Strength:

200 dvd/cd's thats bout it

Weakness:

Slow.. LOUD disc swapping.. flipping 2 sided dvd's..

I had high hopes when i got this product... BUT... after having it a couple of months i HATE IT... if you use it ouside of a cabinet you get to hear how ungodly loud the dvd swap mechanism is. You also get to hear the laser clicking on the cd or dvd like it is having a hard time holding a signal.. thus having to always have the volume up high even casually watching anything. The dvd labeling is about useless... i use about 70% of it for CD's without the tv on the explorer is useless since you can't flip through titles on the players LCD.. i use this with a da777es which i use sleep mode on at night.. the dvd doesnt turn off with the reciever through the slink as my other units do. Which is extremly annoying to be woken by the clunking of the swap mechinism. Also the fact it wont play cdr's is the worst thing of all... had i known this i wouldnt have bought it. My own fault for not checking first.

Capacity, filing system, and specifications

Weakness:

none

For those of you who bash this product and give it a rating of one star in each area, you are definitely not an audiophile. This DVD/CD player is extremely nice with very good audio and video specifications. Sure, it may be a little slow or difficult to use at first but what do you expect out of a disc changer of this size? You can't compare this to a one to five disc changer in regards to speed and user-friendliness. But, once you have your DVD's and CD's programmed, you are all set. It remembers what you have entered regardless if you have removed a DVD or CD out of one slot and placed it somewhere else. The on-screen display is nice. You can sort everything by genre and can find what you want pretty fast if you know what you are doing. So far I am very pleased with this product. I got one hell of a deal on it and I will enjoy by home theatre without having to get my lazy ass off the couch to change a thing! For those of you who are unsure on whether or not to buy this DVD/CD player, look no more.

Strength:

Component outputs, digital audio outs, holds 200 disks.

Weakness:

Large remote, takes a while to load.

A really good DVD changer for the price, heck you can put your entire DVD collection in it (great for less storage space). I bought mine from BestStopDigital.com, for a good price, However, I would not buy from them again! When I called to confirm my order, they were rude and unfriendly. Then when I recieved my DVD player, It was obviously a returned model, there were deep scratches on the top of the unit, and not all of the packing was in the box. The thing that made me pissed, was that I assumed I was buying a brand new one, never opened. I didn't bother trying to return it, because I didn't want to mess with packing it and paying for the shipping, plus BestStopDigital.com charges a 15% restocking fee. Just take my advice and don't order online from them.

Strength:

Very good audio and visual results

Weakness:

Limited no. of characters available to label disks. Can't play CDR disks. Looses settings once turned off.

I have had none of the reported problems with this player eating DVDs and no real noise issues with it. It makes a certain amount of noise when switching between disks, but plays disks very quietly. I haven't experienced any of the lipsynch problems, but maybe I have not watched Mission Impossible or Ground Hog day on it.

I was looking for a multi-cd player and a dvd player and this model enabled me to get both features in one box. And as the only model available on the UK market at the time, choice was not an option. I've stuck 100 cds and 30 dvds in without any problems and it took me around an hour to type up all the labels on my keyboard.

The graphic icons are a waste of time, being ugly and simplistic as well as slowing the tv browsing down to a snails pace. Once activated they cannot be removed without turning the player off and wiping all the settings. The onscreen messages for the controls are big and clumsy and I can't find a way of turning them off. A minor point, but it still niggles me.

Looking at the comments it seems that if you have not yet bought a multi-dvd player, go and get the new Pioneer model. But then this is often the case, the newer models are generally better than the older ones. No surprise there then.

Me, I'm quite happy with my Sony (yeah it's big, but it looks nice and retro and best of all it has a cool blue light on the bottom of the box)and as a less dedicated user some of the points about access times don't really bother me as much. Casual users should consider the Sony as an option, especially if they can find it substantially cheaper than the Pioneer DV-F727.

Anyway I'm off to buy a Phillips Pronto remote, which I think will solve a lot of the access issues other reviewers have raised.

Strength:

Easy to use menus. Nice picture when it worked.

Weakness:

Poor mechanics. Frequently left disks partially out of carousel. Damaged 7 of my $20 DVDs.

Bought 2 returned 2. Junk. Unworthy of Sony name. Some bean counter cut corners and really blew it. I feel sorry for the engineers that have to design for Sony.

Strength:

It still works most of the time.

Weakness:

Horrible interface, DVD's skip.

First one was DOA. Replacement unit works most of time although 1 of 3 DVDs have skipping problems. Haven't determined if it's the unit or poor DVDs from Netflix. When it works the picture and sound are fine. Biggest complaint is that the functionality is just terrible. Inputting info on discs is obscene. Trying to find and choose disks is terrible. I have problems stopping one disk and selecting another even by choosing a number. I usually have to open the front and then select. Can't believe that it doesn't show the titles i wasted hours inputting when I use the from dial to scroll through the carousel. I have a $5 digital watch which is more user friendly. Selecting folders and playing them is extremely cumbersome as well. The software is so bad I assumed my unit must be faulty but judging from other comments some moron must have actually intended it to operate this way. I don't expect a long life for this unit because one more problem and it's going to fly out the window...

Strength:

Holds 200 discs

Weakness:

Poor interface. Jams frequently

When I purchased this unit, I put ten DVDs in it and pressed play. The DVDs went round and round, and when it tried to play the first DVD it jammed and I had to take the unit apart to get the DVDs out. After that, I left the cover off and tried a variety of discs. The unit jammed about 25% of the time.

Some of my friends have Sony 50 or 200 CD changers and they seem to work fine. If Sony can make a CD changer that doesn't jam, why can't they make a DVD changer that doesn't jam? Shouldn't the disc handling be very similar, if not identical?

The knob on the front to select which DVD to play is very confusing. It's hard to imagine that a single knob that you turn to select the DVD and then push in to activate can be so difficult. The unit trys to figure out which slots have DVDs in them and when turning this knob, only those slot numbers show up. I always ended up pressing stop, opening the door, selecting the disc with the knob, closing the door, and then pressing play.

After having nothing but problems, I returned the unit and got the Sony 650 five DVD changer. It's strange, when you look at the specs, the two units are identical (except for the number of discs), but most people seem to hate the 850 and like the 650.

Strength:

Holds 200 DVD's, Automatically picks up where you left off when you stop or turn off unit. Sound and Picture are fantastic.

Weakness:

The GUI is terrible.

I must say I have had this unit for approximately a month. Well as my library has grown (expecially since I got 10 DVD'd for Xmas) this unit has shown its age. I do have all of my titles on my HP 660LX Palm Top PC. However, there are times when I do not want to check the PC and see what title I would like to watch. I have sorted all of my titles that are exal to 160 now, and it is a headache trying to get to a title by scrolling down the list of titles from a to z. The good thing is I just CTRL+F and type in my title on the Palm PC and am able to get the movie and type in the corresponding # and there it is. I am not totally diappointed in my purchase, but I will be selling this unit within the next month and I will purchase the Onkyo 300 DVD changer. I strongly suggest that you carefully read you the reviews on this site. Although this is a good idea it really falls short of any significant advancement in technology besides the fact you can actually put 200 DVD's in the unit (but it will take you approximately 10 minutes to browse the explorer, if it had a page down/page up feature it would have helped a lot).
