No significant improvement over DV-525, returned to store

I have a Pioneer SD532HD5 and DV-525. Decided to try DV-434. Although the progressive out gave a slightly better image, it was just not enough to make any difference for me. If this is your first DVD player and you don't want to spend too much on a progressive one, by all means get DV-434 (of course make sure your TV is compatible with it also). My DV-525 is just fine, so I returned the DV-434.

I tried the Toshiba some time ago, recall the progressive input was some what better than DV-434. But price was also much higher.

Strength:

Does a whole lot, A WHOLE lot, for not much money!

Weakness:

Plain-Jane construction, but then who watches construction

Opinions are like navels, everyone has one. I've read a lot about this player both pro and con, and to be honest, the only con I can agree with is the plain, lightweight construction of this machine. That said, this DVD player does a whole lot of things well.

You can talk all day about it not being a true progressive scan machine. The same goes for 3:2 pulldown. One thing cannot be denied: this machine rocks. It does just about everything well, including supplying a rock solid, color-saturated picture. Add to that truly wondrous digital sound output and you have a really fine package for a really attractive price.

You can throw rocks at this machine as much as you want. The truth is that us budget buyers have finally found a unit that rivals a whole lot of the home-theater-snobs equipment. I'm happy. And I have some money to spend on other things while I happily munch down my popcorn while I watch crystal clear movies.

I don`t care what anyone says this unit is great for the price and its features. I have a panasonic 36inch super flat screen tv and the picture in all modes is is better than the theater.

Strength:

Inexpensive

Weakness:

Progressive Scan mode is weak.

I was reading all the hype about progressive scan
DVD players and this model was a good entry-level choice
considering the low price. I connected this
to my new Sony Digital 53" projection TV and the DVD
movies were great, I used the component video inputs.

Later on after watching alot of movies, I had people
complain about how blurry the picture was. hmmm??

I turned off progressive scan and used interlaced mode.
That made the images on screen much sharper. Progressive
scan softened the image causing it to appear blurry.

If you want a progressive scan DVD player, this isn't
the choice for you. Frankly, I don't see anything
wrong with interlaced mode. The Sony TV is great,
you don't see the scan lines and the images are sharp.

Other than that, it works for me.

Bright Colors, easy installation, plays anything, great picture

Weakness:

Nothing I have found

I had read so much about this DVD not being true Progressive. I have run it with S-Video, RCA, and Monster-3 Component hook ups. I have to tell you, there is a WORLD of difference in Progressive scan mode with the Monster cables.
I have the Pioneer SD-532HD5 TV and the picture blows me away. After I got everything tweaked, we sat and watched the cool parts of Gladiator and Toy Story 2. My wife liked that the DV-434 plays the Anamorphic DVD in full screen mode automatically.
Everything I have thrown at the 434 has run great, older DVDs, Video CD, even the MP3 CD I burned last weekend.
The DVDs load ultra fast, 3-4 times faster than the GE we had before.
I highly recommend the DV-434 and the SD-532HD5 combination.
