available for either model). After watching the most demanding DVDs (Matrix, Fifth Element, Star Trek:Insurrection, Air Force One, etc.) almost flawlesss performance; only notice .05 second pause during dual layer change, no pixelation problems(Panasonic A110)or lip synch problems(model manufactured in May 1999). The remote can be a pain if you have large fingers and no light, however, it does function well enough. Colors appear to be more vivid and true to life as opposed to the Panasonic A110 or RCA 5200P, in which colors appeared sterile. One Year Parts and Labor Warranty is a plus also(just ask any second generation Panasonic DVD Player owner), I just hope I will never have to use it. Great Value, however, if this player does
crap out, I will purchase the Sony DVP7700.

Strength:

Video and audio quality.

Weakness:

Buttons on remote are small. No back light.

I have had the unit for 1 year and have no problems with lip sync. Slight pause during layer transition. Even though I paid full price I feel it has performed well and meets my expectations when playing DVD movies. It is mated with my Yamaha 2095 and it continues to impress me.

Strength:

Price, Performace, Features, Decent Audio (Dolby Digital & DTS compatible), and Great Picture quality

Weakness:

not possible to dim the orange display - minor complaint

I have played well over 400 DVD movies on this player, and have found it to be an excellent player. Cannot beat the features and performance for the price I paid ($240.00). The only issues I raise, which are MINOR:
1. slight 0.10 sec delay when switching layers, only
noticed on 1 out of 20 movies played.
2. not able to dim the bright orange display.

There was no lip synch problem at all. The player is quiet and has never malfunctioned with any DVD, even the rentals from Blockbuster, ever!!! Movies look great, can not expect better. As for complaints about the menu and remote that I have seen, WHO CARES!!! Who does not have a universal remote anyway that runs their entire home theater system? I have never even used the remote after the first week. As for the menu system -- it remains easy to use, and provides all the functions that I would ever need. Start up is certainly fast enough, and not difficult at all to pause, or find the right scene or scan.

BOTTOM LINE: FOR THE PRICE, FEATURES & PERFORMANCE, THIS DVD PLAYER IS OUTSTANDING. I FOR ONE DO NOT FEEL THE NEED TO CHANGE OR UPGRADE ANYTIME SOON. WELL DONE PIONEER!!! I CERTAINLY HAVE ENOUGH EXPERIENCE WITH THIS PALYER, I HAVE AN EXTENSIVE DVD COLLECTION, AND HAVE WATCHED ALL KINDS OF MOVIES ON IT.
