Strength:
Great LD/DVD, maybe CD...use Sony XA7ES for that
Weakness:
My 60 to 65 Laser Discs work fine because I take care of them, but rented DVD's stick half the time. Yes, this maybe my last Laser Disc player. Everytime I walk into the local Ken Cranes (It was named Ken Cranes Laser Disc, it changed to Ken Cranes DVD) the Laser Disc section gets smaller and smaller. I think back during the late 1980's when I was forced to buy a CD player because the records were no longer the prime section. I needed this unit because it had a RF-Mod outlet the newer Laser Discs with 5.1, DTS, etc. require. As a laser Disc unit, it plays and sounds vastly superior then what was my top of the line 1994 Sony. What a difference 5 or 6 years in techology make. About half of the DVDs from my local Video store blur out and at time stick with no forward motion. Sometimes I clean them and retry, other times I return the DVD and get another one. I think that if I would of bought the Pioneer Elite model, it would go through all the junk that other peoples lack of care cause. I notice that cheap CD players do the same thing, which is why I always buy the "High End" models. I didn't buy the Pioneer Elite because I don't know how HDTV is going to effect the upgradability of these types of machines. When the market calms down I will take a look and may use this machine just as a Laser Disc Player. I am very happy, thanks Pioneer Similar Products Used: Older Sony Laser Disc that didn't have an RF-Mod |

Strength:
-Media versatility
Weakness:
-Dark picture I bought this to replace my CLD-D503 which did not support Dolby Digital or DTS formatted movies and did not play DVDs. I am very disappointed with the 919 thus far. It displays a dark picture. If you play a movie that is filmed in a dark setting like The Matrix, be prepared to lose a lot of detail. This happens with both laser discs and DVDs. I plugged my 503 back in for a quick comparison and there was no contest. The 503 had a much better picture. The troubleshooting section of the manual says this darkness is normal for discs that have encoding to prevent disc copying. This is completely unacceptable to me. I'm sending mine back to the manufacturer under warrantee to find out if there is something wrong with my player. Similar Products Used: Pioneer CLD-D503 |
