Strength:

Good Picture Quality, Sound

Weakness:

Tray noise!!

This is my first DVD player. I did a lot of research, mainly on this site, and decided on this one - except mine is code-free - thanks to everyone.
There are not much else to say about this other than those already said. Sound and picture are both excellent for the price.
One thing you should really know is tray noise. I thought it would not be a big problem as many reviews stated, but since my rack is Salamander Archetype and there is no glass door or stuff like that, but even though I sit 7ft from it, it IS noisy. DVD movie is fine, but when you listen to classical music, it can be really annoying. Even my older CD player of a mini system is not as noisy as this. Therefore, overall rating is 4 and I am already thinking of getting CD-only player. Or if anyone is interested in buying this one from me, let me know. Purchased a few weeks ago, and it is brand new and code-free.

Strength:

Plays DVDs well. Doesn't clip or run choppy. As can be expected, when viewed in 5.1 surround, movies really come alive. I really like how the remote looks and feels.

Weakness:

I do not like the shuttle capabilities of this unit, or should I say the lack thereof. I cannot fast forward or rewind smoothly (while watching that is). It skips from one picture to a frame a second or so later. Can't ever get it to stop at the desired time.

Pioneer, as expected does a really nice job with its products. The unit itself is very aesthetically pleasing as well. I think that the unit is well worth the money spent.

I used to have a DVD player on my computer with a DXR-2 card, from which i got the 5.1 effects from. Getting a stand alone unit is a move in the right direction, for sure.

Strength:

CD-R capability, PAL/NTSC switchable output

Weakness:

Remote control

I didn't compare too many DVD players before I bought this one, so I can't say that the picture or sound quality is better or worse than others, but it's perfect as far as I can see/hear

The motor can be heard when on the Menu of some disks, and when ejecting, but it can't be heard during movie play.

The remote control that I have (one of two styles I believe) is the Remote From Hell. All the buttons are the same small size, and arranged so the play, pause and stop keys are buried in the middle somewhere. You need to turn a light on to find them. Whoever designed this remote needs to be sent back to user-interface school. What makes it worse is that my 'universal' remote control doesn't learn any of the keys.

Strength:

Good sound and picture.

Weakness:

Remote. Noisy.

Very good picture and sound for the price. No problems with any movies I've played yet. Plays CDR and CDRW. The remote is crap, but I use a universal remote anyway. The mechanism is a little noisy while playing DVDs but it doesn't bother when I close the cabinet door.

Strength:

very good picture, good sound even from my TV.

Weakness:

none

Played every movie I put in flawlessly, had an excellent picture and the sound blew me away, I surprised my TV could that, but their was one minor flaw, "The Perfect Storm" had a slight split second pause in it the scene where the weather man is predicting what happens when the storms collide in his office or whatever and his secretary is standing next to him, anyways I very happy with it, I can put in a better review later when I upgrade all my cables and get my Klipsch Quintets.

My setup so far:
Sony 43" TV KP-43T75
Pioneer DV-525

Strength:

great features for a low price

Weakness:

poor quality

I just bought my unit for $239. I really wanted to love it, but unfortunately it just hasn't performed the way it is supposed to. The picture is great and the sound is unbelieveable - that is when there is sound. I have watched four DVDs and at some point in each one there is a complete loss of audio. If you stop and then hit play again, audio returns. The problem remained when I switched from an optical to a coaxial cable. After all the problems with the 414, I was hoping Pioneer would get all the bugs out of their next model. For everyone's sake, I hope this is just an isolated case ...

Strength:

No noticeable lip sync, pixelation,
down conversion or freeze-up problems
as other models from sony, panasonic
& toshiba.

Weakness:

Unrefined sound during tray open/close
and more noisy during playing.

I've only played about 3 movies on this
pioneer, but so far am happy with it.
I had a Sony 330 before and noticed
the lip sync right away. I did notice
some artifacts during fade-in and fade-
out sequences, but I can live with it.
The noise during playing of discs is
ok for me, as I have a glass door on
the rack, which I close during playback.
I'm giving this the highest rating even
though it's not perfect because this
is the best DVD player for the money
at this point in time. But I do think
that the manufacturers have their work
cut out for them.

Strength:

attractive styling, features, plays cd-ra's, cheap

Weakness:

noisy, no remote back-lighting

Great DVD player for the money ($250).
Nice looking machine (except for gold accents).
Has every needed input.
Has every needed feature (can program DVD chapters).
Video quality very good (Panasonic was a tad better).
Movie audio quality very good (Panasonic was a tad better).
CD playback near perfect (much better than Panasonic).
Plays cd-ra's that i burn on Phillips cdr-880.
One year warranty.

BUT:

Machine is noisy when it spins a disc (common complaint).
When shuffling audio tracks during playback of a cd-ra,
plays half second of audio of following track before
it shuffles to next random track. Anyone else notice this?
Remote much better than Panasonic but still could be
improved (no back-lighting).

SUMMARY:

For the price, an excellent machine that should not
disappoint. Has every needed feature. No problems
during playback (Panasonic skipped over 10 minutes
on Mask of Zorro DVD). GET IT!

Strength:

Flexibilty with other media, Ease of use and setup, Great AC3 sound using optic and digital cable.Good picture quality.

Weakness:

Little sensitive to old DVDs as well as fingerprints

A very good product overall considering the price and goes well with other gears. I could'nt get any other product with this price range that would not compromise quality.
