Video Performance! Multi Disc player.

None at this price point!

I have been looking for a replacement for my aging Sony DVP-S530D that has had an amazing picture for six years, but it has been freezing up on me with alot of movies as of late. Also getting the C:13:00 dirty disc message comes up. But I wash all the DVDs I rent first. I then bought a Denon DVD-900, that player was no ware close to as good as my old player in terms of picture qaulity, so I returned it. I looked at alot of other players and was not happy with what I saw. I finaly turned back to Sony and bought the DVP-NC665P five disk DVD player. We have been wanting a multi disk player for many years. Well I was impressed from the moment I started setting it up with the on screen menu. The instruction book matched the set up menu set by step! It has many great video setting to help tweak video performance. I used the Avia DVD to calibrate my TV to the new DVD player, and after tweaking the TV settings I was able to further better the contrast, hue, color using the players settings to come closer to perfection. I do not use any of the digital video enhancers as that is a form of scan modulation. I did however use the Block Noise Reduction set at it's highest setting. I don't know if it works or not but it did not effect the picture quality. I do not use the Progressive scan mode as my Pioneer Elite Pro-520HD has a far better line doubler than most refrence DVD players. Now that I was set up I popped in three DVDs each picked for a particular video quality I wanted to test. The first was Austen Powers third movie, Fith Eliment (supper Bit), Blade Two. Austen powers DVDs always have a veriety of brite colors in this case I was looking for the players ability to display reds and oranges without artifects, or scan lines in those colors. Next I watched Blade 2 because this disc has been scartched up and repaired and would not play sertain chapters in my old player. Also it is a very dark movie and wanted to look at the players ability to show shadow detail in dark passages. Finaly Fith Eliment, just because it's my favorite out of all of my DVDs. Well this player surpassed all of my expectations! It has a wonderful picture! Detail, Deep Colors, deep blacks, and wonerful depth to the picture. It is equal if not just a hair better than my old Sony player, probably do to the video enhancement built into the player. The only down side if I had to be picky is that there is a slight graininess in some dark movies, but it might be the movie not the player. Also this new player will not play damaged DVDs as well as the Denon DVD-900. On to the audio side of this player. I use the digital coax out to my Denon AVR-3300 receiver so I do not use the players DACs as the Denon has much better DACs that sound warm and smooth. Now the exchange play works great with any type of dics I use. The only other thing I dont like about this player is when I tell it to shuffle all CDs on random play it does not switch to a differnt CD every time a song ends. But thats ok, at least I dont have to reload when one CD is finished playing. I guess I could also program it to do what I want but that takes far to long. Build quality is good to excellant. At $169 with tax this players video performance blows is equal to players costing four times it's price tag. And it's a five disk DVD player, what more can you ask for! Highly recommended! This is a review of DVP NC665. I'm posting here b/c i couldn't find correct listing. Anyways, DO NOT BUY this crap. Picture quality is actually WORSE than my non progressive, 3 year old Toshiba dvd player. I was hoping this pregressive $hit was going to improve on my old Toshiba but nooooooo. This is a definite step DOWN! FUuuK! Now i have to go thru the hassle of returning this cr@p. I ain't no n00b, I did my best to tweak the picture but nope. It ain't gonna work out. COme to think of it, it sort of makes sense why this new "pregressive scan" unit has worse picture than my old Toshiba. My old toshiba costed me $300. This new one cost me 140. They cut $160 off the product and they gotta skimp somewhere! I guess after i return this one i'll bite the bullet and buy Denon DVP 910. Ironically new denon dvp will probably set me back about $300 just like my old toshiba. Once again, the old saying comes true. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR! Coveat Emptor.

It has selectable-progressive scan so if I ever get a HDTV when I'm older, I'll have that. variety of outputs for audio and video. simple easy to understand design. On-screen menu displays for changing settings. Audio and video enhancements and my favorite is the Night mode which just makes audio louders and you can hear the slightest pindrop (not to be corny but you can) even using the sound from your tv, its a cool touch. The picture is good through my Sharp 27inch flatscreen (component video cables used) and audio through my onkyo receiver and klipsch towers sounds great.

none for a $200 dvd player. and despite what other reviewers say, there is a track repeat button for music, that orange light from hell is not the end of the world, and the audio is not flat, do a little adjusting on your receiver, and if you're using a tv, I don't know what kind of miracle your expecting for sound quality.

SO i was looking around for a multi-disc dvd player to start my hometheater in my bedroom(Im only 18 give me a break). Chose this Sony because it was a multi-disc, optical out, and MP3 playback. If all you are looking for a dvd player thats inexpensive, selectable-progressive scan, multi-disc, and easy to use, this is a very good buy. If you're looking for HDCD SACD or DVD-Audio, don't complain that this unit doesn't have it.. because you should have bought one that does if thats what you were looking for.

Suprising number of outputs, you could use this for a multiroom system. Nice display both on the face plate and the OSD, easy to setup and navigate. Nice progressive picture for the price.

Again, it's $200. At this price they're minor.

Why did an audiophile buy this $199 dvd player? Two reasons, gave away a an old sony 7000 and needed a quick replacement awesome player by the way) and I'm waiting for the formats to settle down(DVD-Audio, HD DVD, SACD etc.) to settle down before buying a quality muti-channel player. So since my remote was already programmed for a sony dvd player I picked up this unit. I was going to buy a single disc player but this was on sale for the same price and since its not a reference player anyway I thought the carousel would be fun to use when listening to music. As for the player, what more can you ask for or expect for 200 dollars. It plays dvds, the picture is fine and yes, while the audio is not all that spectacular in analog mode, it really is a non-issue for multi-channel audio since when using a digital cable to connect it to a mulit-channel reciever, you're using the DAC's in the reciever anyway. People blaming the unit for bad dolby digital should look a bit closer at the quality of their receiver's DAC's & amplifiers. Buy a decent coaxial cable (I use a Straightwire Silver Link II) and you'll be fine. My final thoughts...rarely can you achieve AV nirvana for $200, so don't expect it. This player is great for the money. P.S. I bought a 3 year service plan for it because most likely the plastic gears in the carousel won't last forever. Being able to take it back if it breaks for $25 dollars more seemed a decent idea.

Great bright lights (orange and green)on front panel, I can clearly see them from a distance. It's great with the lights are out, so I know what disc is playing. Cleaver job Sony! Fast switching of discs.

Cannot repeat a favorite song continously, and there isn't a button on the front panel or remote.

This DVD player plays just about any format. I purchased this player, because Iam building a home theater slowly and don't want many components and wires. The player handles discs formats such as: DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD-RAM, CD-R, CD-RW, CD with MP3s and a video CD with the MPEG 3 format. This surely removes all the unnecessary clutter of components on the rack. It also has all the necessary audio video components I need, and what more can I ask for? This is a progressive scan player(P). Currently, I have hooked up this player to an RCA mini stereo system for cheap sound. That RCA will go away and be replaced with a Yamaha receiver and Monitor Audio or B&W speakers.

Can not exchange dvd with the remote while playing a Dvd.

This DVD player is the Bomb!!! it is good quailty and sounds great. I have JBL N-Series hook up to a Denon 1802 Reciever which is a good combo..My Fronts sound ok but could be better. With the Sony DVP-NC665P you can do multpl things you can change out a DVD with a DVD playing in it which i think is good I use this function alot. E-Z set up for those who are not good with DVD setup. I have not use the Progressive Scan yet because my TV does not support (PS). This DVD Player is a good one to replace your old one..I use my old one in the Bedroom now.

Audio rather flat

The video looks great and I am very pleased to have a 5 disc carousel with progressive and MP3. Sony historically has not made a good DVD player until this year. When I first hooked it up I noticed the audio was rather flat and not very rich. I thought it was just my ears until the previous two posts mentioned the same thing. I am going to find another unit and return this one. If you don't mind the flat audio, the unit is a fair deal.

This product went back to the store becuase it just didn't sound as good as the single disc Toshiba 1200 DVD player I was trying to replace because of DTS output problems with my Rotel receiver. I don't know whether it was the 5 disc changer that decreased the quality of the sound, or if it was just sony. I've tried the new Onkyo, which I am also not that impressed with (freezing, expensive for weight). Other reviewers said sonys weren't great for sound as well. Must say that remote and functionality were excellent, however. It could remember 30 positions. I didn't like the Disc 1-5 indicators lighting up in orange, however! I don't want to see orange when I turn off the light! Toshiba had the best sound, even if the DTS didn't work all the time.

I purchased this dvd player a little over 2 months ago. Since that time I have played numerous dvds and cds. The picture quality is outstanding. There are many menu options to tweek the picture to make it even better like Block Noise Reduction, Digital Video Enhancer which enhances the outlines of images, various picture modes including Standard, Dynamic 1, Dynamic2, Cinema 1, Cinema 2 and Memory. One cool feature I really like is that the display will show remaining time for the disc and current chapter as well. Another cool feature is the replay button which will replay the previous 10 seconds of the movie. Of course it has all the standard features; play exchange, random play of all 5 discs,etc... It displays the title on the display as well as the t.v. screen. It also has resume playback for up to 40 discs were it remembers the point were you stopped at last time and resumes playback from the same point the next time you insert the same disc. The remote has many small buttons, but they are logically laid out. The remote will also control the volume from your t.v. or receiver. The only weakness I have found is the sound. It sounds good, but in a direct comparison with 3 dvd players made by Toshiba, I thought the Toshibas sounded better (fuller more 3 dimensional sound) in Dolby Digital. In DTS they all were very similar. I stuck with the Sony because while the Toshibas sounded a little better, the Sony was much more user friendly to me, ie, remaining time, the remote controls my Onkyo receiver, easier to read display that shows the disc number, title, chapter, and time all at one time. Overall, I think it is a very good player, I do wish it had the zoom feature like the Toshiba's.
