Weakness:
Reliability is a disaster My universal remote malfunctioned before the dvd player went bad. In the end it only worked for the dvd player. |

Strength:
Built-in Decoder, bundled monster cable, styling, gold jacks
Weakness:
Apparent 'RCA' stigma, I dont know why ... it's built by panasonic. Also, no digital coax. I bought the unit as a floor model for around $200 (they had the box and all acc's), plugged it into my Yamaha RXV-672 (the one with 6ch input) and never looked back. A little sensitive to scratches, but I think that goes for all DVD players. I love the styling. It looks so thin, the low profile makes it look more expensive than it really is. Has ANYONE used the front headphone jack on this thing? Similar Products Used: None, this is my first DVD player. |

Strength:
The picture quality is exceptional and the Dolby Digital Chip seems to work very well.
Weakness:
It does not want to play all audio cd's. And it seems to pick and choose which CDR's to play even though they are the same. I had to send my first unit back to the factory in exchange for a new one. It stopped playing discs altogether and this unit is not a unit that can be repaired at your local repair shop. The picture and audio quality are of course very good, but it does not want to play some CDR discs even though they are of the same manufacturer. It also seems to make a humming sound like so many other DVD players which at times during the quiet moments of a movie can be annoying. My Panasonic players have the same problem, although my Sony players are absolutely silent. So it has something to do with the design of these units. I haven't had any problems with this unit and it seems to play each disc without a problem. It does a good job of playing discs that are scratched as well which isn't something I can say for my Pansonic RV50, which has nothing but problems playing discs with just a mild scratch. So overall my experience with this Proscan 8600P has been very good. Similar Products Used: Panasonic RV30 and RV50 |

Went it worked, good audio and video
Weakness:
Reliability is terrible. Customer service polite but poor When my player reached 14-15 of use it gave a no disk error. I called up Thomson and purchased for $100 (since it was out of warranty) a refurbished replacement unit. The first refurbished unit was bad. Got it replaced. Bad again. Thomson would not return my cost of the $100 even though the transaction happen 2 weeks earlier. Disputing this with Thomson and my credit card. Good remote, Excellent picture, plays all discs
Weakness:
Maybe a little short on all the features of some of the other players. No component outputs. A great DVD player. I have never had any problems playing any discs with this player. Good construction, comes with monster cables. |

Video/audio quality
Weakness:
Rather fragile unit, obvious ultimate failure of optical pickup after only 14 months Owned this player for approximately 14 months when a recurring "no disc" loading problem finally became fatal.Tech support was not helpful at all, offering only the ususal "make sure your dvd's are clean; offered to sell me a refurbished unit at $169 plus exchange.Decided upon a new Sony DVP-S7700 and simply keep all my components "in the family. While still working, would rate the video/audio quality above average to other brands on a comparitive side-by-side basis when unit was NEW;later on layer change and still mode dither problems surfaced prior tothe end all no disc.Advise staying away from this product line for reliability reasons. Strength:
Picture quality good when it played.
Weakness:
Poor quality control. Fast forward jerky. Universal remote did not work on my other equipment even though codes were listed in the manual. The product gave "no disc" error after 5 plays. Tech support polite but not sympathetic. The unit was beyond the warranty period (in household goods storage for over one year) consequently stuck with the $149.00 for a refurbished unit. That would make this unit very expensive and I do not feel worth it. There are newer and better products available. Based on other reviews ProScan does not appear to have a good frequency of repair. Strength:
Good quality picture for the short time it worked
Weakness:
"no disc error" after only a few plays. Lousy customer service and repair/replacement policy I was talked out of purchasing my original choice--a Pioneer--by a Circuit City salesperson. Given that this unit broke after 7 to 10 plays, I'd never purchase another RCA product or make a purchase at Circuit City again. Similar Products Used: Sony and Toshiba similar priced models |
