From the look of the reviews so far, and based on my own experience, it appears that Samsung has some manufacturing quality problems. My 709 is working great! The only time I have had any problems was this past weekend on some rented DVD's. I put one in and about half way it started stuttering. I took the disc out and low and behold it was covered in fingerprints and dust. I was more careful after that one, but a quick cleaning and never a problem again. I notice a slight hickup at the layer change (Can't they put enough ram in these things to buffer that? Maybe not for $200) but never anywhere else. Sound quality is good, but volume level drops a lot when using the built-in 3d surround emulation. Using a LCD Projector to make a large screen I found the image quality to be very good so I have no problem with my purchase. It certainly seems to play Dual Layer discs fine for me. For the money, it's a keeper.

Everything was working so well, the remote had many usefull features, breezed through Video Essentials, but...It will not play all dual layer disks. It froze on "Contact" and eventually rejected the disk. If you have one of these, return it asap. There is no fix.

Bought one and sure enough, it skips through contact.Got another copy of contact and it plays it fine.My sphere dual layer plays fine too. What gives? Should I return this? Why would it skip on one copy of contact and not the other?Could it be the dvds are at fault and the 709 is just not forgiving on some things? Help!!!!!

Got a 709 without doing any homework, and sure enough, it started hiccupping when playing a dual-layer disk. It's a shame because I was happy with everything else. Returned it to Best Buy a week later, and interestingly, this player is on sale for $199 -- when I bought it, it was going for $249.

I've had a 709 for a couple of months now and have had no significant problems with it. On dual-layer disks the layer change takes a split second -- i.e., it's noticeable, but liveable with. The picture is fine and I've got the player's digital output to work with a spare input on the back of my DAC, so the sound is way better than using the analogue outputs. I'm sure the Samsung 709 isn't the only DVD player that can do this, though.
DISCLAIMER. If you try this, it's entirely at your own risk. What works on my setup may not work on yours. I'm no expert at connecting digital equipment together, so please be careful if you do try it. Get proper advice.

My player was pretty good, only an occasional minor glitch, till last night when I rented The Matrix. It Wouldn't load!. I called Samsung customer service this morning 9-28, and was told they are working on a fix which should be ready in two weeks. Owners of the 709's will get to take their player in to a service center for the fix. If they pull it off and the fix works I will go 5 stars, it's a bargin at the price it's going for. 3 if they can't fix it.

Strength:

Functional for the most part.

Weakness:

Doesn't play dual layered DVDs without and EPROM upgrade

I bought my DVD-709 from the Army Air Force Exchange Service. It works fine when you consider the price. It will not play dual layered DVDs out of the box and requires an EPROM chip upgrade. You know what that means ... you get to bring or mail it to an authorized repair facility. I found Samsung to be helpful in finding such a facility. I just got my "new" unit back and it works fine.

Considering the unit is made in Korea and is cheap ... it is a good buy. If you want the best --- buy the best. Samsung is not the best.
