Strength:

Picture, Sound, Built-In Menus

Weakness:

none really

I tried all of the above players before taking a chance on this jewel. For a mere $169 retail it kills the panasonics and the toshiba that I tried. Anyone in the market for a dvd player period needs to check this player out. Clear picture, clear sound, great product overall.

Strength:

Great picture and sound, MP3 Playback, outputs

Weakness:

No id3 tag support on MP3's, poor documentation

Very nice DVD player with excellent picture quality. Sounds very nice on my home theatre system (Sony STR-DE445 receiver with Dolby Digital and DTS), and 5.1 JBL speakers.
First DVD I tried was a rental, "Gone in 60 Seconds" - great for testing sound effects and action scenes - no on-screen artifacts and very realistic sound effects overall.

Have tried CD's and MP3's - absolutely no problems and sound reproduction is as good as any CD player I've heard. To the reviewer who was having problems with his MP3's being broken into 5/6 files: try changing the bit-rate - you may have Variable Bit Rate MP3's that are causing the problem - burn at 192 kb/s and you'll be fine.

Just a couple of suggestions for Samsung:
1. Get id3 tag support! - the first 8 characters of the file name is no good when you have multiple songs by the same group on one CD and all you can select is the group name.

2. Improve your instruction manual! Explain the technicalities of the options and why one option may be better than another - don't assume that the buyer knows whether compressed is better than uncompressed.

Strength:

Overall picture quality and sound are good

Weakness:

Remote control joystick, mp3 name display, truncated mp3.

The picture looks crisp and clean w comp video output.
I have no problem with reading DVDs and scratched VCDs.
Audio sounds okay too. Good forward/reverse playback
speed.

Mp3 title displayed on screen is lousy, only a limited
characters displayed. You can't jump to songs ahead
by typing the number of the song - have to scroll
slowly page by page. The remote joystick is a litte
slow to response and awkard. Some song playbacks are
also truncated. No random play as well. It also can't
recognize directories name on CD.

Overall I find the system is pretty decent excluding
the mp3 'feature'.

Strength:

crisp video playback, no errors, mp3 playback (even low quality recordings), looks neato, I like the sdtructure and i think the remote functions rather well, and darn cheap

Weakness:

mp3 playback can't adjust volume on bass,

got it cheap at bestbuy. I just wanted a basic system.
plays mp3's and dvds (about 11 movies with no errors). the zoom sucks (but who uses it) . overall very pleased with product. I have seen many of my friends dvd players and this is jsut as good and if not better then some sonys, panasonics, and eek i won't mentions the oritrons, emersons, ge's , and rca's (i just did-look your gettign what you paid).

Strength:

Crisp video! and the audio is excellent! MP3/VCDs/CDR supprt, Digital output! Dolby Digittal, Nice control (joystick) and interface. Slim case design!

Weakness:

MP3 playback sucks. It does not support long names and most MP3 files are broken into many mini tracks. Also no documentation on MP3 playback on manual but in BIG fonts on the package.

This is an email I sent to Samsung CO.:

Hi,

I will like to have more documentation about MP3 playing since there is none the manual.

I've tried a couple of MP3 CD-Rs and they do not really work properly. I can see that the MP3 player does not support long names (which I find odd, most MP3 files come from computers that support long names).

My first MP3 CD-R was loaded (OK, no long name support) and it is broken into many tracks (1=5 or 6). It starts playing then stops, goes to the second part of track 1, which I find very annoying. Can you send me documentation on this. I cannot begin to understand why Samsung makes a product where it advertises (on package and DVD player display) that is capable of doing something but there are no such instructions, Q/A of such feature.

Does this DVD player have any firmware upgrade capabilities? If so please let me know if you have designed a better MP3 interface and support or if you are planning to (I hope so).

I’ve chosen to buy my electronics from Samsung and recommend it to all my friends and co-works. I hope to hear from you soon.

PS: please reply to ALL my questions.

Thanks in advance!!

Strength:

very stylish and classy made!

Weakness:

the remote control doesnt seem to be that impressive though and sometimes ineffective

i had apex, and samsung model 711 before and they were unbeatable to this m301 dvd player. this is the best i ever had. not only it plays well with my mp3 songs, it functions extremely well with vcds and dvds. i just love this product so much and worth the price i paid for. my friend has a sony dvd player and it costs more than im paying for this samsung, unfortunately, his sony dvd player could not read cdr and cdr-w format. eventually, this samsung m301 does! it is an awesome player!

Strength:

Inexpensive for the features provided

Weakness:

MP3 Menu long filename support is lacking

This trip actaully began with a idea to purchase some A/V wires to play a my main DVD in a different room. When I was told that for the length of wires I needed would cost the same as a new DVD, I had to listen. I was shown the Samsung DVD-M301...

This Samsung has a lot of good features that my first generation JVC BK501 does not. It has VCD playback, CDR, CDRW, and MP3 capabilities. It also has DTS/5.1 coax/digital outputs. The VCD playback works well and is quick to load. The MP3 playback is very nice, but I did not like how the filenames were truncated. I have no comment for the DTS/5.1 since I don't have that setup in the bedroom. The remote control seems to work fine for me, but then again I rarely use it since I carry my Pronto Pro around the house.

For the price, this DVD is great! The picture is sharp and vivid. I could not ask for anything better in a sub $100 DVD.
