Strength:
High quality CD sound reproduction. One of the best low end DVD pictures, the best MP3 Navigator and waffer thin.
Weakness:
Slow loading, unable to dim/turn off LED display, remote control is average in design. When looking for a DVD player, the ability to play MP3s was a must. I researched and tested some of the most popular players out there including Toshiba SD 2710, Hitachi DV-P415, Panasonic RV-31. I'll have to say that there really is no difference in picture quality between these players, but all 4 I tested are superior to older models my friends have purchase in years past. When it came to CD sound reproduction the Panasonic and Pioneer were noticably better, but that is not why I chose Pioneer. I chose Pioneer because of it's waffer thin size and the MP3 Navigator. Pioneer was far superior to the competitors on these two items. This player is more than a 1/3 thiner and manages to fit in that tiny space in my T.V. stand along with my receiver and not quite obsolite VCR. Like most T.V. stands the space in mine is limited, so I apprechiate that Pioneer keeps wasted space to a minimum. The 2nd big selling feature is Pioneer's superior MP3 navigator. Full directory tree display, with a selectable playlist, direct song # selection from the remote. Time elapsed/remaining display and more. Plus if you don't plan to use the T.V. to navigate your MP3s, the LED display on the player will show song names and time elapsed/remaining. Lastly a feature not found on all players is the ability to fast forward through MP3 songs. If you plan to listen to MP3s, this is the player for you. Toshiba was a close 2nd, but you will not be able to fast forward throught the songs. I am more than satisfied with the Pioneer DV-440. Strength:
MP3 player, sound quality, the slim design, and price.
Weakness:
None so far. Finally a Pioneer product that plays MP3 music. I have been looking for a player that supported MP3. I really just like the Pioneer brand (all of my other components are Pioneer) The DV-440 has a easy to navigate MP3 graphical interface. Although, this is my first DVD player purchase I think this has got to be the best DVD player in this price range. Another cool feature is that it plays all DVD formats out right now as far as I know!! I am really happy with my purchase. Similar Products Used: Pioneer's 25 Disc CD Changer(PD-F605). None that I've seen I bought this DVD player based entirely on the reviews at this site. My reliance on AudioReview.com was well placed. This is a fantastic piece of equipment. Connected to my 27" Toshiba flat screen in the bedroom via component video cables, the picture is amazing! I have a Toshiba SD-6200 in the living room with a Mits 65" HDTV and the picture is only slightly better in the progressive mode. I am really blown away by the picture the Pioneer/Toshiba combo gives me -- especially for the price. Similar Products Used: Panasonic, Pioneer, Toshiba |

Strength:
low profile, pleasantly smooth mechanics, outstanding sound, intuitive remote design
Weakness:
slow moving disk tray. I find this an amazing DVD player for the price. I have spent a good year looking for the right entry level player. I have no regrets over my decision to purchase the DV440. For under $200 I not only have a great DVD player, but also find the Burr-Brown D/A converter that Pioneer has installed to provide better sound rendering than my NAD 501 CD player. The NAD CD player is no longer part of my system. Similar Products Used: none. |

Too soon to know this. I would have waited until the six month mark to write a review, but since the holiday shopping season is coming up, I would love to push people into this entry level DVD player. Nothing in the price range touches this player. I was shocked at the picture and sound quality produced on this unit. It also played all the DVDs that gave my other player fits (three discs). For the price, I have no doubts that this is the best non-progressive player on the market. Oh, and Pioneer finally made a unit that is pleasing to the eye as well. Similar Products Used: Sony |
