Pioneer DV 440 DVD Players

Pioneer DV 440 DVD Players

DESCRIPTION

Virtually any A/V system has room for the versatile DV-440. At just 2-1/4"" tall, it's the slimmest player that you'll ever see! Its Twin-Wave laser pickup reads DVDs, CDs, audio CD-Rs and CD-RWs, and MP3 CDs. DVDs also look great and CDs sound great. (The ultra-high-resolution Burr-Brown audio DAC delivers one of the highest signal-to-noise specs we've seen!)

For maximum hookup compatibility, all three types of video jacks are included: composite, S-video, and component. Optical and coaxial digital outputs provide the Dolby Digital or DTS bitstream for your compatible home theater receiver.

- Plays DVD-Video discs, CDs, audio CD-Rs & CD-RWs, and MP3 CDs.
- 27MHz/10-bit video D/A converter.
- DVD settings memory.
- Optical and coaxial digital outputs for Dolby Digital/DTS/PCM (96kHz/24-bit-capable).
- 1 set of A/V outputs (composite, S-video, & component video).
- 192kHz/24-bit Burr-Brown audio D/A converter.

Strength:

Beautiful picture, easy setup, slim design, mp3 random playability,

Weakness:

No Zoom. Remote takes a little getting used to. Periodic/frequent picture freezing/skipping

Like everyone else this site helped me to finally decide on the DV440. Unfortunately I did not test it at the store before pruchasing. Wanted something that would play mp3s randomly. This was the one. It matched my Pioneer receiver VSX810s. Amber dsiplay and all. After watching about 10 or so DVDs 90% of which intermittently froze/skipped. I was getting a little fustrated. Rented Jeepers Creepers. The disk would not play the movie. Returned it for another still the same. Cleaned it no go. Would play the other special features on disk but not movie. Back to retailer I go with movies and player. Tried others. Pioneer, Panasoninc JVC all played Jeepers Creepers no prblm. Tried another movie that would skip/freeze in the same place every time on the above mentioned players. All ok. Futureshop brought in another one for me and still the same. If 90% of the movies rented/watched will skip/freeze and some won''t play at all there''s no point in keeping the player just because it plays mp3s perfectly and randomly. Has anybody experienced the same? I know one person who has. Here''s the link: http://www.hometheaterspot.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic&f=20&t=001106

Strength:

Great sound, MP3 Playback, solid movies

Weakness:

I don't know how to switch from the letterbox mode to full screen. Full screen DVD's play fine.

This is a solid DVD player, but what makes it special is the sound. I have been upgrading my sound system for the last year and I read about the importance of a good CD player. I was interested in the Pioneer due to the Burr Brown DAC's.

I started listening to all my old CD's. I have a nice Harmon Kardon system in my car, and this is now comparable. The cymbals have sustain, the acoustic guitars resonate, snare drums snare.... Very nice for the price.

MP3 playback is nice too. I burned a couple of CD's on my computer with some party mixes. Plays great without a hitch.

I have a Pioneer amp (soon to be upgraded), Klipsch speakers all around. M&K sub.

Strength:

CDs sound great, Picture quality is fine. Ease of setup. Slim design (wife plus).

Weakness:

None so far. First DVD player

The picture is bright and clear. The Matrix played fine with no jitters. I understand that this DVD is one of the standards to use. If this is true than pioneer 440 passed the test. However, this unit really shines with it audio. The crystal clear sound from cds is an added bonus. Makes even my Bose system sound great. I tried it on my Nak AV-8 and I couldn't believe both the sound from movies and CDs. A great first time DVD player.

Strength:

MP3 decoding capability, with an on-screen menu for MP3s, small size, smooth play without skips/pauses, very good picture and sound.

Weakness:

None encountered.

Basically, this is a great DVD player, especially for the money. Excellent features and very good performance with great quality. I am very pleased with this product and would highly recommend it, particularly to those who want a good solid machine at a low cost.

Just wanted to say:

Displays folder/track name in 8.3 format, not 8.2 as I mistakenly ,emtioned before.

Also, unit is TOTALLY quiet during playback and initial disk loading

Strength:

Seems to be on of the best deals out there. Excellent (IMO)picture quality, very good sound, plyas MP3 in random mode

Weakness:

Some people complain about remote. I don't care, I use Maratz RC2000 MKII anyways.

Please dont let the fact that this is currently bottom line player discourage you. It is very good indeed. If you dont currently own progressive display device and not planning to get one within a year or two, this is the player to get (BEWARE: if you want prograssive scan, DV-444 may not be a good solution at all, just read review for 434 at http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/volume_8_3/dvd-benchmark-progressive-shootout-2-8-2001.html, I think I've seen info that 444 is no better, but can't find the link now)

Plays everything I throw at it without a hitch - DVD, CD, MP3 CD-R, DTS CD, PAL VideoCD (converts them to NTSC by cutting some lines at the top and bottom), PAL DVD (if they are region free, DOES NOT convert them to NTSC, my TV displays them as B/W). Also plays MP3 disks in random mode. Displays folder/track name in 8.2 format.

It would be nice if it displayed full name for the track/folder, but I dont think any player does this at present.

2 features I'd like to have:

1) Ability to go directly to particular time by punching 013530 for instance to go to 1hr 35 in 30 sec

2) Abiltity to navigate with slider on the timeline to go to particular time (this feature is in my PC based player, and I find it quite convenient)

Strength:

Sleek Design, very light weight, best looking outfit on the market (in my opinion) Remote is good after you use if a couple times,

Weakness:

MP3 navigation stinks, NO S-Video cable included

This is an excellent purchase for your money. I don't know how a "higher-dollar" model would compare to this, but I don't know why anyone would want anything better. It is easy to navigate the various menus and options. It has an expert mode to use during setup and I love all the extra viewing options. This system has a high teck look because it is so thin. It is very versitile. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A DIGITAL RECIEVER AND NOT JUST A DOLBY PRO LOGIC RECIEVER WITH SIX INPUTS. (I origanally was gonna buy two of these but when I hooked it up to dads reciever I realized the only way it would hook up was in stereo mode.) The remote was also easy to figure out. (I don't know why everyone else says it sucks.)

The only problem I have found is the navigation of MP3's. If you have 200 songs on one cd it takes a while to get to song 150 using the up arrow key. I don't know if other DVD players come with an S video cable, but I know this one did not.

I also recommend purchasing it from wholesaleconnection.com because this is the cheapest place I could find it. I recieved the product within 22 hours of when I ordered it via FedEx two day air. (The company is in TN. and I am in KY.) Shipping was expensive at 20.00 though. I spent about 40 hours reviewing this and other DVD players and their prices. I think the Crazyeddie.com price is comparable to 159, but I didn't like the name of the site (sounded risky ... :)

Examples of 2 bad price comparisons I found were at: bestbuy.com "299"
a local store Extreme Audio "225"

There are many many Estores carrying this product and it is very available.

If anyone knows of a real good receiver/speaker combo please email me at "racefan008@hotmail.com" I prefer Kenwood and Technics but I am open to suggestions.

Thanks for reading my review.

Strength:

1. MP3 playback
Wonderful GUI Menu for MP3
Wonderful function for MP3 (random play, program play etc)
2. Video Adjust
Fine Focus, Contrast, Brigtness, Sharpness, Chroma, Hue
3. Robust DVD mechanism
Very fast response & robust reading capability
4. Wonderful outlook design, Very slim.
5. Beautiful VFD display
6. Wonderful Picture & Sound Quality
7. And many many many many. No need to comment...

Weakness:

None. It is true.

I have Pioneer DV-533K, Asian model of DV440. I have used many DVD players, but Pioneer DV-533K is BEST. It is not a lie.

I abandoned multi-channel DTS, Dolby Digital and finalized to 2 channel.

I think Pioneer MP3 function is BEST. It has many unusual functions for MP3 playback. For example, MP3 navigator, random play, folder play, fast search, and etc..

VFD display information is perfect.

Audio & Video quality is excellent for the price. It has also video adjust functions.

Analog Devices ADV7172KST is used for video encoder and
Burr-Brown PCM1742 is used for audio DAC.

And it has many many functions.

I think I will use Pioneer DV-533K for very long time.

It is BEST DVD product for the price.
