Strength:

Great Picture,Good Price

Weakness:

On Screen Menu

My first DVD player got it for $218.00 +5 free movies and 13 rentals from BlockBuster ,brings the cost of buying to less than $100.00,on screen menu could use a little improvment for ease of use, otherwise a nice player for the price for a modest mid-fi system.

Picture and Sound

I have been looking to buy a DVD Player for the last year. I have been reviewing many models. I never even look at this one. Me and my wife were going to buy of after the first of the year. (Thats what I thought) My wife with knowing nothing about DVD went out and buy me the RCA RC5220P. I was glad she did. I also have read all the problems with other player and I was to say very very happy with what my wife bought. The picture and sound are great and the price was unbeatable. We no longer rent Video for our VCR and now only get DVDs. Now I just need to talk her in to a Bigger TV and Sound System. I would buy this product anytime. Great buy.

I bought this dvd as a backup for for main player(panasonic 110)which has been under repair for a month(it did work perfectly for 9 months). I got it for 199.00 and felt for the price it was a good value. I've only had it 4 days, but so far it seems reasonably good. I was surprised that the chapters do not appear on the display unless you call up the info header and the it goes back to elapsed time only-which is pretty useless. Otherwise this has features that i haven't seen in any of 2 previous dvd players i've used. Being able to program the order of the disc is a great feature, especially on music dvds. Overall for under $200 it is a great entry level or backup player

Strength:

so far, no problems. player is aging well.

Weakness:

no cd-r or cd-rw support. not a lot of bells or whistles.

Overall good product. Wish I would have waited a few more months to buy. Shortly after I bought this one, it seemed it was already extremely outdated.

Strength:

Picture Quality, Optical Output and S-Video Output

Weakness:

Remote poorly laid out

I have used this DVD player for 1.5 years and never had a problem with it. It played all my DVD's as well as lot's of BlockBuster's scratched up DVD's without a hitch! Picture quality via the s-video was great and It's optical audio out feed my Yamaha RXV-3000 receiver flawlessly. I just sold it to a friend because I upgraded to a unit that will do DVD-Audio.

Strength:

Plays DVD's good price decodes Dolby-Digital & DTS

Weakness:

No component output, controller died

Bought this in Dec. 1999 It's pretty good. For the video output I've used super video (great picture), and a optical out for sound (great sound). I have only one real complaint the remote died within 4 months, and it's not the batteries, I replaced them... a few times. I plan on replacing it soon, with something that's 5 disc with component output and can play cd-r. But, I assure you, I will not be throwing it away! If you find this DVD player for cheap and you want a DVD player, but don't want to spend too much you can't go wrong with this one.

Weakness:

unstable

I used this unit maybe 20 times over the past 9 months or so with many failures, usually No Disc, Or Incompatible Disc Messages. Now It Displays the Incompatible message consistantly regardless of the DVD used. None of the key sequence suggestions seem to help. Even the Cleaning discs are Incompatible it seems. I thought DVD players were kind of in the same catagory as VCRs and clock radios in the fact that you buy it, use it, and barring any abuse it would work for at least a couple years. After that you dont repair it you just buy another. Was I wrong?

Weakness:

Doesn't work

DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!!!
They keep failing and Thomson keeps replacing them. The first three units quit working after about a month of light use. Unit #4 failed after the first day... and I haven't even mailed back #3 yet! Keep getting a "No Disk" error. No luck with hard reset or soft reset. Wasted $20 on a disk cleaner that it won't even read.
After the third unit went belly up I wrote to their review board and asked for a refund. Request denied. They can only replace, not refund, they say.
I'm going to buy another brand, and in the meantime will keep replacing the RC5220P as long as Thomson allows. At least that will deplete the inventory of this crummy model.

Strength:

Price, ease of use.(My 5 year old can use it!)

Weakness:

Not reading disks.

I bought this last december. For the first few months, it worked flawlessly. The sound is great, the picture is fine. The only problem is that after about 3 months of use (casual use), you put in a dvd and it will not scan it. No disk found or "This disc is not compatable with this player. Please insert another disk." My first thought was that the dvd was too scratched (it was a previously viewed). But I have a dvd-rom in my computer and it scanned it right away. So, I went to the owners manual. There are key sequences to press but these do not help (I don't have enough fingers to push all those buttons) so I called the "tech support". They gave me the same button sequence to push and I informed the customer rep that I had already tried that. So he suggested unplugging the unit. That seems to help some, but if you are like me, you don't like having wires poking out and the power cord is one of the wires that I like to tuck away. I have resorted to unplugging the unit until I want to watch a movie. So, I thought about doing the "1 year warrenty" thing. They want to charge me $90.00 (half of the purchase price!!!!!!) JUST FOR THE LABOR and they will send me a "replacment unit". How do I know that this unit will not have the same problem. So, I have decided to save my $90.00 and put it twords the purchase of anything BUT RCA

Strength:

Value and solid performance

Weakness:

No CDR support.

I've used this player for almost 3 years now. I have played/watched probably around 500 movies. I have never had 1 problem. No skips, screen freezes, or any of the other problems everyone else here is complaining about. I have never seen it not recognize a DVD. I also use the player as my CD player, and I listen to music all the time. I have used the crap out of this thing and it is still going strong. Great product!
