Strength:

The cables alone would have costed $150.00 then you get 5 free movies at around $25.00 ret. If it only played cds clean you couldn't go wrong . This player rules I was once half asleap and put a cd ontop of a dvd they where 2 thick because it was at eye leval and I couldn't see that there was a dvd in the tray anyway it still played perfectly most cd plyers wont even try that . Now to get to the other strangths it has that cool thing called divx what ever that is it looks cool on the front of my unit it makes it look like it does a lot of neato stuff . The picture is great, the sound is unreal , dolby dig 5.1 with 1000 watts rms of hk power it is better than the movies WOW !! it was only an experiment to start. I wasn't realy into watching movies, but I am now .

Weakness:

The lame manu sometimes. I change my mind befor the thing even lerns that I hit the button.

to sum it up this thing is the best you will find for the money im sure of it if you find one they will sell it to you real cheap and you can use it for the cables and cd for music and its still nice but the movies part is allso great
but you must have a good reciever or you might as well just stick to your stereo vcr .

Strength:

Price can't be beat. Monster Cables included. Seemless layer changes.

Weakness:

Slow menu access. No Toslink included. No Coaxial digital out. Hard to find since DIVX died...

I would say that this player fulfills all of my neccessary requirements for a good first DVD player. I'd been looking at getting one for a long time and couldn't find one that didn't have some sort of known glitch. (OK so it has DIVX but you can just ignore that.) This has played all DVD's flawlessly although I haven't tried some of the ones with DVD-ROM features that seem to give it problems. I got it on a recommendation from the Home Theater Forum and its been just what I was looking for. For $250 you can't beat the features and lack of known problems with this player. I recommend it highly if you can find it anywhere still...

Great Picture

I initially had some problems with the player and return it for another one. The picture is EXCELLENT. I have had no noise problems or anything else. I've yet to see a layer change either.

Strength:

Inexpensive, good quality, dts, component

Weakness:

Remote has no channel skip, bluish tint, bad at playing scratched or damaged discs, yeah, like other people, I agree that the Divx logo is very annoying, and the menu in the beginning is dumb, but you can make it so it doesn't come up every time you put a DVD in.

I got this unit cheap (~210) a few months ago at the Wiz because they were getting rid of all their DIVX machines. I wish I didn't get it for the sole face that it's a DIVX machine, but I didn't have much of a choice. It works pretty well for the most part. It has a slightly bluish tint in some movies. I know lots of DVD's don't have very good black definitions, but when I compare the Matrix on my machine to the Matrix on my friend's Panasonic, there is a pretty big difference in the blueness. I will probably get a different DVD player in the near future, but I am in no hurry in that this is a good DVD player that was at a good price. And of course that fact that it is Proscan and that Proscan rules makes it even better in my book. I don't reccommend it for a new DVD player because there are better ones out for the price, but its not bad for what it is.

Strength:

Played Matrix perfectly. Dual layer viewing is great. multitude of options is also very nice.

Weakness:

remote doesn't open disk tray
(big f***ing deal rite)

After being very pleased with my Samsung 709 for a month, i popped in the now infamous Matrix DVD. I waited 20 seconds and nothing happened. After doing this a multiple of times I realized that something was a miss. So i returned the movie and tried another copy of it. Same sh*t, different copy. So i then decided to check and see if the DVD player itself might be the problem. Alas, the Samsung 709 couldn't read dual layers worth a dam*. So i returned it and picked up the Proscan ps8680z and was amzed. Get this baby at Circuit City while it is available. I definitely reccomend.

Strength:

Looks great, great performance for price.

Weakness:

sometimes spins DVD when off. Doesn't play CD-R

A great value and looks, I'm very happy with mine. The picture is Great, and the features are very easy and useful. It works better than some of my Friends newer DVD players. Most people woud be very happy. If you read the Review of Tom Estell, he is full of it. how can you trust the review of a guy who Doesn't know the Difference between S-VHS, and S- Video. One is a VRC ect(VHS format). As far as the use as a CD player, this generation of DVD’s were only designed to be able to play CD but not be a replacement for CD players. Its good for what it is a DVD player, and an occasional CD player.

Good Picture, Good Audio

Weakness:

Poor Quality player

In August of 1999, I purchased a Proscan DVD Player, Model # PS8680Z. After 6 or 7 months, the unit began to emit an EXTREMELY highpitched whine, even while powered off. It wasn't really loud, due to the high frequency (much like a dog whistle) but it was loud enough to notice and keep me awake at night(player was located in my bedroom). The only way to make it stop was to unplug the player.

I received a replacement unit from Thomson in July of 2000, and after three months of sporadic use, this "new" (refurbished)unit is on the fritz. It has stopped recognizing ALL discs (both DVD & CD) and that whine seems to be back.

I've called Thomson Consumer Electronics, and they claim that all they can do is replace the unit. I've told them that I've already owned two and I don't want another. They seem to be unwilling to send a refund.

I might try to unplug, then plug in the unit, and try to play a disc (some say that works). Once I get it working again though, I'm promptly going to sell it on my own and buy a better quality machine, probably from Sony)

Great video quality (when it works)

Weakness:

DVD read problem, noisy

I purchased my Proscan PSVR87 DVD player in early December 2000. On January 20th it started having problems reading DVDs. Now just about every time I try to play it, I have to power it on and off and open/close the tray several times before it recognizes the DVD. Sometimes it turns itself off in mid-play. I've tried both wet and dry DVD laser cleaners, but no change. Now I see that several other people are having the same problem. I'm donating my player to the trash and buying a Sony.
