The PROSCAN PS8680 is an excellent bargain, and it may be getting passed by because of DIVX. It's like not buying a car because you don't use the ashtray. What a great unit! Awesome sound, picture. Great value at 249.00. This unit was over 500.00 early in the year.

Strength:

Great picture. Great sound. Great price!

Weakness:

None that I know of.

I read all the reviews here first, and was a little put off about being able to hear the disc spinning in the player. But for $249.00 I had to take a chance. No sound of the disc spinning at all! Great picture. Great sound. I couldnt be more pleased! I couldnt believe the price either. You are not just getting a 250.00 player, you are getting a $500 or $600 player for 250.00! I highly recommend it!

I agree with everything that's been said about the easy to use menus and the remote's not bad... although all those tiny buttons can drive you craze in a poorly lit or darkened room.
However, I had two of these units and had to take them both back! I've never seen so many digital artifacts. Not even on a bottom of the line "el cheapo" player. All the wavy vertical and horizontal lines really drove me crazy too. At first I thought it was RFI (Radio Frequency Interference), but I couldn't find a set of cables to put an end to it. I'm not using the most expensive around, but the Monster and Audioquest video cables I've got are decent cables.

The lines wouldn't go away even when I turned off and disconnected every piece of electronics in my system but the player and TV. I even shut off my computer in the next room and disconnected my wireless phone just in case. Nothing I did would work. I took the first one back and the shop exchanged it for another one. That one too was horrible.

I suppose it could be my specific installation or environment, but the Sone DVP-S550D I ended up with works fine... and doesn't have all those anoying problems. Maybe it's just a bad batch of 8680Z's... but I'll never buy another piece from ProScan.

I have to say that I am very happy with my choice. I wanted to match all my components (sony), yet I could not because Sony is not DIVX compatible. I do not care about DIVX, but I would have been pissed at myself if DIVX ends up surprising everyone and sticks around. I heard that Blockbuster Video and a few others have purchased stock in DIVX, so we will probably be seeing them in the stores, rather than just Circuit City. I also agree with the remote's lightening job? what is that all about; 4-8 buttons light up. I have my DVD player ontop of my Sony STRDE-925, and have noticed a heat problem, I think that it is coming from the DVD, but I may be wrong.
As from a Video aspect: Awesome... I have it hooked via S-video directly to my V-scan Trinitron (Sony). The picture is unbelieveable. I feel that I can reach out and grab someone.

Audio: My receiver is both DD, and DTS built-in. I can not believe that there is that much of a difference between my old Dolby Pro Logic to the DD, DTS. I was watching my first DVD (Hard Rain) and could have swore that it was raining outside. Each DVD is getting better and better to my ears, I have beeen noticing more DD effects.

My speakers are not the best and I still am orverwhelmed.

Strength:

Everything, while it still works

Weakness:

Short lifespan

I bought this player in March of 1999, and it's already on the fritz. Has trouble reading DVDs, skips, freezes up. Still reads regular CDs fine, which is somewhat baffling. Have used a laser lens cleaner on it to no avail. Proscan will not fix because warranty is only for one year. They offered to send me a refurbished model for $170 if I send in the broken player. I told them that if they didn't stand by their original product then I wouldn't buy any other products from them. They gave me a number for a local authorized repair service -- maybe I will have them clean it if they charge a reasonable price. Otherwise, I will be forced to buy a new player after less than two years of infrequent use.

Strength:

Anamorphic Downconversion
Gold RCA jacks
Composite outputs
Digital/DTS output
Monster cables

Weakness:

Audible pop when changing titles/chapters
Does not take scratched disks well
DIVX label
Not so well laid out remote

First DVD player bought. Looks great, sounds great.
Compared to friends sony d330 and it does the same with dvds, less some minor features (eg. zoom etc)

Played 7 movies so far, and its worked perfectly.
No lip sync problems, layer change glitches, down conversion looks good too.

Not enough equipment to test the digital/dts audio yet.

Note the pros/cons above. If you can live with the cons (very minor), its a great lil player to get into the digital medium with.
Its a steal at $189 from Circuit City, while they are clearing it out! Incl 5 free dvd and netflix rentals.

Strength:

1) great video and audio playback
2) nice looking and user friendly remote
3) gold coax outputs for video and audio
4) GREAT price
5) execellent value for the money
6) compact size for a dvd player

Weakness:

1) Motorize tray is noisy during playback or fast forwarding or rewinding disc
2) has divx logo on front

The Proscan PS8680Z bottom line is a great dvd player due to the fact that it has strong audio and video capabilities for a low price. I purchased this unit for $180 at Circuit City and I must say that I am absolutely amazed with this player. Video signals are clear, crisp and sharp. Audio signals are also clear, distinctive, and good. For the money this has to be one of the best buys I have ever made. Other people have made negative comments about the noisy drive and the remote. To be honest with everyone it whirs a bit, but it is not that bad at all. Also quite frankly, I love the remote. My dad has a RCA direct TV system and it's a modified version of an RCA universal remote so the learning curve for me was little to none. I think the remote is pretty nice considering other remotes I have seen. I think that the negative comments against this machine are very finicky comments. The only real disadvantage to this player is that it does not play cd-r audio discs. Since I have a burner that kinda sux but I have a mini theater system designated for that purpose so it's really not an issue for me. The bottom line is people buy dvd players to PLAY dvds. This player has excellent playback abilities and an excellent picture and for the price you can't go wrong. Since these units did come out when Divx was introduced they are now discontinued. If you can find one on the shelves buy it b/c no more are being made. I encourage everyone from novices in the field to audiophiles to take a good look at this dvd player.
