Strength:

Slick design, good remote.

Weakness:

mp3 playback

I've only watched two DVD movies so far and the skipping problem was not really a problem. I think I only noticed it a couple of times on one movie. The reason I bought this was actually for it's added features like mp3 playing. Well, I found that it does read mp3 files on my disks (not all of them but I'll get to that in a minute) however, almost every song skips intermittently. I went back to the dealer and he indicated to me that the unit only recognizes one mp3 format..." I think it is MPEG 1" he mentioned. Then I called Samsung Canada tech support. This guy basically said that the compression rate must be the right one. Unfortunately, neither of these jokers really had a handle on what format or compression rate this thing required. Sooooo I spent mucho $$$ and time re-encoding and re-burning my mp3's in various formats - mpeg 1, mpeg 2 and various compression rates - 128, 160, 192,256, etc, and on various brands of CD-R's and CD-RW's. All with the same results - skip, skip, skip. One reviewer in this post mentioned that Sony CD-R's seem to work. I haven't tried them but I'm am not sure that I wanna waste more time and money reburning all of my mp3 collection.
As I mentioned earlier, it does read most of my CD-R's but will show the entire disk contents (mp3's) on only a few of my disks. I've heard that this may be a finalizing issue in that some of my disks may have not been finalized.
Looks like I'll be visiting my dealer with this thing and my receipt tomorrow. Good thing I kept the box it came in.
I am going to look at the Hitachi DV-P505U which apparently has all the same features. If Hitachi's does play mp3's without skipping and does not skip with DVD's (as mentioned in some reviews)...it'll be worth the extra few bucks.

Peace,

Dan

DOES NOT WORK WITHOUT SKIPPING

I bought this before doing any research on it. Big mistake. After buying during lunch, came back to work and checked the reviews (I know, wrong order). Saw all the skipping reports and said "They must have been lemons and the brand spankin new one I have in the crisp, sealed box out in my car will be different".

W R O N G !!! Save your self the trouble. move on, research another, Save yourselves......

Strength:

Good picture, zoom feature

Weakness:

Don't waste your time. Do I sound like a broken record... SKIPPING

Review for Samsung DVD511. I returned it within 3 weeks.
This DVD player skipped whole portions of a movie. I could only see what I missed during the rewind.
Brand new DVD of the Soprano's did ok w/ only minor skipping but anything rented at blockbluster did not work properly. There would be 5 to 10 minutes of a movie that it would refuse to play.

Skips, Stalls, Failing to recoginze disk!! Huh? This thing is supposed to play these things right!!

Got it for Christmas 2000. Opened early...mid dec. Played two purchased movies with only 1 or 2 pauses/mistakes per movie. (Not terribly impressed at this point)

Rented Gone in 60 Seconds and X-men. this past weekend. Player paused, stopped, and failed to recogize disk several times, even after disk was cleaned. DVD's seem to be much more picky compared to CD's. Also experieced lip sinc problems where voice and vidio ended up more than 1 second off. Try watching the FBI credits at the begining more than a dozen times. I almost took the player out into the back yard and shot it I was so pissed.

Better common sence prevailed and I returned it to Best Buy where I waiting in line for a F*&%_ing hour to get my $$ back. I almost phoned in for a pizza it took so damn long.

Returned to Blockbuster and traded DVD's for VHS cassettes... Watched VHS cassettes with no problem...Technology should work before it is sold. To date, DVD has been far from the "Perfect" it is touted to be. I'm reading reveiws on other players in the $300-$400 range, but still finding problems.

Strength:

Good looking unit, shuttle jog, excellent remote, zoom.

Weakness:

Zoom quality

Got this as a Christmas gift. Using all Monster connections and the unit preforms flawlessly, with the exception of the zoom. It works, but a little TOO well! All of the movies I've purchased have played with only a slight hic-up, which is to be expected in some videos; and not every time. Overall pictute quality is great, and I've had no problems either operating DVD or listening to audio CDs. I can't speak to the MP3 aspect, because I'm not into that. But this is one I would recommend for a casual movie watcher. However, I will be returning mine to purchase a Toshiba SD-2300 later this month.

Weakness:

Will not play newer releases of DVD titles, won't recognize MP3 format.

My wifes hard working brother gave us this player for Xmas. We were pretty excited about watching our first flick. The Perfect Storm disc was our first attempt, not knowing anything about DVD's we watched about half the movie then the movie stalled. We thought is was the disc, because another older title played fine. Then we tried The Matrix the same thing happened. We learned real quick that the 711 model will not play overlayed discs with the effects that most single side discs have on them.
Ya can't blame Samsung for trying to offer a pretty neat-o player for not a lot of money. I wish it would've worked. I liked the lay out and the features of the machine. This disc player sure made CD's sound a lot better, actually the price isn't too bad if you just bought it to play music.
When we returned it to Best Buy the kid behind the counter told us they had about 6 or 7 players of this model returned in one day.
Nice try Samsung!

Strength:

I HAVEN'T FOUND ANY GOOD QUALITIES.

Weakness:

IT SKIPS ENTIRE SCENES AND FREEZES UP. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY.

I GOT THIS FOR A CHRISTMAS GIFT FROM MY HUSBAND. SO FAR ALL WE HAVE GOTTEN FROM IT IS STRESS AND AGGRIVATION. IT FREEZES UP AND IT SKIPS (SOMETIMES ENTIRE SCENES AND DURING ONE MOVIE IT SKIPPED THE ENTIRE LAST HALF-HOUR AND WENT STRAIGHT TO THE CREDITS). ON A COUPLE OF OCCASIONS THE SOUND OF THE VOICES DIDN'T MATCH UP WITH THE MOUTH MOVEMENTS. I CAN'T WAIT TO RETURN IT. ALSO, THE REMOTE IS VERY CONFUSING TO USE. IF THIS IS ALL YOU CAN AFFORD...WAIT FOR SOMETHING ELSE.

Weakness:

Skips/jerks in the middle of DVD and tends to distort video on occasion.

The items that caught my eye were price and features. Too bad I did not come to this site before I bought it. The player skips, jerks and the picture distorts in the middle of playing a DVD. This was very disappointing in the middle of Gladiator. I've had VHS players that had better picture quality than this. Wasn't too thrilled with the maze of buttons on the remote and it was not compatible with my TV. I just took the unit back instead of hassling with it. What a first time experience.
