Strength:

Excellent detail and colour picture quality Good sound quality Very good build Excellent value for money

Weakness:

Remote (no light in buttons

Just picked this DVD/SACD player up 2 weeks ago. And what a player it is !! So far I've only used it for playing DVD (SACD yet to be tested). However, as a DVD player it is absolutely awesome. My previous DVD player was a Pioneer DVD717 - the sound a picture on that player was good. But the Sony with the new 12 bit / 108 MHz video dac, blows the Pioneer ouf of the water. The picture quality is rystal clear, with magnificient detail. I use the player together with a Philips PF9975 30" LCD screen (using Philips PixelPlus technology)- the picture is to die for. Especially landscapes, faces are crips and full of detail and the advanced menu lets you tweak the picture quality using e.g. noise blocking. I have yet to test yhe player with component feed (the player has built in Sony's Precision Cinema Progressive circuit), which will only futher improve the picture. The build is good and the player will fit in almost anywhere due to its small size. The drive itself, using Sony's Precision Drive 2 technology is in a league of itself - it runs smoothly, allows you to instantly pick up a movie or audio track from where you last stopped the disc, and the player is very silent when in use. As one small downside, the remote is not the most ergonomic or easiest-to-use in its class and one could miss the button lights seen in other remotes. But this still cannot change the fact that this player is a bargain.

Strength:

Compact. SACD and MP3.

Weakness:

Cannot play MP3s of DVD-R but what can?? Let me know if you find one..

Works as described. I got this primarily for playing SACD and MP3s. It shines on both. First the SACD. I have played SACD for about 10 hours through this machine (I have two other SACD players). This one is hooked to a ARC LS3 Preamp, CJ MF 200 Amp and a set of Carver Amazing Platinum Mark IV - All I have had for about 10 years. I played mostly jazz SACDs (Bruebeck, Barber, Monk, etc) and all sound very lively and with great presense. P. Barber's Cafe Blue SACD specially sounds excellent with a great midrange and shimmer in the cymbals that I never got via the CD. All in all a good buy for a combi player. MP3s sound excellent as well. I have this hooked up "direct" for SACD and through a ARC DAC 1 for MP3s and CD. Let me tell you I cannot notice a differece when I hit the direct and CD switch on my preamp. What I am saying is that this player is almost as good as the ARC DAC on MP3s. The ARC DAC was a winner in its days!! Great buy. And DVD to boot. But I did not test that.
