Strength:

Good value. 24/96 digital output.

Weakness:

Noisy tray and drive.

I am very satisfied with the video and audio quality during playback of movies in a home theater system and have had no problems. In addition, I use it in a separate audio system together with an MSB Link DAC for playing stereo CDs. The Link DAC greatly improves the stereo audio with the Pioneer functioning fairly well as a transport. The tray is noisy, and the drive also sometimes makes noise, but these problems are not really bothersome. The analog output quality for stereo CDs is not very high but is probably at least as high as that of the CD players found in places like Best Buy and Circuit City. The Pioneer can also play 24/96 audio DVDs, which really are a significant improvement over standard CDs. However, these DVDs cost too much ($25 - $30) and are very limited in selection.

In summary, the Pioneer is strongly recommended.

Strength:

Amazing Picture and Sound. 5.1 and component video. Value.

Weakness:

NONE!!!!

I bought this the week after Christmas and could not be happier. I have had not one problem playing purchased movies or rented ones. The only one that could not read was a rental that had a smudge of food on it. Cleaned it off and no prob. I do not know what the others are griping about the loud tray are talking about. I get no noise during playback. I picked this up at a local retailer for $299 and mailed in my $50 rebate. I have since seen it advertised at Best Buy for $249. No more $50 rebate though. Do yourself a favor and buy this.

Strength:

Componenet outputs, DTS, reads CD-R's and CD-RW's, dual laser

Weakness:

small remote

Picture and sound on my old RCA 27'TV was so good that it
prompted me to go out and get a new Zenith 27' with component inputs. Superb picture and audio with no poroblems playing any of my DVD's. It can't be beat for the price (got a $50 rebate) but I do wish the remote was a bit
larger. Definately recommended.

Strength:

Plays ANYTHING perfectly, all the outputs u need, No lip Sync, GOOD PRICE

Weakness:

none

This is the best dvd player u can get for the price. Plays everything perfect (Matrix, Terminator 2, Aliens, Die Hard) The player feels a little on the cheap side(light), but who's going to be throwing the thing around anyways? The drive noise that people have been complaining about, well, the only part where its "Loud" is when u first put the disk in. After that, u can't hear it at all.

Sound is fantastic (I lub my missions :-) )

Picture is VERY GOOD. I can't see a big difference in picture quality between standard and S-Video cables. If u can see a difference between componant and S-video, your nuts.

JVC RX-888

Mission MS77C2 (center)
Mission MS77DS (rears)
Mission MS700AS (sub)

JVC makes good receivers (at least the newer ones)

Great Picture

This a great player for the price. I had narrowed it down to the Toshiba and the Sony when a man at Costco told me that the Pioneer was the best unit for the price (he said he had bought other units and had to return them)and it had a $50 rebate through Pioneer. I promptly booted up my computer to this site and read all the great reviews and I was sold. I paid $269 at Costco and with the $50 rebate and the usual 5 free DVD's etc.. it was a deal! The componet video is superb with the Toshiba Colorstream TV. Sure the unit is light, the remote dinky... the drive a little noisy but who can hear it when you have the surround sound going! I have had no problems and I would highly recommend!

Price and Performance

Weakness:

none so far

I picked this unit up a week ago and have watched 4 movies. (not counting the pokemon video that came with it) I got it for $266 and change from Circuit City. The $50 rebate puts it at a nice final price. The 5 free movies and 13 rentals don't hurt either.

So far, the picture and sound have been excelent. No complaints. I like it enough that I purchased a second one yesterday as a Christmas gift for my mother. Now that's an endorsement! :-)

Strength:

It's relatively cheap in the UK (mine had multi-region included), and picture and sound seem very good.

Weakness:

Noisy drawer/disk whilst playing is a big negative. Feels very insubstantial, which gives the _impression_ of poor quality/reliability

This is my first DVD player, and I have mixed opinions. I ordered it on the basis of favourable reviews, and had not seen/used the machine before purchase. Initial impressions on delivery were not favourable - unit is very light and feels flimsy/insubstantial - the UK list price is $600 and at that price I would have distinctly un-impressed - my 8 year old cheap Marantz CD player is much better built. Suspicions confirmed on use - the tray is obtrusively noisy, sounding unstable whilst playing(almost 'rattles'), and easily discerned during quiet movie moments, even when sitting 3m away. Remote control is a joke - it wasn't _designed_ at all, and is atrocious to use in the dark.
Picture and sound quality are entirely satisfactory however - although as a newcomer to DVD and with an aging TV taking composite video in, I'm not getting the best yet.
I'd recommend seeing the machine in use before purchase, and/or spending a bit more

Strength:

Excellent picture quality, component outs, optical digital audio, s-video, excellent remote, well-built but light chasis.

Weakness:

Disc spin motor can be loud at close distances.

This is an excellent DVD player for the price. This player shares many of the same components as the Pioneer Elite models for a fraction of the cost. Unmentioned strengths include user-friendly menus, audio and video support for non-Dolby 5.1 systems. The sound reproduction offers many options including PCM out, 96Mhz or 48Mhz out.

While the dvd motor can be loud, it is easily undetectable when sitting five feet away or more. For DVDs with bad layering problems, this Pioneer model can be susceptible to brief pauses. Otherwise, this component plays flawslessly.

Strength:

This is a great piece of machinery. A very solid DVD-player
with twin-laser technology. It also does cd-r and cd-rw with
home-made vcd and also it does mpg files recorded as vcd.
I had mine modified so i can watch movies from all regions.

This thing is really great.

Weakness:

The drive is rather noisy which is noticable during real silent moments in the movie.

This is for me the best DVD-player in its price-class.

I only paid Fl 800,= and it displayes the movies on my wide-screen tv just ......wel just great.
I know there are people who have problems with this drive, but me, I don't have any problems with sync or so.

Thank you Pioneer.

Strength:

Sharp, clear picture, easy setup

Weakness:

Still looking

After about two months of reading reviews and asking questions, I had it narrowed down to the DV525 and Toshiba's SD1200. Both were on sale last weekend. The latest issue of Home Theater magazine has a good article on the Pioneer, but was still worried about the dark picture I was reading about, also the artifacts on the Toshiba display. I wrote to the author of the review; he was kind enough to respond and reiterate his thoughts on the Pioneer being a worthy DVD player. He then pointed me to the technical editor of the magazine who had more hands on time with both players. The T.E. also responded (same day!)with what finally swayed me; Both are excellent players, but if it were him purchasing, would take the Pioneer for a 4:3 display, and the Toshiba on a 16:9 display. Sold to the man with the 4:3 set. Took about 10 minutes to connect and setup. 30 minutes to calibrate picture (I'm picky and want a clear, sharp display). Started the first movie (Godzilla 98) and could not stop grinning. Excellent picture, great sound even from Pro-Logic receiver. Heard no transport noise at "low theater" volume. No problems with The Matrix. Won't comment on the remote. I use Radio Shack's 15-1994 learning remote with backlighting. Using advanced codes I was able to map all needed functions. Why only four stars? Nothing is perfect, but I haven't found anything wrong yet. Excellent player!
