Strength:

Holds 200 discs, great video and sound. I like the remote too which is rare.

Weakness:

The main weakness with this unit is that you can only type up to 16 characters for each disc title. The whole point of a 200 disc changer is to put all your dvd's or cd's in the thing and put the titles in. About 1/3 or more of my dvd's have titles longer than 16 characters. This defeats the purpose of a jukebox changer.

I'll still use my Sony 7000 for main movie watching. I'll just put TV episodes in the changer (Star Trek, X-Files, SouthPark, etc..) I have a big problem with the 16 character limitation. If that doesn't bother you, then this unit is the bomb.

I had this unit for 1 day and if i was able to return it, i would have.
the unit broke 1 cd, and severely scratched 3 dvds.Just picked unit up from sony so i hope it wont ruin anymore discs.
the concept is great to have 200 discs at your finger tips, but not at the cost of damaged discs.
Head this warning and buy soething else.

Strength:

200 DVD's is the big plus here. I knew I had to have a changer, it was a toss up between the 5 (Sony DVP-CX650D) and the 200. I finally opted for the 200 and I will never look back. My current collection is around 50 DVD's and growing.

I have to pretty much agree with Steve on everything he said, so I won't add any more technical details other than I have not noticed any lip sync, video or other problems, the video and audio are absolutely flawless as far as I can tell.

Changing sides or loading a new movie in is not as bad as it sounds, fortunately you just select the disc (or if it's already playing do nothing) and hit open. The carousel spins around and there you are. Sure not QUITE as easy as single player, but how much time do you save by not having to load individual movies, eh?

Overall the 200's couch potato factor has to be higher, because I can load up a movie in seconds, factor that times all my movies and it more than outweighs the minor inconvenience of the 1 or 2 flippers I own and for rentals (just leave slot 1 open).

Weakness:

The interface is klunky. I have the STR-DA555ES and have (had) been hoping to be able to download all of my CD/DVD memo text to the remote so that I don't have to browse with the "DiscExplorer."

So far I have unable to do this, I have a call in to Sony Tech support, but it's looking grim.

Also CDR's are unreadable, I tried a burned VCD with no luck :(

There are a lot of menu functions that could work but don't while playing a CD or watching a DVD, browsing disc titles while listening to a CD would be my major gripe -- you can't do it. Again, the remote thing would be perfect here.

FYI jacket titles that do show up are:
Ghostbusers (jacket & title)
Friday (jacket & title)
So I Married an Axe Murderer (title)

There is also a VCD that you can get for free after registering the product with Sony that will apparently load in the jacket data for Columbia and Sony pictures titles.

I hope that if this can be done, other studios will follow suit or maybe some clever little hacker out there will make some VCD images that I can grab :)

Great for the couch potato in you, connection options are excellent.

Get it for the DVD not the CD playing capabilities because CD-R's aren't playable to my knowledge (didn't work for me).

I'm very unhappy that I can't download titles to my receiver's remote, but this may be some technical problem, and not actually impossible. If it's impossible then knock my rating down a star :)

I'm removing 1 star from 5 for value since it doesn't play CD-R's, and one star from 5 for overall since the disc browser is slow as a dog, I can't browse titles when playing a CD, and because the genre's are so limited *and* have such cheesy pictures to go with them.

I might be willing to give it 5 stars for value if it came *WITHOUT* a DD decoder, who in the heck is going to buy one of these and *NOT* have DD & DTS in their reciever???

Well I'm pretty disappointed with Sony. I just heard back from tech support, and no, it is *NOT* possible to download CD/DVD memo data from this unit.

I'm sorry, but, *WHAT* *THE* *F!&*&* are they thinking? You'd think this player would be a flagship of technology.

I'm more than disappointed, and I'm going to knock my rating down more than a star, because this has got to be just the lamest thing I have ever heard.

The ironic thing about it is that we have to pay who knows how much to get a Dolby Digital decoder with this unit. *WHY*? Come on, who is going to buy this thing and *NOT* have a Dolby Digital Receiver. Makes no sense, *especially* considering that if you want DTS decoding, then the unit itself does not support it, you have to have it in the receiver.

Great unit for convenience. Kinda large. DiscExplorer is decent but slow, and you can't browse discs while playing another CD.

NOT POSSIBLE TO DOWNLOAD CD MEMO DATA.

Strength:

Picture quality is great. I currently own a Sony WEGA XBR 36" television and have to admit that the image is very clear with good color representation. I have not noticed any ghosting, artifacts, or noise in any of my (current) 23 DVD's--This may be due to my television's incredible comb filter but the player deserves a lot of the credit too. Other reviewers stating that the player seems blurry may have an inferior television or need to have their eyes checked. Furthermore, the player has multiple methods to create as soft or sharp a picture as desired and its default is set to a softer "standard". Scanning speeds, still frames, and disc access times are all exceptional and surpass any other players that I tested before buying this one.
Although I am currently building a home theater system (and do not have speakers yet) the player's audio is generally good with no lip sync problems or excess noise. The audio too, can be adjusted through the player if you do not have a receiver with adjustments to suit personal tastes.
Other strengths include the player's aesthetics which are very handsome, the build quality which is exceptional (all buttons on the unit are seated well with good feel and the overall unit is solid), and the amount of I/O's on the back which should suit just about anybody's hookup requirements (except those super-audio addicts who have to complain about everything).

Weakness:

The Disc Explorer GUI is a bit cumbersome at first. My best advice when loading DVD/CD's is to arrange them in order and keep the jewel cases nearby as you load them to facilitate simpler entering of text. That is, this player does not want to recognize CD Text or DVD Jackets (Although it is to my understanding that only the title "Ghostbusters" has DVD-Jacket information at this time). Nevertheless, my Pioneer Car Stereo will recognize CD Text that this DVD player seems to miss. Other bad notes on the Disc Explorer are its inability to scroll quickly through titles, the 16-letter text limit, and the small amount of genre selections (especially for CD's).
Besides the Disc Explorer, the remote control is laid out well and its size is only slightly large than my Sony television's but I would rather have LED lit buttons than the glow in the dark type...afterall, how are the buttons able to get any light to glow if you are watching movies in the dark? The "enter" key in the middle of the jog dial also seems to be fit loose in the remote and sometimes requires multiple presses to affirm a command.
The last weakness is the unit's size...IT'S HUGE!!! I had to completely remove the glass doors and lower the shelf on my current stand to get the thing to fit and breathe.

Although this player has some faults I would recommend it to anybody looking to save some rack space by combining a DVD/Multiple-CD player into one. It's popularity has made this unit very scarce and I had to opt for Crutchfield paying around $800 (not that Crutchfield's service is bad, but they are generally higher than say Onecall, Sound City, or Buying Edge). The player's picture quality, convenience/security of multiple discs, and its audio options make it a pretty good value and will compliment anybody's home theatre. I have to give it a 4 on value due to its high demand making its price fixed and a 4 overall becasue of the weaknesses above.

Strength:

Great sound and video.

Weakness:

Many DVD's store data on both sides which requires you to unload the DVD turn it over and load it back in. Not so bad for a single or platter type changer but a real pain with a Jukebox. Only stores 16 character names. Does not have true custom file, information is stored by slot # not by CD/DVD.

I bought the DVP-CX850 becuase I have 100+ DVD's and 350+ CD's and thus was in the market for a couple CD Jukeboxs. When I read about the DVP-CX850 I decided I'd get the Sony Megachanger and the DVP-CX850. After some thought and use, I decided that the idea oc a CD Jukebox made sense but did not make sense when it came to DVD's. I returned the DVP-CX850 and got a great price on the S7700 and two Pioneer F1007's.

Strength:

It's A Sony!!! 200 DVD/CD The DVD picture quality can't be beat. Easy to program and set up. If your on a budget this is an incredable buy. Universal TV remote is great too.

Weakness:

It doesn't play CDR's

I've owned this unit for about 2 months now and have been able to put it through all of it's paces and it has performed great. I would make the same purchase again in a heart beat if I had to do it over again. Purchase this unit if your looking for a dependable component at great price but don't wait to long because the the newer Sony model just came out so, people will pick these up fast to get the great buy.

Strength:

lit remote. thats about it. seriously.

Weakness:

a lot. first. the display on the actual unit? nonexistent. or mine already broke, which is a sign of poor qc at SONY. the remote f*cking sucks. there is no scroll button to searching through a track. instead, there is a circle that you move left and right to scroll, like most sony a/v products, which sucks because you cant just let go of the button to resume watching/listening, but you have to toggle the circle back to where it was before in order to keep playing at normal speed. and this button is so loose that you cant tell where you had it before.

so this thing just plain sucks. spend your money elsewhere. but if you MUST get a jukebox style dvd/cd player then go for this if you can find it for 20 dollars and under. otherwise, get something of quality. anything else but sony. in case you are wondering, this machine belongs to my parents and they didnt know better. dont worry i didnt waste my money. so going on with how s*itty this thing is, there isnt even a seperate disc/track skip button on the unit. its one button and you have to shift the function. that's sony skimping on a few pieces of plastic and wire. for the money you pay you should AT LEAST get another button. also it does not have play exchange. 5 disc players have play exchange, how come this doesnt? for such an expensive piece of machine, it certainly looks and works like 10 bucks worth. i hate this thing.

Strength:

Cuts down on disc handling and storing issues. Superior video quality. Excellent built-in decoder (if needed)

Weakness:

Slow disc access. Moderately noisy during playback. No backlighting on remote (common Sony problem!)

I originally bought the Pioneer 727 at Costco for $600 but took it back after noticing frame jumping during lateral movement of various scenes of several dvds. The picture on the Pioneer was very sharp but the 4 or 5 jumps per movie got annoying. The Sony on the other hand performs flawlessly both visually and sonically. Sure, the ergonomics are slow between movies, and those of you who are using CDs in it should invest in a $200 changer if you want speedy disc exchange. I've never had any jams or mechanical issues of any kind, but, out of the thousands of players sold, I'm sure some of you have had QC problems. Luckily, I haven't and overall considering the lack of competition (the Marantz player is a Pioneer!)-- I am very pleased with my Sony.

Ok, after over a year of using this beast I still love it! Can’t really understand all the complaints. I have had NO problems using this player, maybe I am used to my sony VCR style of remote.

Complaints about the player picking up DVDtext or pictures: blame the DVD producer for this one DUH… like it’s the players fault for the dics not having the info

I have filled this and am shopping for my next DVD changer. I have had no complaints about finding discs or scrolling. I don’t even use the catagoies for god sakes. One big DVD category and I find every disc fast.

Unpluged the unit and put it in my car with all the discs still loaded and moved it to my new home, no loss of memory or any mechanical problems.

Remote is fine, styled like my 2 sony VCRs but will be picking up a pronto for my system upgrade. Could have used a “force swing back” like the vcrs have.
