Strength:
audio section
Weakness:
build quality, really cheap plastic disk tray I have only had the unit for about a week and so far am very happy with the player they video section is so superior to the sony player it replaced. I have limited listening time on the audio capabilities as I blew all my money on the player and cables to hook it all up so not any left for some good SACD or DVD Audio discs but that will change soon. What little I have heard has sounded wonderful. |

Strength:
Amazing video; great CD sound; a lot of tweaking features; plays PAL discs too.
Weakness:
built quality perhaps This review is for the player out of the box with no tweaking. What a player! Amazing interlaced output; killer progressive. This player also elevated my CD sound; I am hearing what I didn't before (with legato pro off). I still have to test the DVD Audio and SACD. One thing I really liked was the player's versatility; throw anything and its going to play. I still have a lot of testing to do with those 16 video parameters. I did a comparison test with the Sony NC900V and the Denon 3800; both these are better built but that didn't prove that they are better products than the Pioneer model. Strength:
OSD, automatic syncing for all formats, quick loading of discs, a beautiful DVD picture, remote, sound quality, Yeah I like it a lot!!
Weakness:
The remote buttons glow in the dark. It would be nice to have a back lite button, I'd like to see a thick black brushed aluminum face plate. I simply love this machine. It automatically locks onto any signal you give it. I wish my preamp had this feature. I now use the DACS on the 47A over my preamp and simply leave my preamp in 6 channel direct mode. The 47A also has a very easy to use OSD for bass management, gain controls for each speakers and other bells and whistles. THe 47A sounds wonderful. DVD-A and SACD are clean, articulate, and just fun to listen to. I seem to like DVD-A a little more then SACD but I think it is the mixing of the few CD's have have for each format. DVD-A has a much better case. It's sturdy and a big upgrade from standard CD jewel cases. SACD got cheap here they give u the old style case with a paper insert that goes over the case. I'm not happy about that and initself is a good reasonto buy more DVD-A discs. 2 channel music is also wonderful in this player. It loads discs fast has a heavy, removable power cord and a great instructional manual. TH remote works nice too. I am looking to buy a second unit for my bedroom. So now you have to excuse to sit on the fence and ponder which format to buy. Start listening and let your friends wait. Similar Products Used: Denon 1500, Pioneer DVDs, etc. |

Weakness:
Built quality.(only compared to the dv37 and dv38a.) The DV47a is a great dvd player. The video is sharp and clean. The audio quality is where I found it to be its strongest. It has clear and accurate sound reproduction. It really shined in comparison to my first DVD player in the Pioneer dv414.I was shocked how much better it sounded, like the older played lacked deatail. The SACD side is as good as I heard on other SACD player, but the lack of software support hurt's this feature. DVD AUDIO is also hurting from software support,I have taken a liking to DVD audio the little I heard on it over the SCAD side.Might be the fact that DVD AUDIO has more music that I perfer to listen to.Both formats sounds unbelievable. The built quality is the only thing I can say negitive about this player,The dv37 and the dv38a smoked it in built quality. It doesn't matter now, after the first time I used it, I was so taken by it's performance,I forgot about its average built quality. Strength:
DVD audio and SACD (and CD) playback. Excellent.
Weakness:
I wouldn''t have minded if it had LOOKED as an audiophile player as well... Build quality could be better. I was really just looking for a decent DVD player, but the DV-47a turned out to be a quality audio player. SACD and (in particular) DVD audio actually sounds good enough to be comparable to my trusty old vinyl player (a Linn LP12). In my book, that is quite something. Redbook CD''s sound far better than I expected as well. It is substantially better than my old Arcam 7. Video quality is excellent as well, but that was what I expected... |

Strength:
ability to play all formats, musical sound, not dry and lifeless.
Weakness:
No HDCD ability A great, great player. Music is just flat beautiful from SACD and DVD A. Better than the SACD and DVD A player I had before by a good margin. No complaints whatsoever. Picture is sharp. Colors right on. Don''t see any problem with Reds. Regular CD sound with Legato Pro is quite good, better than the two previous DVD players I had. Outstanding discs: Grateful Dead discs, Beethoven and Eagles on DVD A; James Taylor, Mary Chapin carpenter, Alison Krauss on SACD. Not perfect, but not far from it. Strength:
Plays all formats, sound is exceptional
Weakness:
it is picky about the burn rate on CD-R''''''''s Thank you Pioneer for a quality multi-player (Apex sucks)! I bought a few dvd-a and sacd titles from Amazon when i bought the player, and holy balls do they sound good. Prior to listening to the high definition audio, i thought that CD sounded pretty good...not anymore. Listing to the Tchaikovsky 1812 Overture on both CD and SACD, it is not even a comparison. I have never been able to feel like i am actually listening to the concert, but with SACD i did...i just turned off the lights, closed my eyes and just listened. Quiet passages are incredible, no hiss at all. When the choir sang, it filled the room, and you could pinpoint and listen to an individual person! Then at the end, the canons began. I had the volume at a fairly good amount, and when the first cannon went off, i nearly jumped out of my skin! The other dvd-a titles did not impress me as much, but are still a lot better than CD. I bought the Metallica Black album, Hootie and the Blowfish as well as Missy Elliot. Hootie kept the sound fairly standard, keeping the vocals in the front, and making it feel like you were listening to him at your local bar. Metallica went a little bit further and had some vocals and guitar flying all around the place, which is pretty cool i guess, but you don''''''''t feel like you are actually listening to them. Lars'''''''' drums sound incredible and the lead guitar stands out a lot more. Overall the dvd-a is at least twice as good as the CD. As for Missy Elliot, she did the most outrageous compilation. Everything was all over the place...it almost made me dizzy, but nonetheless was very captivating listening. The only problem i have with this player is that it is picky about the burn rate of the CD-R''''''''s. I usually burn my CD''''''''s at 8x, but the pioneer skipped a lot at that burn rate, so i dropped the burn rate down to 2x and seems to be fine...it just sucks that i have to go through and burn all of my CD''''''''s again. Strength:
Audio and picture.
Weakness:
Looks good but construction does lack a sturdy feel. Also the "back-lit" remote is so dim that it is difficult to use in a dark room. I''m not going to go into the detail of the previous reviews but, simply, this is certainly the best DVD player for < $1000. Stunning, crisp picture. I have not observed the "blocky" red aspect which dbass noted in a prior review even while watching some animated movies which had scenes filled with red. Perhaps his difficulty is more a poor pairing between this player and his TV; sometimes even two decent products just do not work well together. As far as audio, this is where the unit really distances itself from those in this price range. Excellant. This unit works well with my Marantz receiver and M&K surround system. |
