Strength:

Good picture if you have a DVD that plays on it.

Weakness:

Has to have a perfect DVD(rentals mess up constantly). A DVD with lots of info on it won't play either.

All was well with my player except with rentals. Any minor defect causes problems. Then The Matrix came out. Major freeze up. Then several other disks with lots of extras didn't play. I took it back to Best Buy but they had no clue. I lived with it until I called Samsung. They said they would replace the drive and the chip that was causing the problem for free. My player was in the shop for two months. I celebrated by buying Gladiator when I got it back. Oops! It froze up and skipped several times. Save yourself. Avoid Samsung and Best Buy at all costs! You have been warned.

Just got one at BB for $340. The picture quality is outstanding and the sound is crisp and full. For the this price range, the built in DD decoder is a great value. I paired mine up with the NAK AV-500, and am totally pleased with the results when playing 5.1 dvds. Try the Zorro dvd, it will blow you away!

Strength:

Dolby Digital 5.1 decoder built in, great picture (when it plays right)

Weakness:

Major data decoding and playback problems on dual-layered DVDs!!!

Very excited about this machine when I first got it, but right from the start it had playback problems with many DVDs.

After tolerating it for about 18 months, I sent it out to get checked . . . Apparently Samsung was aware of a problem with it's laser pickups and RAM ICs and that there was a upgrade available. . . WHO KNEW???? Why didn't they notify their customers?

Anyway, after near TEN WEEKS, and the machine still unable to be repaired, I got frustrated and called the manufacturer. They offered to replace the 907 with a DVD-812 . . "Our latest high-end model". I said OK . . "great and thank you very much for at least taking some responsibility for you mistake . . ."

So now I had a DVD-812! and Guess what. . . . Brand New out of the box . . . . and I expereinced the same problems with nearly everyone of my DVDs!!!! Including new discs that were just purchased and played for the first time!

That DVD-812 is now in the shop and waiting for a new Laser pick-up! I've had it just about 4 weeks now!

If it ever comes back in working condition it's probably going to end up on eBay or sold in my local newspaper so I can buy a REAL DVD player!

I'll never recommend SAMSUNG to any one I know . . .
and I work in the Television Commercial and advertising industry!

Strength:

Nice picture, DD built in

Weakness:

Can't play new discs, very buggy firmware

At first, I was very pleased with this player. The dolby digital decoding is excellent. I think the sound quality is top notch. The unit also doubles as a decent cd-player.

But about 6 months after owning it, I was not able to plays some discs at all (Very Bad Things, for example). Some discs (scratch free) skip in spots. Others, such as The Matrix, play but are barely viewable due to skipping (in the best scenes, no less). I don't just see these problems on brand new discs, either. I have tried to play older discs (such as aliens) and certain menus will 'lock up' the unit.

I was promised a firmware upgrade for months by samsung. When it was installed, nothing seemed better. The bugs simply changed. I feel this is due to very shoddy programming. For example, the player gets confused if you hit two buttons 'too quickly'. I don't mean rapid fire. I have to wait about 2-5 seconds between buttons presses to get the unit to recognize them. Audio tracks have changed on me when I hit stop, then play. I have also observed other odd behaviors.

Another problem is that the audio tracking sometimes gets off. If you put a disc in, hit play, then skip to a scene late in the movie, the audio track will sometimes come out of sync with the picture. In order to fix this, I have to stop, wait about 10 seconds, then hit play again.

These problems are slightly picky, but I expect something to work when I pay $350 for it. Overall, I would recommend this unit to nobody. The bugs are inexcusible.

Strength:

VERY clean/sharp picture. Easy to use functions (index, setup, inputs/outputs, etc.) BUILT-IN 5.1 Dolby Digital Decoder w/ amazing AC-3 surround sound!!!

Weakness:

Can't play "The Matrix". No DTS output

I've been in the market for a good DVD player for awhile, looking at and testing just about every DVD player there is. I'm a big "fan" of SAMSUNG and when I saw the 907, I was pretty much spent. I bought it from Best-Buy for $169.99 as an open-boxed item (only missing the manual and box, but who really uses them anyway?!?!) The other DVD I was deciding with was an open-boxed TOSHIBA which was $199.99 and had no built-in decoder. The BB associate tried to get me to buy the TOSHIBA claiming that it was better and that the SAMSUNG had been discontinued because of problems it suffered from. After buying the SAMSUNG-907 and setting it up I was amazed. I just want to kick that BB associate in the head...the picture and 5.1 decoding are truley top-notch. The only problem that I found with it is that it can't play "The Matrix", but who cares. Also, it doesn't have DTS output, but there really isn't very many movies that support this now, and the sound difference between DTS and Dolby Digital is minimal. This DVD player totally kicks and if you're lucky enough to come across one, don't hesitate to buy it, you won't regret it at all.
