Strength:
Ease of use. No frills with this one. It does what it was designed to do and that's to play movies with little effort.
Weakness:
The noisy motor which usually disappears after I turn up the volume! This is my second review of this DVD Player. The first one was exactly 2 years ago! This unit is still running strong!! I don't know why other people are having problems with this piece. I use it at least 3-4 times a week and it never fails me. I have been a loyal SONY consumer for a very long time and will continue to be one. I use S_Video and a Coax Cable and this thing kicks butt!! Strength:
Excellent picture quality, excellent sound. Remote control works quite well and the buttons are well situated. Setup is simple and straight forward, and the instruction manual is well written.
Weakness:
Does not come with a digital output cable. Until two days ago, we had not used a digital cable simply because it was not provided and we assumed it was not needed (lack of knowledge showing here..). I bought a Monster Cable two days ago. I was quite sickened when I heard the difference in sound. And of course: - DVD player can not figure out how to line up the A with the V. (Sound out of synch with picture) - DVD player cannot figure how to make the V work reliably. (Random video freeze ups) - BSoD. 'Nuff said. My family purchased this DVD player a few years ago (can't remember exactly when) as part of a home theatre system (our first). Having no experience with other DVD players prior to purchasing this model, and in fact never having watched a DVD before, we had no idea that something was wrong with this player. My family and I had assumed that the problems with voice synching (the first problem we encountered) were inherent in the technology. We found that by simply stopping and starting the DVD, the problem went away. As this only happened occasionally, we didn't worry about it. Then we started having problems with the movies "freezing". We would be watching a movie, it would stick and then jump to some other part of the movie, sometimes the beginning, sometimes a random chapter/scene. Very annoying. To get around this, we would have to jump to the chapter/scene ahead of where the movie froze, then rewind to just after the freeze point, and go from there. When you are watching somthing like Jurassic Park, and the thing locks up and you have to spend five minutes fooling with the player in the middle of the movie, the movie experience suffers dramatically. However, because this happened infrequently, and mostly with rental movies, we just assumed it was because the rentals were all scratched up. After all, scratched cd's tend to have similar problems. Well, the DVD player started locking up more and more. Any the freeze "areas" of the movie started getting bigger- I recently watched a movie where I was unable to see over 5 minutes of footage, because it was all frozen or jerky. Doesn't sound like much, but hey, this isn't even supposed to happen, right? The guy at the movie store started looking at me funny for bringing back all these 'broken' DVDs... Then of course there is the Blue Screen Of Death (BSoD), common with some computer problems. Yeah, we got one of those too. We'd just be watching a movie, and it would freeze up. But instead of skipping, the screen goes blue and there is the C:13:00 (I think?) text in the bottom right hand corner. This, we thought, is not supposed to happen. When this happens, we have to eject the disk and put it back in. Very annoying. The most recent BSoD episode was even worse than usual: The DVD player went totally unresponsive. The eject button didn't work. The power button didn't work (yeah, I couldn't even shut the thing off). I actually had to turn off the system power bar (basically unplug the DVD player) and then re-power the unit to get the DVD out. This, we thought, is definitely not supposed to happen. So, in conclusion, I don't really know what to think. I'm a pretty reasonable person, and I like to think most other people are reasonable. I think that it is reasonable for there to be a few lemons in every batch of product, as this is just a fact of mass production and is totally acceptable. I had just assumed that my family had the misfortune of recieving one of these lemons, and due to our own lack of knowledge, did not rectify the problem while there was an opportunity to do so (Sony warranty period). This being the case, I came to the conclusion that the problems would just have to be accepted until a new unit could be bought. However... In light of the fact that there are hundreds of people out there experiencing similar problems with this product, it would appear that the problems are not a side effect of mass production but rather some type of design issue (as I have no relevent background with these devices, I have no idea what may be causing the problems, save that it probably isn't a manufacturing issue), the responsibility for which falls upon Sony. I believe that Sony should address this problem, for there is a problem. Such actions are the definition of good buisness. Similar Products Used: None! Wish I had though. |

Maybe you could find a cheep one on ebay. (mine) Optical digital out.
Weakness:
Sound quality is sub par. A hi-fi 4 head vcr sounds better. No DTS decoder. I bought this product about 2 and 1/2 to 3 years ago. I never ran into one single problem with the picture or sync on it maybe I was lucky. At the time I purchased it because the rest of my system was Sony. That was my first mistake. Shortly after purchasing the DVD player my 5 disk Sony changer broke. Then I ended up purchasing a very nice set of Infity speakers. After that I noticed the speaker seemed muddy so I replaced the Sony reciever with a Pioneer elite THT reciever. Then I noticed the speakers sounded 10x better. After changing the reciever over I noticed that the VCR sounded better than the Sony DVD player. I was not about to replace the DVD player since I just purchased it. Then I tryed to play cd's burned on a computer in cda format. No luck the dvd wouldn't even come close to playing them. Then recently I ran across a deal on a Pioneer Elite DVD player. After hearing this DVD player for a few hours I know I will never own another Sony product. Every Sony product I have owned seems to degrade the sound of my system or any system from what I can see. I have owned many Sony products from the Sony ES systems down and will never touch one again. I will however purchase Pioneer products again they are amazing. Just a thought on a very good alternative to Sony. ;o) Current System: Pioneer 39 THX Reciever Pioneer C36 DVD RCA HI-FI VCR Teac tape deck Zenith 36' TV Speakers: Infinity Crecendo 3007 BIC DV62 CLR-S Polk Sub PSW 650 Polk R15 Similar Products Used: none, will never own another similar product I hope. |

Easy of use
Weakness:
Has problems Class action law suit is now being filed against Sony for this unit. Used this unit casually (5 or 6 times a month) until it fell ill today, giving error code reading of E.30.00. It's a shame, didn't last three years without a glitch. Pity I purchased this when the technology was new because I only got about 2.75 years out of it ~$145 a year.... I don't think that's good enough! Similar Products Used: Comparing it to a CD-player which has almost the same mechanics, I have had CD-players fro Technics last over 10 years with more abuse hours that this Sony. |

Seems sony audio products, from boom-boxes to dvd player to receivers are flawed. Not sure if I should be glad that I am not the only one facling the C13:00 problems or angry at Sony for making such a bad product. Come to think of it I had bought a sony boom-box around 8 years ago and even that had similar problems skipping songs, stopping or going back to the beginning of the CD. If Sony had these problems from such a long time and not able to fix them, they should better stick to making walkmans. |

Lots of hours on this one as a cd transport and also abused as my family oriented themselves to my system. Excellent ergonomics, remote, and menus. Reads discs quickly. Great s-vhs picture Quality on Hitachi 53sdx01b. Cheap at time of purchase.
Weakness:
Very average CD player. Audio synch problem. *my orignal review contained the work "bi!ch" (synonymous with wine) but the obscenity meter caught it. I do not wish to abuse the privilege of posting to a fine site but is censorship appropriate here?* I was attempting to show off my home theater rig tonight but my dvps330 spoiled the show. My guests started to the notice synch error (as if yoda wasn't bad enough as is). I had only encountered this issue once before (auditioning the system for my sister). Anyhoo, I'm glad I'm not the only one who has had the problem. However, picture quality has been superb for the past 2 years (s-video) and I compared the unit with both sony's DVPNS7000 and JVC's 2001 cheap prog scan model using my mum as a tester. One really had to "look" for a better picture on the cheapie progressive units. The Sony will be replaced weds with a toshiba SD5700. Now, my 2 cents: I work for Circuit City and have lots of experience with ce. I cannot beleive that people wine about a $200 dvd player only lasting 2 years. people paid 1,000 for vcrs in the early 80s and rarely did they last more than 10 years. that's still $100 bucks a year for a video player. (ok inflation etc. but come on). Do i wish it was a better product? Yes! But at the end of the day it was the cheapest Sony available. WE did not buy high end. Research a new player and get over it. Sony still makes great dvd players (learning from mistakes maybe). This one wasn't too hot but if it lasted 2 years be glad. Receiver: Onkyo txds787 dvd1: sony dvps330 dvd2: apex ad5131 (for karoke!) dss: sony satb65 w/terk s23 dish vcr: phillips vr960 ld: sony mdp-500 monitor: hitachi 53sdx01b connects: monster, ixil, & gulp...rca!
