Strength:
SACD at a ridiculous price. pretty good as a DVD player, and better than expected CD sound.
Weakness:
I only found one at best buy! This is the deal that I brag about! Wanted to test the sacd waters without spending a lot of $. Reasoned that if it flopped I'd still have a decent dvd player. What a steal! SACD sounds so clear and full, although I can't compare this player to any others. Good dvd playback(but no progressive scan), great SACD performance, and even surprisingly good CD sound. I was told that Sony slashed the price of these to help push SACD software sales. Maybe, maybe not. All I know is that I got in the SACD game for very cheap. The replacement for this model from Sony is twice the price, so maybe they got wise to it. Similar Products Used: 1st SACD player, NAD 541i for cd. (I couldn't tell it apart from the Sony without looking). Denon cd players, (ehhh..) Other Sony dvd players. |

Nicely balanced player
Weakness:
no complaints Two Thumbs Up -Quiet operation -Smooth Tray -nice sound after 2 or 3 days burn in -handles scratched disks effortlessly -There are a full set of controls on the front of the player that make the remote a convenience rather than a necesity -Build quality is satisfactory -Has Super Audio CD if you care Forget about the cheaper players, start with this one. Strength:
Outstanding sound quality for the price!
Weakness:
Cheap construction(?) As far as I am concerned, this player and its 5 disc brother - the DVP-NS650V - are the best kept secret in audio!!! I had never been impressed with Sonys audio products before - and I have owned(and still do) a few. To get to the point here - I bought this player based on the recommendation of a prominent speaker builder in the high-end SET community.(No - I am currently not using an SET set-up, though I find the remarks of its' proponents intriguing...) I bought this player for $149 at Best Buy; took it home, hooked it up and was astonished at what I heard. This player on standard CDs goes head to head with my current $1K player and in some regards, may even surpass it(inner detail). The Sony produces a very smooth, non-digital sounding presentation - yet there is gobs of detail. Acoustic instrument timbre seems to be pretty close to "spot on". Vocals are natural and immediate. On SACDs - WOW!!! On some recordings it literally is as though you are there at the performance! I am well aware that much of a components sound is dependent on system synergy, so I will qualify this by saying it works extremely well in MY system. I will add this however - I was so impressed with the sound of this player that I went right back to BB and bought this players 5 disc carousel brother - the DVP-NS650V($199)!!! This is now in my bedroom system and also sounds fantastic. All that I said of the 500V also pertains to the 650V. I suspect that the internals are similar if not identical. Either of these players are a steal at their price if you are looking for smooth, non-fatiguing, sound. I can't wait for more SACDs to become available!!! The system that I auditioned the 500V in : Jolida JD302B 50w/ch tube integrated ACI Sapphire III on 25" stands Alpha-Core Goertz MI II speaker cable(excellent!) Picture quality, SACD playback, cost.
Weakness:
NO ZOOM FEATURE!!! Great unit for the money. Excellent dvd picture quality, better than my TechnicsA-10n. SACD playback outstanding for such a low cost unit. Regular CD'S sound ery good also. Bass reproduction on SACD varies greatly between software. Overall an excellent value Similar Products Used: Technics A10-N, Toshiba 1200,Panasonic A-320,Denon CD players. |

Strength:
Everything except build quality and 16 bit CD playback
Weakness:
NONE A magnificent piece of equipment for SACD playback. I don't care how expensive your 16 bit CD player is, SACD samples at 64times greater than standard CD, and the result is a near perfect replication of the analog waveform. 16 bit audio just can't compete. Although this unit is inexpensive, only a multi-thoudand dollar 16 bit CD player can come close, and it still can't sample at 64x. I will be the first to concede that the build quality of this unit does not come close to that of a high end CD player, but who cares. This is very high-end audio at an unbelievable price point. Put on the SACD version of the Billie Holiday masterpiece "Lady in Satin" and you realize that for the first time in audio history you the consumer are actually listening to the master tape. It is an unforgetable experience that will simply bring you to tears. One of the great buys in the history of audio. 16 bit playback is competent, but not high end. |

Strength:
SACD sound quality. Price - get one before they are all gone.
Weakness:
Plastic construction. Sony Music's STUPID refusal to make hybrid SACD's that will play on any CD player - every other manufacturer of SACDs does. I think that this unit is about the biggest bargain that I have ever purchased. I had previously purchased a couple Telarc SACD's since they could be played on any CD player. When I saw this unit on closeout at Best Buy I jumped at it. This player will play just about any disc made - the high resolution layer on DVD Audio discs is about all it won't play (it will play the Dolby Digital layer on DVD Audio discs though). I wanted a taste of high resolution SACD and I wasn't disappointed. The sound quality of stereo SACD's, and the stereo track on multi-channel discs, is better in almost every regard than the CD layer played through my $1000 digital converter. The SACD discs are expensive, but even this cheap machine can top very expensive CD playback. Alison Krauss's voice on "Forget About It" is just so much clearer in SACD than the CD layer played through the digital converter - the CD playback of this unit is not audiophile grade. Although it works fine as a transport for the converter. I have heard better SACD playback, but those were $3000-$5000 players. As for DVD, it functions just like my old Sony DVD. This one will play CD-R's that my old unit wouldn't which was a bonus. I don't know about the SACD multi-channel capability since my surround receiver does not have 5.1 input jacks. Dolby Digital and DTS both work fine when playing DVD's. Strength:
Plays SACD, although I found it completely useless, because ***MANY*** CDs are recorder with much better quality than common SACD. I found that most SACDs are remastered
Weakness:
See above I use this receiver mostly to listen to music and I must tell you that I am very disappointed. The player overheats at 75-80F and starts skipping the material. It also has a very slow fast-forward within a song. In terms of quality of sound it's not any better than my Pioneer CD recorder with a digital output. My system (I am happy with the rest of it): Ahthem AVM-2 pre-amp Rotel 1095 power-amp Paradigm reference 100 main speakers Paradigm monitor rear speakers Monster speaker cable |

Strength:
sounds just fine plays SACDs compact size low price
Weakness:
slow to access CDs (typcially of DVD players) remote only works a few other brands I bought this player primarily for CDs and SACDs, I do not have it hooked up to a TV right now. At under $200 now, it's a great bargain. For most people, a mass market DVD player like this is fine for music. I noticed hardly any difference between this and a Marantz CD-5000 redbook player. It was perfectly competent: smooth, clear, and musical just fine. Don't let complaints about CD performance deter from this unit. If it sounds good to you, go for it. On SACDs, my mid-fi setup probably precludes hearing dramatic differences, but they are noticeable. SACDs have a sweeter treble that is easier on the ears, more solid imaging, and more palpable presence. All in all, this unit does what it's supposed to do at a very affordable price. No zoom, poor FF. Lack of progressive scan. Cant paly DVD-AUDIO, HDCD and MP3 In any rate this is the cheapest way to get you to the high quality music and movie sound. SACD is unbelivable. Similar Products Used: Sony SACD players, Toshiba, Denon |
