Strength:

Price; features

Weakness:

None

Got all the important features like dolby digital and dts and component input. The only thing missing is progressive scan output. But hey, how many of us has a progressive scan TV at this point?

Got it for $250 at Costco. After the $50 rebate, it's $200. Dirt cheap. Haven't used it much yet, except played parts of Bladerunner. No problems yet. Hey, for $200 I am not complaining.

Strength:

Price, features, plays CD-R, CD-RW, VCD

Weakness:

no variable speed search, small buttons on remote

I got this DVD player for christmas and so far I love it! I researched for a few months before I bought this and I believe that it is without a doubt the best DVD player with the most features for the price. I paid just $200 for it after the rebate. I love the fact that it will play any kind of media that you throw at it (CD-R, CD-RW, VCD, etc). I have only played a few DVDs so far but have loved it, I haven't noticed the noisy spinning like some people have noticed. The picture is crystal clear, now I just need to get a DD reciever (Pioneer 608) so I can hear the movies like they were meant to be heard. What a great DVD player!

Strength:

Excellent audio & video

Weakness:

noisy & clunky transport. Not a great remote.

I bought the Pioneer 525 because I wanted a cheap
second DVD player.

I already own the top-of-the-line Sony 7000,
which costs over 3 times more than the Pioneer.

Since this was my first "cheap" player, I immediately
noticed how clunky and noisy the DVD transport was.
I could also hear the DVD player whizzing about as
I watched my movie.

The remote is a bit cumbersome to use as well as
the buttons are all moshed together.

On the plus side, for the price, this is an excellent
DVD player with picture that is SHARPER than my Sony
7000 (Sony tends to soften their DVD picture), and
with DTS audio that is absolutely superb.

Despite all the minor downsides, I highly reccomend
this DVD player as the low-end model to buy.

Strength:

Many different outputs

Weakness:

Wont Play Tomorrow Never Dies Special Features

This is the second one, the first was returned because it would just eject the disk and not even try to play it.
This is the second /replacement 525 and it played the movie on the Tomorrow Never dies DVD but half the special features are pixilated FROZEN GARBAGE. The DVD plays PERFECTLY on my computer however so it's not the disk.
I'll take the disk with me on my third trip to BEst Buy in as many days and try it one more 525 before seeing if a Toshiba can handle it.

This is just a comment - at the store I was at, they had a stack of these players and I noticed something interesting. On some of the boxes was "made in Japan" whereas others had "made in Malaysia". The boxes looked identical otherwise. And from reading this forum, it seems that there are some that are made in China as well.

I'm also considering the Philips 825AT but I can't find this one locally. If any of you have compared the two directly, it'd be great if you could drop me a note. Thanks.

Strength:

Plays CD-Rs, Video CDs with no problems -- excellent video/sound quality.

Weakness:

Lack of a screen saver?

This is my third DVD player and I was specifically looking for one that was capable of playing Video CDs & CD-Rs as I purchase a lot of foreign movies. Both my prior Sony & RCA players had problems with most media -- however, no such problems with the Pioneer at all!

I personally found the picture quality much better than the RCA players and at least as good as the Sony 500? models..

My only gripe is that there does not appear to be a built in screen saver option?

Strength:

Good performence

Weakness:

Loud Tray movement

I liked the DVD525 very much. The tray noise does not bother me since the cabinet door muted it, but it did surprise me how loud it is when I load the disk.

My question is did any of you ever received the promised $50 rebate, 5 free DVDs and 13 free DVD rental coupons? I did not.

Strength:

Great price. Image quality. Sound

Weakness:

None yet

After reading other reviews,I checked it out at Circuit City. Bought it for $249.00 MINUS the $50.00 rebate. Seems like a good unit at $299.00. Much more so at $200.00 net.
Have not seen any lip sync problems. I can see the switch on a double layer (e.g., train station scene in Entrapment) but gees, is this really worth talking about? LOVE the sound, LOVE the image quality.
