Strength:

Great Price,Small foot print, every possible connection and option I would want.

Weakness:

Remote could be better configured but not too bad.

Great value!. I bought it on Buy.com over a special weekend-$150.00,free shipping, no tax and I had a $10.00 coupon for them(bringing it to $140.00). Worked perfectly. Only time it hicupped I had a grease mark on the DVD, cleaned it off and all was fine. Great picture and sound-big improvement over my VCR.

Strength:

Size and price, picture and sound.

Weakness:

Remote layout, unknown long-term reliability.

I've been one of those Laserdisc die-hards. I invested a lot of money in the format and have a sizable Laserdisc collection. I play a Pioneer LD-V8000 on a calibrated Sony 32XBR100, so I'm moderately picky about picture quality.

For a number of reasons, I decided to get into DVD in a small way -- buy the cheapest player that seemed right for the money and rent discs. Many people have reported having trouble with the Sharp DV-600U. Nevertheless, after being very impressed with a friend's well-behaved DV-600U on a 27-inch Toshiba using the component input, I decided to buy one (at Costco, of course, for $180).

So far, so good. It plays The Matrix without a hitch. A rented copy of T2, significantly scratched, skips a couple of times. The thing is, going back-and-forth between the DVD of T2 and the THX Special Edition on LD, the DVD looks significantly better! The lowly, little feather-light $179 Sharp DV-600U has a better picture on S-Video than the tank-like LD-V8000's composite output does going through the legendary 32XBR100's superb 3D digital comb filter.

If (that's IF) the Sharp turns out to be a reliable piece of hardware, I've got to question if there's any point in buying a more expensive DVD player. One thing I'd like to try that the DV-600U is lacking, is black level expansion.

But as it is, those blacks and shades of gray look darn good. It doesn't bother me the DV-600U doesn't pass the blacker-than-black PLUGE, as I have both A Video Standard and Video Essentials on LD.

Please keep comments coming on the humble little DV-600U!

My initial impression was that this was a good player, nice picture, nicesound repro until....
- the first unit I started to notice that there would be 2-5 second pauses
at points throughout DVD play. I tried different disks, I even exchanged
disks thinking that I had some bad pressing. I also noticed a little periodic
sound stutter
Called Sharp, they recommended I return it for a new unit, which I did
immediately from Costco

- this unit initially appeared to be OK then all of a sudden I started getting
some picture freeze, and "stuttering" of the sound output accompanied by
jerky picture movement. Almost as if it went into some kind of skip mode
and it would not stop unless I pressed the Pause then Restart or by pressing
Stop and restarting the movie.

I threw my hands up and returned the unit to Costco for a full refund, then
went out and purchased the Toshiba SD-3109 (to match my bigscreen Color
Stream system!

Product has nice layout of input/output, remote control is small and a little
disorganized (also no button function to turn off subtitles!)

Would not recommend this product, I think there is some kind of manufacture
defect or the technology is not up to par... try again Sharp.

I bought this DVD player at COSCO for only 250dollars. Yes, it's cheap but it has all the neccesary functions, like DTS, AC3, and Component Out(looks NICE), and other things on remote. Also, I record my CDs from the DVD player to minidisc using an optical cable, which is also a nice feature, nice recordings. This unit is very small, compared to any other DVD player, which fits nicely next to the N64 in my TV stand.
The post below is wrong, you can change the subtitles on/off and to other languages on the remote. But, I did have to same problem with the sound skipping. I had sound skipping and terrible framerates for awhile. I took the disc out, and saw that it had some finger prints on it. Cleaned it up, and it was fine. Maybe it was the disc's fault. I have watched a few other movies, and never had this problem, when watching 2hours+ straight. But, if it is a reoccuring problem, I will definitely return, for a more reliable machine.

Seems great for the price! (for now..)

Strength:

Excellent Sound, Trouble-free operation, Very Good picture.

Weakness:

The remote is poorly designed but can be learned.

I have had this DVD player for six months and played about fifty movies on it. The only trouble I've had was from rental DVDs that needed to be cleaned in order to operate well. Trouble-prone discs (Matrix, and such I read about on the newsgroups) have played with no problems. The layer changes can occasionally be noticed but it is a fraction of a second. I would like to read reviews that compare this deck to the Pioneer 525. Except for a noisy tray the 525 sounds like a good player. I recommend the Sharp DV-650.

Strength:

Good picture quality, Size, features

Weakness:

Skips, locks up, slow, remote is awful

This thing is little and has a good picture but like everone else here I agree that the remote is awful. This player is also very slow about loading and the biggest problem is that it freezes pretty regularly, and you have to stopp it and then press play agin.

Strength:

It was very inexpensive at Costco. It was the first DVD player I bought.

Weakness:

It is very sensitive to dirt on a disc. I must make certain that a disc is clean or else it will skip. The remote is horrible. You must guess which audio selection is the right one.

Overall, it was worth the money. It will eventually move it to a television elsewhere in the house, and I will spend a little more on a solid one for my home theater set-up.

Strength:

Compact Shape, Price

Weakness:

Remote control's arrows buttons make it difficult to navigate DVD menus. DVD skips from time to time.

This seems to be a good entry level DVD player. Like I said above I am frustrated trying to navigate through menus because of the remote control design. Also on probably one movie in 5 the player will skip but hitting the fast forward or rewind buttons on the remote will correct the problem.

I bought it for movies, and it is good enough for that based on the cheap 25" TV that I own, but it does leave something to be desired in the sound department. Any CD Played on my Yamaha CD player (and Yamaha App) sounds significantly better than in the Sharp. But for the price I payed ($175) I have no complaintes. If this were a $400 or $500 unit then we would have issues.

THE WHOLE UNIT!!!

Well let me start off by saying that this unit is a waste of money. This was my first dvd player and i didn't want to spend a lot of money on it so I saw this one on a home shopping network for $200. I had it hooked up to a Kenwood VR309 receiver. In the five months I have had it I probably only used it to watch 30 dvds. But right off the get go I noticed that when it got hot the disc would freeze. Then I would have to press forward on it for it to move. Even doing this would not always fix the problem. Eventually, the freezing started to happen quicker and quicker. Also, sometimes I could not get a dvd to play(The Abyss). Then finally last week i was only able to get audio from cds. The dvd would play but no volume would come out of my speakers. So i sent my receiver to be fixed. The repair shop told me I had the settings wrong. I couldnt see how but I brought it home and rehooked it all up. I still got no sound. So i got annoyed and went to the store and bought a sony dvp-s360 just to see if it would make a difference. And sure enough i got full audio out of my home theatre unit. So in conclusion PLEASE do not buy this unit. I know the price is cheap but its not worth it. I now have to send mine back to sharp at my own expense. Just so they can give me back a piece of junk!!!!

Strength:

Small size. Simple.

Weakness:

Does not transmit closed Captions. Fussy about dirty/scratched disks.

Bought at Costco for ~$189 or so. We really like the small
size. But over time we have discovered it is fussy about
discs we rent -- these discs fairly frequently hiccup and
pause, especially toward the end. Sometimes we can fix the problem by removing and reinserting the disk, but a few times we've had to give up. However, we never have problems with discs we have purchased -- I guess because they are cleaner and less likely to be scratched.

We discovered recently (by reading the manual for the player) that the DVD player does not transmit
closed captions. It does transmit subtitles available through the DVD menu. But we are now looking for a more forgiving player that supports closed captions.
