Strength:

The storage capacity is nice. Built in Dolby Digital Decoder. Plenty on options

Weakness:

Bulky size. Disc Explorer could use some work.

Over all I like the unit. Contrary to what others say, it may not play CD-R's but it WILL PLAY CD-RW's (simple solution)! I didn't like the fact that, if you are playing a CD or DVD and want to search through the Disc Explorer, it stops the discs from playing

Strength:

Good Video and Audio (when it is not jammed and scratching DVDs).

Weakness:

It jams and scratches my DVDs. Looses titles when you pull out a DVD. This is one remote that I can not program everything (jog wheel) into my learning remote.

I purchaced this unit when it was first released (thus the $799 price). I like to have the latest equipment. I have two Sony ES 200 disc CD changers and really like them with a few exceptions. When the CX850D came out I thought it would compliment my home entertainment system and allow me use my small collection of DVDs and handle my overflow of CDs. Well, since it does not handle CDRs and the interface does not work like my CD changers, I have decided to use this unit for DVD viewing only. I have read the many reviews on this page and see that many units have the same problem as mine does. About half the time I select a new DVD, it mishandles the DVD and spins the carrasel around and drags it across all the DVDs. This has scratched many of my DVDs and ruined a few. Every time this happens I try to stop the unit and power it down. Sometimes it will not stop or shut down. I have not tried unpluging it because it is not easy to reach the plug and I do not want to loose the data. I then have to reach into the unit an extract the jammed DVD while it is still spinning to save the DVD. This is risky and dangerous. My kids like to watch DVDs but I cannot let them use this unit because of this problem. What good is it to have all your DVDs in an easy access changer when it damages DVDs (at $20+ a piece) and half the time I have to get up and fix it? I just as well have a single DVD player. Has anyone taken their units in for repair for this problem? I know there is a Sony sevice center in my area. Sony is not known for their great service. How do you keep the unit from loosing all its data when you unplug it? I give this unit a 1* value rating because I purchaced it new for $799. Seemed like a great deal compared to the $1100 paid for the CX90ES but not really. It gets upgraded to 2* for overall rating because I enjoy watching it when it is not click, click, clicking (cringe) my precious DVDs.

Strength:

Holds 200 Discs, great sound and picture, wife loves it!!

Weakness:

GUI is a little crappy

I read all the reviews on this site about this machine and decided that I had to have one, after finally persuading the wife we bought one at the local electronics store, which was the cheapest around at the time. After getting all my DVD's loaded I started to play with it, it worked great! The GUI is very nasty but I have found a way around that little problem, it's called the Philips Pronto!!!!
Once I had my pronto remote programmed for the Sony it was a dream to use, I havn't had a single problem with it, use the web site www.remotecentral.com to find out about the Pronto, you can program all your disc titles into the pronto and you never have to use the disc explorer again. I have never had a disc get stuck.
Finally as I said before the wife loves it what more can a man want:)
Get a Pronto and you will love you dvd player

Strength:

Picture quality, sound quality, holds 200 DVD.s

Weakness:

huge, not customizable enough

Well this is my second review on this thing, It still is great I think somthing that other people are saying needs to be clarified
WHEN YOU LOAD A NEW DISK YOU DO NOT NEED TO RE-LOAD ALL THE DISKS YOU JUST TURN TO THE DESIRED NEW DISK HIT LOAD AND WHEN IT FINSIHES LOADING THE DISK HIT STOP. If people would try things they wouldn't have any problems. The instructions are a little vague. The remote is annoying. Everything else is great the unit is fast and the picture and sound quality is great. You can update the dvd cover database in the machine sony will send you a vcd for free. You can burn your own list of covers on your computer and the upload them. It is very upgradable more so then any other on the market. Some of the "disk info" available like the preprogramed genras are missing some but all in all it is a great player. I hope that this is the first step with Sony I hope they fix the few things that are wrong and make future players better. I am very happy with this purchase

Strength:

This dvd player makes your dvd collection organized and easy to access. It's very easy to hook up if you have some home theatre experience...if you dont, it's not worth buying this dvd player. The remote is nice too.

Weakness:

The main thing i dont like is that when you remove a dvd from the player, everything about the dvd gets cleared, which is a major problem if you let people borrow your dvds a lot. Maybe they'll change this in the CX860 300 dvd changer

I dont understand what all these people are complaining about. It's not very hard to figure this dvd player out. All you need to do is read the book and have some patientce. I have about 103 dvds and it took about 30 minutes to file them in with a PS/2 keyboard. Once you have done that, the hardest part is done.

Strength:

200 disks, enhanced wide screen down conversion, easy of use.

Weakness:

does not pass 24/96 digital

I had one of the first and not any problems (knock wood), it was shipped from 1call on the west coast to the east coast. It's too bad some people got bad ones that are probly seconds. I just received a video cd from sony with more icons to load. If and when the DVD makes start putting jacket pictures and text the Explore will work better.

Strength:

To many to name....this thing is loaded with features.

Weakness:

Yes it takes a little time to load and learn to use...get over it, its still a fantastic unit for the price.

My price paid included having it shipped...however I did buy something else at the same time, which cost even more.
The people who seem to hate this machine are the same people who's VCR's still flash "12:00" because they couldn't figure out how to set them up. Come on, you know who you are. Sorry to sound bitter but this unit is far and away the BEST you can buy for the money BAR NONE right now. The sound and picture are superb, Top-Of-The-Line quality. That alone is worth the price of admission. Once you get it set up its a breeze to use. I can jump to any movie in my collection in no time at all. However I will agree that the fact that it starts auto-playing a movie every time you turn it one is a little annoying. Please go buy one, sit down and figure out how to use it (this my take awhile for some) and get the best (sound & picture) out of your movie collection.

Strength:

200 CD/DVD's, Picture, Sound

Weakness:

The disc text is a little weak

I have had this unit a little over a month and it rocks! The video quality is outstanding and I like not having to get up to listen to any one of my Audio CD's or my DVD's. I have a buttload of each and just put my favs in. I don't want to hav to walk ove to the Entertainment center, dig through all my DVD's oCD's, fight with the jewel cases, and Then have to repeat the process all over again just to change. Yeah, 13 characters is a little weak, but it's enuff to give you an idea of what it is. And the optical output is great if you have a good reciever.
