Tremendous DVD player for the price. I use the S-video outputs to a Sony 32" WEGA TV and optical digital to a Sony STRAD50ES. Only two drawbacks are no DTS and no component video, but the unit does have two discrete lasers for CD and DVD playing (newer Sony units with the exception of the 7700 do not). |

Bought this player about 3 months ago, and it's worked flawlessly so far! Great picture, and cool features. If you can get your hands on one of these, I'd say go for it! |

Strength:
great picture and audio play.
Weakness:
none, except for that is doesn't support DTS, but who needs that This is great DVD player, the only thing that kinda sucks is the lack of DTS. At first I was kinda mad about that, but after checking all of my DVDs, i didn't care, because none of them were in DTS. This is a good beginner DVD player. Similar Products Used: none |

Strength:
Great DVD player.
Weakness:
No DTS, if you care, but looks like maybe it can pass the signal after all. No component out. I bought my Sony open box, but before I did, I also bought two of the Toshiba first gen DVD players. The first one I had would skip during certain scenes of a movie, so I returned it for another Toshiba (also a first gen, but a different model -- a step up, actually). I tried the same scene (Money Talks, when the guy shoots at Chris Tucker when he's looking for the diamonds. When it shows the gun shoot, it would skip or something), and it screwed up again. Took that one back. Got the Sony and haven't looked back since. Now, the Toshibas were both 8 bit, and the Sony is 10, which I figured was probably the problem. When you pull up the bit feature, it does jump on that scene, so I suppose it happens pretty frequently with the 8 bit players. Anyway, suffice it to say, this is one heck of a DVD player. Couldn't be happier (although now I'm thinking I might want the Sony 200 disc DVD changer. It's just too cool). Similar Products Used: Toshiba DVD |

Strength:
Dual pick-up, good buttons on remote
Weakness:
No DTS - but for this price, who cares! I just bought this on close out for $166!!! Now that I've read the other reviews on this site, I'm realizing how great a deal I got. It was fresh right out of the box. Similar Products Used: Looked at pricey Rotel & Denon units |

Strength:
Rugged. Dual lasers.
Weakness:
No DTS output. No component output. I've owned this unit for over 2 years. Never a single problem with it. It has played everyone of the hundreds of DVDs I've watched during the 2 years - everything from the early 'flippers' to the latest DVD-18. I've recently upgraded to an HDTV and soon will be reluctantly retiring this unit in favor of a progressive scan player. I just hope the new unit gives me the same reliability I've had with the S300. Strength:
Reliable, Durable (Dual Discrete), Part of SONY's "pre-plastic" generation electronics.
Weakness:
Kind of boring bells and whistles. Early generation DVD player, so no MP3 support and limited CD-R support. I got my player in January 1999, and the only problems I have had have been fixed by sending through a lens cleaner. The picture is supurb, even run through an RF modulator box and run into my 11-year old TV. I'm running the sound through an AIWA receiver, and it sounds excellent. There's no zoom and the screensaver is pretty "dumb" for a $400 DVD player, but hey, like I care. I don't see this player dying anytime soon and it's one of the components I own that has helped me gain a little more faith in SONY. |

Strength:
Solid, good performer
Weakness:
No DTS, if you call that a weakness Owned the Toshiba then the Panasonic. Both had problems with the newer dual layer discs. Sold both snd got the Sony 300. Not a problem since. Similar Products Used: Panasonic and Toshiba |

After replacing my aging Pioneer LD/CD player with the Sony, I was impressed by how much better CD's sounded on the Sony. I have a Toshiba 16:9 rptv and for the first time since I bought it experienced the full glory of s-vhs anamorphic video. It was wonderful...much better than any laserdisc I had ever viewed. I am very happy with the unit's performance on both movies and music. I have only used the digital audio out, so I can't comment on the performance on two-channel stereo through the analog outputs. I give this unit 5 stars for value and performance. The rest of my system consists of a Pioneer VSX-D906S a/v receiver, DefTech BP2002 L/R, CLR center, and BPX rears. |
