Strength:

Good DVD player for beginners.

I got this player as a promotional bonus from a audio/video website when I bought a surround sound system. Overall, a good DVD player even if I had to pay $220 for it. I haven't encountered any disc playback problems and everything works as advertised. Since this is my first DVD player, I don't have anything really to complain about. I don't see it missing any features, especially for a beginner like myself.

Strength:

Cheap

Weakness:

It's cheap and has manufacturing defects. Poor customer service.

Purchased in May as a gift for my father. Worked fine until he couldn't play some of the hybrid discs (most notably The Matrix). Called the 800 number and was told to phone back in 14 days. Did so and was told could take the player for repair in either Columbia, MO or Little Rock, AR both over 150 miles. Said to the CSR, "Those are both over 150 miles away, that's a little far to drive to get it fixed isn't it." CSR responded with, "I guess you could walk." and then hung up. Do not buy a Samsung. Save yourself time and effort by paying a little more for a Panasonic, Sony, Toshiba, or a myrid of other players. Samsung is a plague and should be avoided.

Strength:

Inexpensive, great remote

Weakness:

only supports coaxil digital out

I just got mine(I made sure that the patch had been applied). It works great! I did notice one very slight skip in 'The Matrix' but I can live with it. Considering 'The Matrix' is considered to be a DVD player killer- it performed outstanding! I have no problem playing CD's, even one's that aren't as clean as they should be. The joystick remote is very easy to use. My only problem was with the coaxil digital out, my receiver didn't have it. It works fine with the RCA outs, but I'm upgrading my receiver to use the coaxil digital.

I purchased this machine at a local K-Mart. I used a s-vhs connection for video.I used its analog audio outputs into my DPL receiver. The color quality was very good. I did find watching the picture annoying. I then noticed that the color red was annoyingly noisy, something I have not scene from other players. The analog audio quality had no sound quality in comparison to other players even though those players were nothing to crow about in this realm. I expected Samsung to do better than this since they want to be a major player in the DVD market.

Strength:

picture quality, good CD sound from analog outputs, built in volume control, cool hacks

Weakness:

picky about what kind of CD-R's it will play. no component video out, but my TV doesn't have that input anyway.

I have used this player for DVDs and CDs alike. I have never had a skipping or any other problem viewing any movies. The built-in volume control is a big plus because I have it hooked up directly to a component amplifier when playing CDs. Although it is picky about what brand of CD-Rs it will play, I've found one kind that works perfectly (blue colored memorex). This was a refurbished model that I got from egghead auctions for only $120 shipped. GREAT buy!

Strength:

Redeemable? Inexpensive. Multi-region hackable.

Weakness:

Skips. Samsung shouldn't produce it without case ventilation.

Was I ever pissed that I bought a hunk of junk for my first DVD player. It skipped almost constantly on any DVD that I got from the library. Then I started reading about all the other people who have the same experience.

But...

I read the 709 online page from the UK and gleaned some info that has worked for me.

First off, I am convinced that most of the skipping is due to the processor being too hot. I took the cover off of mine and found absolutely no vent holes were provided.

Secondly, what I thought were good discs from the library (due to small scratches and smudges) were actually too much for the player to read through. My first brand new DVD played flawlessly after I took off the cover. I guess that what scratches are OK on a CD are not for a DVD due to the amount of information packed on the disc.

I plan on drilling holes in the cover and maybe adding a small PC fan to draw out the heat. I paid only $117 from Sears on this refurbished unit and want to keep it as long as I can get it to work consistantly.

Strength:

multivoltage, multiregion, macrovision bye bye, decent pic

Weakness:

a real hot mama

my rebel self says more, more more!

it does all they promise on the websites. and if you pay 4 seconds of attention to the heat problem, either by running in a cool room, or popping the top, or installing a pc fan in a cut hole, or just drilling the top full of vent holes, 99 percent of the problems are history. it is not alone, the apex 600 shares the same lack of factory concern for heat dissipation.

it is not the most robust player for viewing dvd's that, how should I say it, ahem, are not from the original producer, but when it does play, it does very well.

and for $135, it is a rebel with a cause. recommended, if you can still find one.
