Strength:

EVERYTHING

Weakness:

Don't have time for short coming. Guess I don't expect perfection.

There's obviously kids knocking this fine piece of equipment on this site. I had this thing hooked up, 60 DVD's titled, filed in folder in less then 3 hours flat, and watching my first movie! This from a high school drop out! Now, what's the problem? You read much? I have a little to learn, but am very confident I'll know this thing inside and out within another week or so of casual use. NOTHING PERFECT! GET USE TO IT!! Anybody who talks down this unit, likely doesn't have anything good to say about anything, EVER! Sure, it's not the fastest piece in the world, but I'm very sure it will beat you getting up, finding the disc and then loading it. GET REAL! People are giving this one star for being slow?!!!! No more jewel cases laying all over the place, miss placing them, scratching them or getting lint and dust on them. If you got a lemon, complain to Sony! Tell them you'll post bad comments on the web, whatever. Take it back! DEMAND A REPLACEMENT! USE your mouth, not your fingers! Just because some underpaid warehouse worker is throwing these around doesn't mean it's a bad design. Don't blame Sony, blame the middle man! This thing sounds GREAT, and produces very go quality video at this price. It also is loaded! Even has component video! ENOUGH SAID! BUY IT NOW!

Strength:

Not much, This baby has a 25% degraded video quality from the Sony 650 which is not that great. Labeling stinks.

Weakness:

Most of all the Video Quality is aweful. I have a brand new Pro-710 High def TV and this thing looks miserable. It looks better on S-video than Component.. What gives ?

I consider myself somewhat of a VideoPhile. The problem here is I always want the latest stuff and every time the stuff gets worse. I had a Sony 650 5 disc changer and the picture was Okay.. Some digital crap but all in all okay !

I go an d buy this sucker and the video quality drops 25-40 %.. The only way to see this is to hook them both up and A/B.. You would not believe the difference.. Oh my god, it's day and night.. The problem is , I dont think the 650 was so good.. I am going tomorrow and buying a Pioneer just to see the difference.. I just bought a Pro-710 HD from Pioneer elite and I cant show it off due to my DVD..

Buy something else.. Sony did not put the time into this 900 monster..

Weakness:

Unit died right out of the box after plugin.

I puchased the DVP-CX850D new from Sony direct, as soon as i pluged it up I recieved a c:1300 error, I though it was the dvd, but I found out that with every other disk i recieved the error. Once I loaded the unit with 50 DVD 's the rotation made a loud lawn mower sound, the disks sounded like they we grinding. Sony direct would not replace the unit, or give a refund, they are currently repairing it. GO FIGURE.?

You can't put the Sony engineers in it and push it over Niagra Falls.

This is as much a review of the Pioneer DV-F727 as it is the Sony. The reason I'm posting this here is because many people looking at buying a DVD/CD megachanger will come here because the Sony is the most well known unit, not realizing that the Pioneer even exists. Especially since the Pioneer just hit the market. Anyway, here is the same review that I left at the Pioneer section: I purchased a Sony 850D for my wife for Christmas. The reasoning was to get a unit that played DVD, while allowing us to get all of our CD jewel boxes off of the living room floor. Well, the Sony was a major disappoinment. The filing system on the Sony was very
limiting, making it nearly impossible to use with audio CDs. In fact, we had just about decided to purchase another Sony megachanger (CD only) to handle our CD collection. Then I found this little beauty. It's everything the Sony isn't. First of all, it holds 301 discs instead of just 200. The filing system actually makes sense. For instance, you get 10 audio play groups on the Pioneer, rather than the four you get on the Sony. You also can set the Pioneer up to play your "50 best" tracks. While the Pioneer will hold 301 discs, it will keep up to 330 in memory. In other words, say I set up a disc in slot 50. Then I take it out and use it in my car. Later, I put another disc in slot 50 and set it up. Then I bring the original disc back in the house. I have the choice of putting it back in slot 50, or any other slot. It doesn't matter because the Pioneer will remember it no matter where I put it. Makes sense, doesn't it? Well not to Sony apparently. In the 850, if you program a disc into a slot, then take it out it only remembers it if you put in
back in the same slot. And if you put another disc in that slot you lose all of your original indexing. Speaking of indexing, the Sony limits you to 13 characters, total. The Pioneer will allow 12 characters for the artist, and another 12 for the title. You can search and sort by artist name, title or disc number on the Pioneer. On the Sony you only have the "genre" and whatever you program in the text field. As far as programming is concerned, the Pioneer wins there, too. You can program with a keyboard on each unit. But on the Pioneer you can also use a PS/2 mouse to point and click the menu for programming. If you are reduced to using the remote to program a disc, you are still better off with the Pioneer. The Sony's shuttle wheel makes programming with the remote a tedious and annoying task. On the Pioneer it's not
wonderful to program with the remote, but it is better than the Sony. How about memory? The Sony loses ALL of its programming if you disconnect the power at any time. According to Pioneer, you can unplug the 727 for up to 30 days and still keep your programming, although I'm a little scared to try it. Guess I should have tested it before I programmed all of my discs! Oh well, I'll lose power someday
during a thunderstorm and find out then whether it works. The Pioneer will play DVD/CD/CD-R. Also, even though it's not rated to play CD-RW, independent tests have shown them to work. It will also play mini discs, with an adapter. It changes discs faster and quieter than the Sony. It's even smaller, even though it holds 101 more discs! Quality of play? The Pioneer not only matches the Sony, but exceeds it. Too bad I couldn't give the Sony NO STARS!! If you're looking for a megadisk DVD player, the Pioneer DV-F727 is your unit. Forget the Sony 850!!

Strength:

200 Disc capacity, good audio and video quality

Weakness:

Horrid user interface, slow changer mechanism, does not play CD-R/RWs, overall not up to the level of the Pioneer 301 disc changer.

I had one of these before returning it for the Pioneer DV-F727. The user interface is awful, it's slow and very difficult to navigate. The Pioneer was not only a little less expensive, but the interface was much better, and it plays all of my CD-R and RW discs. The video and audio quality is very good on both machines, although I would give the Pioneer an edge due to it's Burr Brown DAC. Sony needs to retool and update their unit in order to compete with the new competition.

THIS IS NOT A SONY REVIEW!!!!
I really wanted to review the Pioneer DV-F727 300+1 changer,
but it is not listed anywhere on this site. Since this Sony is the closest thing to it, I figured that anyone looking for DVD changers would look here.
This changer is awesome!

Weakness:

I'm not a big fan of the Pioneer visual style in general.
The display is very bright, especially the blue light inside of the front door. If you look at the picture on the Pioneer site or the Crutchfield catalogue it doesn't look that strong, but in a dark room right under your tv it's pretty distracting. There is no way to dim it, either.

Judging from the Sony reviews on this page, I would have to say that the Pioneer's disc management system is really great. You can import with front panel, remote, keyboard or mouse. Unlike the Sony you can search through your discs while playing another one.
At first glance this player is more expensive ($1100 list), but The Good Guys, Crutchfield and others are all selling it for $900. Better yet, I went into Costco about two weeks ago and they had it for $650!! (Which the Good Guys were willing to match.) At that price this player completely blows away the Sony from all reviews I've been able to find.
As I understand the manual, this player will output 96khz digital, which apparently most players don't. (Although I'm not sure why anyone would care, although I have seen several posts expessing interest in this feature.)
It plays CD's and DVD's with equal (good) quality. It has also played every CD-R and CD-RW disc I've put in it, inluding one CD-RW disc that my computer's DVD wouldn't even touch.

200 DVDs, Good Picture quality, great unit for holding DVD/CD collection.

Weakness:

Lip Synch Problem (Mission Impossible), limited text for identifying DVD/CD, Disk Explorer interface is not as easy to use as I'd like, very few DVD/CDs have text automatically read so you have to type titles in (not Sony's fault though), friggin' HUGE!!!!!

Overall, I like the product, but it doesn't appear as finished with its Disk Explorer interface...then again, I develop software for a living so I might be pickier than others. It will take quite a while to load all your CDs/DVDs, but that's a one time deal. Also, the manuals about 90 pages and can be a bit trying at times. I did receive great help from the Sony Tech support, so that was impressive.

I was very disappointed with the lip synch issue, but according to a poster on another BB that this is a known issue and Sony will fix it. Specifically, in Mission Impossible, go to the scene where Tom Cruise is in the Car talking with Job about producing the NOC list. Quite obvious 1/2 second synch problem. The link to the BB where this is discussed is:

http://avpros.net/ubb/ubbcgi/forumdisplay.cgi?action=topics&forum=Video&number=2&DaysPrune=

In a nutshell, the poster said "This is a known flaw with that Sony DVD player. They sent a recall notice to all the techs at the store I work in. I can recall two in the last two weeks that were repaired and the problem was fixed."

If this is true and I can get it fixed, I'd recommend the player...if not, it's too much $$$ to spend for player which doesn't always work!!
