Good looking dvd player , Picture is great and nice silver finish.

I think its too thin.

I had the choice to choose either the sony 700 or pioneer 444 , i went for the dv 444 because my boss said its better than sony .

Only plays MP3 (MPEG1) format not MPEG2 or greater

I expected this one to play all MP3 formats ,It only plays MP3-MPEG1 format which is a pain as all MP3 converter tools does MPEG2 and greater.

I am satisfied with the video and VCD, DVD, CD playbacks.

In my opinion one of the most dvd palyer all around.
The video quality is outstanding, the black is very black. The audio quality is outstanding too, with very high definition of channels on my Yamaha amplifier. The remote is not so good, too many buttons and it's impossible to use in the dark ambient, but I don't care of it. I use the remote control of the yamaha. The cd audio music is impressive too, like my marantz cd4000, with a very good separation of channels. The only problem i had in about two months was with "a bug's life" from Disney, at chapter n°17 the dvd stopped it, you must press stop and going at some seconds after. With any other dvd i hadn't problem, like Matrix for example. The player is very quick to recognize the type of media and to read it. The mp3 player is fantastic too. No problem with cd re-writable recorded at 4speed with many directories on it. Fantastic. I think it's a better player all round for this price. Buy it! ;-)

Looks, Picture & sound, exactly what you buy a DVD for

unstylish remote & muddled looking controls on it

From when I first saw the Pioneer DV444 in the shop I was drooling over its good looks, the salesman urged me to buy it as well which didn't help, but there are more than good looks involved I had to think logically, so I asked for a demo, and wow I was impressed, my Toshiba sd100e was only 6 months old, but I had to have one.
Cinema is fantastic in picture and sound, CD quality is better than my Marantz cd63, clear and precise with good ambience, then I tried some Mp3 disks I had, with equal satisfaction. For the price they put in a Multiregion chip.
Am I happy, you bet your life I am, its got the lot and it performs the lot.
I just read a review in What HiFi magazine which really rated it except the cd quality, sorry, although I normally trust their judgement, this time I disagree with them totally, cd quality is very good, when buying equipment your the best judge of what you hear or see.
