Strength:

Great sound and picture. Plays CD-RW's.

Weakness:

Very slightly noisy cd drive.

First I had the Sharp DV600U. Good picture, amazing sound, but a lot of freezes.

Returned the Sharp and got a Sony DVP330. Great picture and average sound. But no significant cost benifit for $100 more.

Returned the Sony and got the Pioneer DV-525. Now I have settled for it finally !!! Reason, Its a great combinaion of price, sound and picture. Very good error correction while playing bad disks. It plays all kinds of dirty rented disks that the Sharp DVD would not play at all. Most importantly, it plays my CD-RW's that I create on my computer. It is a bit noisy when I load and eject disks and during the first 5 seconds of spinning a new disk, but it is not apparent inside a glass case. I can hear it only if Im right in front of the player. Does not bother me much.

All in all, have no regrets. Go for it.

Strength:

Inexpensive, great quality.

I bought this DVD player more than two weeks ago and have watched about 10 movies or so. Every movie except one worked great! The one movie that I had a problem with was "Limbo". At about the end of chapter 17 and in most of chapter 18, the image was broken up. At time, the DVD player even froze, and I had to stop and start it to get it going again. But then again, this only happened in one chapter out of 28 chapters from this movie, and it only happens in one of all the movies I've watched. Also, it could be that the disc that I had was defected, for I replayed the same movie over and over again, and the problem occured at the exact same place. Overall, I am very satisfied with this DVD player since it is inexpensive.

Strength:

price

Weakness:

noise

just a note about the noise, I went to the local best buy and noted their display model hardly exhibited any noise at all when playing and when tray opened and closed, i took a look in the back of the machine and noticed that it was made in japan not malaysia (as mine is). could that have something to do with it? anyways talked to mike in TX and he suggests vibra pods and dynamat to damppen the noise.

Strength:

Price, very good picture quality, mid fi audio reproduction.

Weakness:

Quality control over manudacturing units.

If you compare this unit with other units at this price range Pioneer wins hand down.I would actually compare this to the higher price Sonys and this is saying alot since the Sony 7000 series cost three times as much.

Strength:

Killer value, excellent video and audio quality.

Weakness:

junky controller

I bought this player in November, it was a killer value and amazing quality, especially at the cost. It competes against even those players that are top of the line. The player has worked with every DVD I have tried and the condition memory feature is great. The only problem I can see is that the controller is fairly trashy and the player is a little bit more noisy than other players, but is by no means annoying or even noticeable unless your watching a silent movie.
Great Quality, Great Value, No Problems.. Highly Recommended.

Strength:

Lots of options for the price, easy to understand menu's,

Weakness:

none found so far

After looking for about a year I decided to go with the Pioneer DV-525, It was a very reasonable price and value with the $50 rebate and free movies and rentals. I am very very impressed with the unit as a whole. The remote is as others have mentioned , a little small but easy to use and understand. Saving Private Ryan was just AWSOME when I watched it on the DV-525. At this point the only thing I would give it up for would be a 200 DVD changer like Sony's but not for $800. Great job Pioneer and keep up the fantastic innovating.

Strength:

Excellent picture and sound, can't beat the price. My girlfriend has the DV-414, over a year now with no problems what so ever, so the descision was simple. My only complaint is the cheesy remote and lack of "shut off display button" the 414 has one, why Pioneer chose to delete this button baffles me?.....oh well.Plays CD-RW's with no problem. Coaxial out cable is piped to my TA-9000ES which is powered by my Bryston's, I have to say the sound and image is outstanding for this budget device.Waiting for those progressive scan unit's, this player will tie me over till then.

Weakness:

Noisy tray, cheap remote, no jog shuttle.
no night mode for display.

I love this little player, for the money you can't beat it and it play's my CD-RW's fine, who cares about CD-R's anyway if you can't erase it what's the point?

Strength:

Excellent playback of DVDs & CDRs

Weakness:

Few frills, no front-panel menu access, noisy motor

It lacks a zoom, has a noisy motor, you can't access the menus from the front panel, it doesn't look sexy, it just plays DVDs and CDRs superbly! DVDs that the JVC 501 would not even read play perfectly. No glitches yet. Private Ryan (DTS) was beautiful (is that the right word?) on my 32" XBR Wega. $299 + $6.95 S/H from Crutchfield, -$50 rebate from pioneer, - 5 free DVDs, makes it a steal for about $175! The motor noise is almost inaudible if you have a glass front cabinet. I just wish my JV888 RX remote could control it!

Video quality, price, ease of use

Weakness:

Can hear disks in player, No DD decoder

LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT!!!!

You really cannot go wrong with this player, especially for the price. I have been told this is the best player out on the market for its price, and even better quality than higher-priced models.

A friend of mine wanted my player enough, he said, "I'll give you my Panasonic player plus $$$ for yours."

I am a HUGE fan of Pioneer-produced DVDs ... they are the best ones of my movie collection, so if you figure if they put so much care in their DVD discs, why not the players as well?

I have tried several movies and CDs as well as a VCD. The VCD quality wasn't that great on a whole anyway, but the CDs and CDRs played flawlessly.

I could hear several disks turning in the player, but the volume depended on the disk. You can't tell with the volume on, but sometimes when there is a quiet moment you can hear it. Annoying at first, I got used to it quick enough.

The picture is just phenomenal. Especially with the component out feature. Previously I watched DVDs on my computer, but now you can't tear me away from my television.

I really wish the player had a DD decoder, but that's my fault since I went cheaper for a surround sound system that is DD 5.2 ready but has no decoder. Pro-logic sounds great anyway.
