Strength:

Solid performance, plays cdr's, PLAYS DTS !!

Weakness:

No component video outputs

I've had this DVD player for several years, and it is still the best. I replaced it with a Toshiba SD-2109 last year because I wanted component video outputs. I put the Sony in the kids room, and figured that was that. Well, the Toshiba isn't worth the box it came in. This Sony has a better picture with S-video than the Toshiba with component outputs. Also, It DOES work with DTS!!! I was hesitant to retrieve my Sony S300 from the kids room because i had already bought several DTS disks. A friend and i were talking, and his opinion was that if the DVD player was passing a bitstream to an external decoder for processing, it shouldn't matter what it was. Well he was right. I connected the S300 to my Sony STRDA333ES, and popped in The Eagles "Hell Freezes Over" DTS CD. It sounded great! Next came "Saving Private Ryan" in DTS, same great sound! I have my Sony back where it belongs, and the kids get the Toshiba.
I almost feel guilty.

Just got this unit from a local independent dealer, paid a bit more than on the internet, but I want to keep these guys in business... anyway, it is an excellent unit, well made, easy to use, and I would strongly recommend it to anyone. My TV does not have RGB input, so I didn't need it (this unit does NOT have RGB output). The S-video is cool with me. Problems? Well, the remote's buttons are strangly placed, especially for a home theater component (I don't want to turn on the lights during a movie....argh!!!) but other than that, i am happy with it. I can't stand to even look at my VCR anymore - DVD makes you snobby!

Weakness:

No DTS, No Component

Great DVD player. I've had this player for almost a year and I haven't had any problems with it. It has the dual lasers so it can play CD-Rs which is great for playing home made VCDs of the family vacation.

Strength:

Reliability
Anamorphic Downconversion

Weakness:

Some "softness" an downconverted discs
Doesn't play CDR or CDRW
No DTS processing

An excellent entry level player, which is now discontinued. Does not have DTS or component out, but is rock solid in all other respects. Great build quality and glitch-free playback. Have only seen problems on 1 or 2 discs, which is true of all players. If you see one on closeout for say, less than $180 and don't care about DTS or component, it's a great buy even among the newer players available.

This is a great player for the money. While it lacks certain high-end features (such as component output and DTS), it provides a great picture and solid audio for both DVD and CD. The only problems I have had are intolerance of smudged DVDs and a slight delay in supplying the Dolby Digital bit stream to my receiver after pushing play. Otherwise, this a great entry-level player that will not disappoint.

Bought it when it first came out and still love it. Sounds and looks great. The best part is it plays VCDs and burned VCDs which a lot of my friend's players will not do. For the price it was a great buy.

Strength:

Free of glitches. Great picture.

Weakness:

Lack of DTS support.

I bought this player in early 99. I was debating whether to wait for 330 (which has DTS support) or just grab the 300. I decided to get the 300 and I have never regretted it. DTS has been a bust so far software-wise and the 330 has the now infamous lip synch problems. In the countless movies I've watched over the past 10 months, I haven't run into any glitches on this player. I love it and I'd buy it again.

Strength:

Great picture and sound. Easy setup.

Weakness:

NONE

Many believe this player is close to the 7700 in quality, comparing it to a rave review on the Toshiba SD-3006 this is one great DVD player. I think you should keep the decoding to a dedicated processor that knows the business. Using it with a Denon AVP-8000 this thing produces a awesome picture and also great cd sound. With SVHS cable, the picture has perfect color and no saturation.Excellent unit if you can find one. The newer DVD units are getting cheaply built compared to this horse.

Strength:

Dual laser pick-up,CD-R and CD-RW playback,Excellent sound with music CD's.

Weakness:

No Dolby Digital/DTS output. No component out

This is a great low cost entry level DVD player. Unlike most players it has a dual laser mechanism and therefore has no problems playing CD-R's and CD-RW's. Very good as an alternative to a music player. Remote control has good button layout and is easy to use. Has a simple but comprehensive onscreen menue. Excellent picture and sound quality. Does not have lip sync problem like the newer Sony DVD players.I have had it for 15 months and so far no problems. Great choice if you play original music CD's or CD-R and CD-RW music CD's due to dual laser.
