Strength:

audio, video, great CD player, component video outs, good looking unit

Weakness:

none so far

Wow, this is a great DVD player. When hooked up to my Yamaha htr-5240, the audio absolutely blew me away. DTS is great! The video is good as well but it is currently hooked up through RCA cables to a small tv but it is still better than VHS. I cant wait to use the component outs when I get a new TV(hopefully a 27" Wega). A friend of mine has his player(same model) hooked up via component video and it is stunning. T2:UE sounds and looks fantastic. I would recommend this player to anyone looking for an inexpensive player that is damn good. I would also recommend supremevideo.com. Great prices, delivered on time, double boxed. 5 stars!

Strength:

Plays 5 DVD/CD's, nice on-screen displays, good anamorphic downconversion, good price

Weakness:

No zoom, interface is a little slow (disc explorer)

This unit replaced my 1st-gen Sony DVP-S3000 (which still plays great but lacks DTS output). I am really impressed with this DVD player so far - great features, decent price, and expected Sony quality. At first, I tried the Toshiba 2-disc unit, but I just can't stand the jaggie downconversion the Toshiba's exhibit. The Sony's are a little softer in image quality, but no jaggies and still a great picture.

Strength:

Can sit and watch 10 hours without having to get up. Many features.

Weakness:

Doesn't play some of my Napster copied cd's, so I needed to get another separate CD player. Makes some noise when playing (spinning noise)

I paid 300 with a 50 dollar off coupon at Best Buy and got the service plan. That's the only reason I got it there is because if anything happens I can take it back and get a new one. It plays and sounds better than my old Phillips, but is loud when out in the open. Before I got an enclosed entertainment center I had to put a pillow and blanket over it to shut it up. Now it's inclosed in the glass and I haven't had any problems yet.

Great video quality,smooth changer

I purchased this product after buying the Onkyo dvd600, which was a total piece of junk. Briefly, I returned the O nkyo product back 3 different times and had to fight with Circuit Citys home office and repair dept to return it for just store credit, which in the end they gave me a 100$ store credit for my troubles. The Sony 660 was the best player for the money, simply for these reasons: superior picture, ease of operation, smoother operation of all primary functions, dependability, and price. I am not into the cd burning crowd so this product fits my needs in the area and I have a Marantz sr7000 that has built in DTS and Dolby Digital, I also us my reciever for the Digital Audio out rather than use the DVD player. If you are looking for a DVD player that is top quality, you can not beat the 660 for the price.

Strength:

Very easy to set up and use. The 5-disc changer is a great convenience. I watch/listen to musical DVDs like most listen to CDs so being able to change discs is a big plus. Remote worked well with my Sony TV for audio but I wish it could change channels as well.

Weakness:

A little noisy during DVD play. I hadn't tested a CD. Doesn't play CD-R format but I have no need for this feature. Could use a shuttle/jog on the remote. The rew/forward scan is not intuitive. The feature that let's you add text information to the DVD is a little clumsy to use. It's a bthersome thing to do anyway but if the player doesn't read the text on the DVD or the text doesn't exist, it's very useful to add this information so you know which disc is where. A shuttle/jog control on the remote would hae helped this operation. Just a minor inconvenience but the remote should allow the user to do an initial load of the disc information. Currently this control is only on the unit. It is a big unit but surprisingly light. You would definitely want to measure your cabinet before bringing this unit home.

I wound up returning the unit because of the high-pitched whine/fluttering sound during DVD play. I would have exchanged it for the same model had I not read from this site others expressing the same problem from their units. I tried to compare the unit's noise to others set up in the store but there was too much ambient noise to make a comparison. At home the noise was very noticeable in quiet passages as in Disney's "Fantasia". But note, the DVD player sat in an open cabinet that had no glass doors or way of containing the noise. Also, while I consider myself slightly hard of hearing in the normal conversational frequency range, I hear exceptionally well in the upper frequency range and I can hear the high-pitch whine of electrical appliances like light fixtures very easily. My wife could just barely hear the DVD noise. I figured what's the use of having a DVD player delivering great sound if I'm annoyed at the operational noise? So, I'm looking for a quieter model.

Other than this problem I really liked the unit as I have liked most of Sony's products.

Weakness:

None found so far!

I thought I would add my five cents worth to the list of reviews. As a matter of fact, it was this very website that peaked my interest in Sony's C660 unit. This is only my second multi-disk player, but comparing this unit to my old Panasonic C220 is like night and day. To be fair to the Panasonic, let's face it, electronic technology is advancing daily so a lot has happend in the DVD industry in two years. When I went out to by a DVD player for the first time two years ago, I had decided on a Panasonic unit because of my personal experience with their excellent VHS Hi-Fi sterio tape players. Not so for the DVD player I purchased. I can only say that it operation was inconsistent and of late unreliable. When I decided to buy the Sony C660 I did so also because of it's multi-disk capabilities which is important to me (more from a CD perspective than a DVD one). I went to Circuit City where I had already purchased the majority of my home theater equipment. I entered the store's "Sound Room" and what do you know, there was the DVD660 connected to the same Onkyo AV unit I currently own. Also hooked up was the new Panasonic multi-disk DVD player. It was like someone knew I was coming! I asked the salesperson to play a DVD in the Sony unit first. The picture and sound were great. The unit's mechanical operation was relatively quiet (I'm not into paying $1500 for a DVD player just because the drawer opens and closes quietly). What I liked most about the Sony was the number of features it contained for the price. On-screen displays were logically layed out, easy to read and to program. The speed of the unit is also quite noticeable especially when compared to my old C220. Transition from one layer to the next is barely detectible. The crispness and clarity of the picture and sound were also very good (much better than my Panasonic). The overall size of the unit, especially the height, was a pleasant surprise as most multi-disk units tend to be rather high because of the drawer placement. Sony designers, as usual, used their heads and integrated the electronic display on the drawer front. Thus reducing the hight of the unit by at least and inch or more. I liked the C660 so much that I didn't even ask the salesperson to demo the Panasonic unit. The only draw-back to the 660 in my estimation is that the remote hand held unit does not illuminate (a minor inconvenience from my perspective). If I were to sum it up I would have to say the price is right, the features are many, and the sound an picture quality are first rate for a DVD player in this price range.

Strength:

Ease of use, cassette mechanism

Weakness:

Won't play cdr's

While I really like the Sony for picture quality, the sound of this player leaves a lot to be desired and believe me, I can't get cdr's to play and have tried different brands and using converted .wave files. I have an HP 9350 cdrw, have used both Imation and Maxells with no positive results. Additionally, the sound is very weak when compared with my Sony VHS HiFi player (new)...maybe I need to use the digital port since evidently, the analog leaves a lot to be desired. An avid Sony follower, I am disappointed in this player and Sony's disgust trying to prevent playing recorded media...sony, it won't work. I plan on selling my unit on eBay the first chance I get.

5 Disc Capabilities, disk swapping, overall design is attractive.

Weakness:

Won't play CD-R/RW's and that's a major deal to me! Noisy disc swapping.

I was so terribly dissapointed to get home and find that this thing doesn't play CD-R's. That immediately put my plans to make this my new CD changer replacement OUT THE WINDOW. I can't believe that SONY would fail to address such a common desire in the consumer market. Selling this baby on E-bay right now so I can replace it with a Pioneer DV-C36. It's about $100 more expensive, but it plays everything, is in their Elite line, and I think I'll be much happier with it. If you don't want to spend the extra money, buy the AIWA DV370, at least then you get MP3 decoder included for less money than this Sony. In one word: bummed.

Strength:

Optical output connected to good amplifier gives great 5.1 (cinema-like) surround sound.

Weakness:

Some annoying details in the menus but nothing major. Had problems with some CD-R, found a fix though, (no need to reburn all my discs or to change brand).

If you've been having problems reading CD-Rs, this should please you. I believe the problems were due to the calibration of the laser. The following procedure enabled me to read CD-Rs in my machine.

By pressing (one after the other) "title", "clear" and the "power" button while dvd player is in standby mode will bring you to a hidden menu (make sure your TV is on!). Select option 1 from the TEST MODE MENU (Drive auto adjustment). From the next submenu choose option 4 (SACD). The tray will open allowing you to put in a CD-R into the player. Follow the on-screen instructions, the first steps are fast but after a while, it checks jitters and that takes forever, hitting "return" then will stop the process. In my case, eventhough I aborted the operation, after I exited the hidden menu, I was once again able to read CD-Rs.
