Strength:
Very, very cheap basic player! Can be had on eBay for $40 to $75 bucks. The Macrovision (analog video copy protection) can be easily defeated for those with projectors or TVs that show geometric distortion due to it. The region coding can also be easily defeated.
Weakness:
Terrible, terrible remote control layout. No back-lighting and all the buttons are the same basic size and shape. Not able to output a DTS bitstream from DVDs (but has no problem with DTS-encoded CDs). Mine absolutely will not play CD-Rs or CD-RWs, while others have reported some success. I bought this model as an entry-level player (my reference had been, and still is to some extent, LaserDisc). I've used it for two years now and it has performed flawlessly. I have NEVER seen (heard?) the lip sync problem on any of the 200 DVDs I own, including the Matrix and some other known buggers. The video performance isn't the best and newer players can easily beat it, however, the picture quality is very good for such a basic player. There are some minor MPEG artifacts visible from low-bitrate DVDs such as the vanilla Fifth Element, but its Superbit version looks stunning. It has the chroma up-sampling bug/error but most of the time it's not really noticeable unless I'm watching cartoons or Toy Story 1 or 2. The audio performance is good, but a bit thin and flimsy. I prefer to use the player as a transport and my Marantz DP-870 as the DAC. Sounds much more full and fluid to me that way. Otherwise, a solid machine for very little money Similar Products Used: Pioneer Elite DV-09, Pioneer Elite DV-38A, Pioneer Elite CLD-97 (modified), Pioneer Elite LD-S2 (modified), Pioneer Elite CLD-59, Yamaha CDC-735 CD player (transport), Marantz DP-870 Dolby Digital |

Strength:
sturdy, good picture quality
Weakness:
No frills. component video or dts. Remote is too small. I've used this player for more than a year with no problems. It works well but only has the basic features. I have no plans to replace it because it does the job well. Switching layers may be a tad slower than some higher end or newer machines, but it's not even detectable while watching dvd's. This machine can also be made code changeable very easily. Overall it's a good solid basic unit. |

Got it in June 98. This was a great entry level player, definitly one of the less problematic ones. Some people have lip synch problems but I do not have that problem or I do not notice it. It was good back then. |

Strength:
It has played every disc that I have tossed at it
Weakness:
Lip sync problems on SOME movies, and in SOME scenes. It does NOT play CDR, and it says so clearly in the manual and does clearly not play them when you put them in the player. I like it , but as soon as I have the cash I will get another, more expensive, alot expensive Similar Products Used: none |

Ease of Use
Weakness:
Lip Synch problems--beware! I used to think Pioneer made pretty good video products, but this DVD player is a dog. It suffers from terrible Lip Sych problems--especially Austin Powers (sometimes the dialogue is more than a full second off!). Similar Products Used: Toshiba, Denon |

This european machine is quite old now, released in early 1998. Although it could be interesting to know something about it anyway. |

Strength:
Very reliable, plays evreything I have put in it (i.e. VCDS, CDRWs)
Weakness:
slow with some menus, layer switch could be faster, remote could have a better layout (and light up) The DVD 505 is a good solid player. I my only true complaint is the electronic interference I have been getting with my machine. I assume it is a problem with my hook up and not the DVD player. Also, as DVDs become more and more loaded, I have a feeling that this player will not be up to par with the newest players out there. The Matrix main menu runs slow, but then again, everyone has one porblem or another with that disc:> Similar Products Used: Have seen the Panasonic A110 in action |

This player has been my only DVD player. I'm happy with it. It is older, but I bought it new in mid-98. I disagree with the other poster. I like it's CD-audio output. It sounds very nice. BUT, since my main CD player is an 1990 Technics SL-PG300, my ears may need an uplift. |
