Sony DVP NS900V DVD Players

Sony DVP NS900V DVD Players

DESCRIPTION

The DVP-NS900V features 480P (progressive) output with full 3:2 reverse pull-down conversion powered by a film-detection system for well-balanced, progressive conversion both for film and video material. The progressive player also features a high performance progressive scan Digital-to-Analog Converter (DAC), which provides the truest DVD playback quality with the sharpest possible picture.

The DVP-NS900V comes equipped with Sony's Digital Video Enhancer, providing sharper edge detail on video images by minimizing imperfections, such as ""overshooting"" and ""ringing."" The benefits are even more spectacular when the product is paired with a high-performance television, such as one of Sony's FD Trinitron Wega XBR or rear projection Hi-Scan TV sets.

Other features include Precision Drive System 2 with Dynamic Tilt Compensation to ensure better, faster and more accurate playback of flawed and imperfect DVDs, along with Block Noise Reduction for maximizing picture quality of MPEG2 images by eliminating unwanted artifacts in scenes where gradated images and the movement of objects between two fields are present.

Another advantage of the NS900V is its construction. To meet the quality demands of audiophiles, it incorporates rigid construction and audio quality parts, including an R-core transformer. It also has ""video off"" more when it works for a pure audio player.

The NS900V also includes an LCD remote control for more advanced and convenient operation.

Strength:

Outstanding picture, many adjustment options, build quality. DD, DTS, and SACD decoders.

Weakness:

The remote needs some minor tweaks, but is very nice overall.

This unit replaced a Sony DVP-530d that had a noisy transport and quite a noisy picture as well. This player fixed both of those problems and has exceeded my expectations. Great interlaced picture quality on my 32" Wega. I really love the adjustments to the picture that are available with this player. Block noise reduction, Video EQ, Picture enhancment, etc. Build quality is nice, not quite that of my 777ES receiver, but quite a notch above the budget players. I have some SACD''s on order so I can''t comment on the SACD sound, but i''m anxiously waiting to see. The remote is quite nice. Although, I wish the ''Audio'' and ''Subtitles'' functions were hard buttons instead of in the ''scroll'' menu. Overall, i''d buy another in a heartbeat...well done Sony!

SACDS!!! where are you?

first i used to play my DVDs on the PS2, but it couldnt handle the fifth element, the BBC wallace and gromit, and no chance to get to the specials on T2; german edition. so i decided to buy a real DVD- player, and it works fine. the SACD- thing: i like it in theory, cause some people were thinking about a better way storing music, than the CD does, but wheres the software? miles davies, kind of blue, listen to the first minute on track for, some noise like oversteering, and this on SACD? i dont really understand this kind of handling this medium, should be very good, but give us software! well, picture is fine, very low noise (compared to the philips SACD 1000, all the time relais clicking, was really annoying!), fine remote- control, and CD- sound is good, has been a problem to some players before. good product, and the missing 5th star is for the missing software for SACD.

Strength:

SACD preformance Video preformance Remote

Weakness:

CD preformance is just OK.

All in all the DVP-NS900V is quite swell. The $300.00 price drop is even more of an enticement. That is, unless you purchased one a month or so ago. The fit and finish is nowhere near the DVP-9000ES; no hermetically sealed drawer here or 28lbs, but is still a step above normal. Just not fanatical. I find the remote to be quite different than the one used in the 9000,7700,7000...etc But as is always with Sony, it is quite good. The progressive scan preformance is very good. However, unlike the 9000ES, the DVP-NS900V does not use the Genesis two chip solution. Rather, it uses a in house design which seems identical to the DVP-NS700P. Multichannel SACD preformance is also good.

Video/Sound Preformance Remote

Weakness:

Has a capture cord precluding any AC mains tweaking

At the price this unit is moving at, it is a blooming steal. For about $650.00 you get a good feature set, remote, picture, and sound. Solely as a CD player, it is fair to middling. As an SACD player it is truly sublime. Sorry to those who purchased before the 300.00 price drop. I have been on the other side of that equation and it blows.

build quality, great value for money´

Weakness:

no progr. scan (european version)

Being an audiophile I am used to high standards. My previous set consisted of a hi end pre amplifier with sperate monoblocks, a modified CD-transport coupled to a separate DAC. I recently moved to a smaller house and the small living room is not quite the surrounding in which the hi end set can really prosper. So I chose to sell the lot to replace it with a Sony FBA940R amplifier and this DVD-SACD player. This time I went for the robust and classy looks of the QS-series and the comfort of having only two boxes instead of five. Being a perfectionist I expected to take a big step back from the sound I was used to. But after hooking up the Sony amp I was pleasently surprised to hear the sound did not get worse. Actually, the amp matched up to my hi end set (costing four times as much) very well. Moreover, the NS900V is an excelent partner for this amp and sounds wonderful when playing SACD''s. In the beginning the quality of normal CD playback was less than my old set, but I this player needs some time to get '' played in'' . After a few weeks of playing-time It sounds quite good indeed. Furthermore, you can do a lot of tweaking with this machine: I like the features of turning off the LED display and video-cicuits; this really improves sound quality! If you haven''t tried this please give it a shot: you won''t be disappointed! I am not a video-expert, but what I can say about DVD-playback is the following: the video quality is not as sharp as the philips Q50, but very good still and the picture is easier to look at. The ergonomics are much better than the philips and for video too you can tweak the picture and adjust to your likings. All in all I am very happy with this set- I can recommend it to ayone who doesn''t want to pay lots of money to get good quality sound and picture! If you want a matching amp too, try the FBA 940R: also highly recommended!

Strength:

Ability to play all CD media; 5.1 SACD; comprehensive controls for modifying video output. Two Scart outlets.

Weakness:

Lack of NTSC progressive scan (this is a machine intended for Europe) and the familiar Sony design feature of locking the power lead into the chassis.

I was more impressed with this machine than I expected to be. The remote is quite good - simpler to use than I had expected to be the case, after reading other reviews - and the picture is as good as the 7700. When I get it installed in my main system with a Panasonic plasma screen, I will comment further.

I was amused by all the video adjustments available which, with a couple of exceptions, appear to exist to compensate for less than first class displays. A lot of experimentation ahead.

It's interesting that, out of the Sony factory, this is a true multi-zone machine, even playing R1/RCE DVDs on a nominally R4 unit.

Its value rating of '3' actually under-sells the product. Recommended Retail Price on this machine in Australia is $A2300 - that's the equivalent of $US1165. The notional US price is $999 - before discounts. Just another case of Sony Australia ripping off its buying public. Thank goodness for the discount offered by the dealer!

Strength:

Picture quality (in svideo mode only)

Weakness:

build quality (see below)
Picture is not so great using the RGB output

Hi, I'm from france, and the DVP-NS900 that I've bought at the beginning of november is the european version : that means no progressive scan (and probably, our version has Scart output that you don't need in US).
When I play DVD's that are encoded in 4/3 format, my Sony TV (36" : KV-36FS70, one year old) becomes crazy, and randomly switches from its DVD input, to aonther input like VCR or câble....then the pictures dissapears and comes back, and the picture switches to 4/3 then 16/9 then full, etc, etc.....
This is a known bug on the european version, due to the bad management of the voltage that powers one of the pin of the scart output of the player.
It has taken one month to Sony to deliver a fix (which is actually not a proper work). Many people of english audio-video forums have decided to get back their money (the fix needs 2-3 weeks, as mentionned by Sony).
Anyway, I find that the picture is not so stunning, especially using the RGB output and mode. The svideo mode is a little bit sharper and more detailled, but the colours are not so warm : I don't see the use of having a 54Mhz processor for the video.

My previous Pioneer 717 delivered a better image and had no such bug. I've the feeling that Sony wanted to release the largest possible numbers of DVD/SACD models, and they released on the market a model (for europe) that has a bad video board. The worst is that Sony continues to sell these units (all of the units are affected by this issue) without waiting for a new serie to be released.
SACD is rather good, but not so good as SC-777 or, of course, SCD-1.

GREAT SACD

Weakness:

no zoom that I can find

I'm more of an audiophile then a videophile.I haven't played too many movies with it butthe ones I have run look good.Great picture quality.I had a dvp-ns500v for about a month but brought it back because the sound was too harsh for me.I traded up for a 900 & am glad I did.Everything mellowed out considerabely. On the 500 I didn't hear smooth at all.I ended up buying an Outlaw ICBM to handle the bass management for the SACD part.It kicks azz.Now I can't stop playing sacd's to watch movies.I found a couple of good sites online to order them from & have been making them rich in the past few months.I prefer the dual layer ones to the sony ones.Seems like the small companies are putting more time & effort into the sound.Multi channel is godd but there isn't a whole lot to choose from.Sorry but Billy Joel on multi just doesn't do it for me.Guademas is cool.
