Strength:
Video and universal disc format playback capability.
Weakness:
Build quality and dubious longevity. Sorry I haven't listened enough to this machine to have an opinion on the sound especially since it does so many formats but the video is very very good, almost as good a a Marantz DV8400, $1500 machine. Don't see how you could go wrong for an entry level all in one machine. Similar Products Used: Toshiba 3950, Philps 727 and 763sa, Marantz Dv8400 |

Strength:
Plays just about every audio/video disc format, including discs with jpg and mp3 files, SACD, DVD-A, and most of the recordable DVD formats
Weakness:
None that I can tell Pioneer's affordable entry level all-in-one player, this machine will play just about every disc format that you can throw at it. I bought it mainly to add SACD to my system, since I already had a Toshiba DVD-Audio player, which I got rid of once I heard the Pioneer. SACD's sound great, although I heard from another source that this unit does not truly decode the SACD information, rather it converts it to PCM format. That's geekspeak to me...I just know it sounds terrific. I'm sure a $1000 machine might do a more pristine job with SACD, but for about 1/6 the price, I will take this one. The thing I like most about this unit is that you don't have to change the settings when you want to switch between the digital bitstream output and the 6.1 analog output, as I had to do on my Toshiba. Once you set it up, you don't ever have to change settings again, which is very convenient. Video quality is also excellent, at least in the Progressive Scan mode that I use. This player is well worth the money Similar Products Used: Toshiba SD-4700 DVD-Audio/Video Player |
