Strength:

Supports DTS (but doesn't do DTS decoding obviously). Solid picture.

Weakness:

Audio synching

Not that great of a deal for the price. I got the Toshiba 6109, which doubles as a receiver and does audio encoding for the $300. The Toshiba does not have the audio synch problem either.

The audio synching is an annoying but very sporadic problem.

Strength:

Great Player. Great Price. Best bang for the Buck.

Weakness:

Remote

Awesome player. I alsways liked Sony and the price was right on this player. Great features but the Remote has to be worked on. It was annoying at first when I had to turn on the light to see what I was doing. I'll get used to it though.

Other than the Remote, this thing rules.

Strength:

Excellent picture & sound quality. I've really enjoyed this player.

Weakness:

My biggest complaint is that it doesn't read CDR's. I talked to Sony, and they said that a next generation of their players should be able to play a CDR. Hopefully. Also, this model has a lip sync problem.

The lip sync problem is documeted with Sony. Generally, if you watch a movie all the way through, you won't notice the problem. But each time you pause and unpause the movie, it seems to knock the lip sync out. If you stop the movie, then restart it, it seems to re-establish the lip sync. I called their 800 number (1-800-282-2848) They had UPS come by, picked it up and returned it repaired within 10 days. They indicated some chips were replaced. I haven't had a problem since. Sony once again redeams it self as superior in customer service and products. I give it 4 stars because of the lack of support on CDR's.

When researching DVD players, I narrowed it down to the Sony DVP-S330 and the Panasonic A120. Both are about the same in price, functionality, and quality. I chose the Sony over the Panasonic only because I have other Sony components, and I wanted to remain compatible.

I have no complaints with the DVD player so far. I have watched over a dozen different movies, most of them rentals. I have had no difficulty with lip sync, freezing, or the like. The unit has delivered crisp pictures and awesome sound (through my Sony STR-DB930 receiver), giving me exactly what I had hoped for in terms of the DVD experience.

This unit is a great, cheap DVD player, and I would recommend it to anyone not needing an AC-3/DTS decoder onboard.

Strength:

Great universal remote, decent looking onscreen menus (although they could be a bit more detailed)

Weakness:

Poor manual...spend some money on the next one will ya? Lacks component output.

If you didn't notice, I'm from Canada. Land of strong beer, great backbacon, and electronics at full MSRP! We Canucks don't seem as fortunate when it comes to getting deals on our electronics. The Sony units are highly regarded, and are selling extremely well here. What this translates to is this: Every store I tried to buy my 330 from would not budge from the suggested retail price of $499.00 CDN. They gave all sorts of excuses, but the bottom line was that I paid a lot of money for this entry level player. Am I disappointed...not at all! This is a very good player. It has good construction, looks very nice sitting on my shelf, and has played every DVD I've thrown at it. I started to buy my DVD's quite awhile back, and have collected about 30. I have watched about half and have yet to see the audio sych problem that has plagued the earlier firmware models. Mine came with version 2.40. I chose this model over the more expensive 530 and 550 models because I have no need for the built-in decoder, nor the extra features(toys). This entry level machine gives me exactly what I want....a player that will play my DVD's, with no problems...and that is exactly what I got!

Even at $500 buck CDN I'll give it 5 Stars...nuff said

PS...The guy below me said that the 330 lacks composite outputs. It has 'em, I think he means component.

I am using this DVD player with the DSP A-1 amp by Yamaha and am impresed by the sound quality. I use the player for mostly music, but once in a while I use it for movies. It has treated me well.

Strength:

Picture, Sound

Weakness:

The only think I miss is that this model doesn't have jog shuttle, just buttons for forward and reverse (but it does have two speeds for each of those).

After reading as much as I could stand to on this model, and several others, I decided to go with the 330 and have not been disappointed at all. I was a little hesitant because of the dreaded lip-synch problem, but I have not noticed it yet (and hopefully never will). I have just learned from reading here how to check the firmware version and mine is 2.21. I hope that this is a new enough version to correct the problem, but haven't seen anything definitive on this.

Other than that, I really have no complaints. I'm only using a 27" Trinitron, but I think the picture looks better than what I saw in the stores. And although I don't have DD surround (yet) the DVD sound just blows away VHS.

I wasn't too concerned with not having built in DD/DTS converters, as I would prefer to have that in the receiver, where one decoder can work for DVD, DBS, etc.

This is a great entry-level machine, and a great value ($239 from Supreme Audio+Video) that will definitely be sufficient until HDTV changes everything.

Strength:

Great picture/sound! Top notch remote control. Optical out.

Weakness:

Doesn't have the all the bells and whistles of higher priced units.

This is a rock solid player for the money. I paid $269 and could not be happier. It has firmware version 2.300 and after approximately 10 movies, I've seen no evidence of any lip sync problems. And contrary to what other reviews below might say, it does in fact have both s-video *and* RCA jacks for the video out. The transport mechanism is absolutly silent and fast, and the loading/access time is very quick. I would buy this unit again and would reccomend it to anyone wanting a low cost player with rock solid performance.

Good Picture and sound quality. Good Price

Weakness:

Audio Sinc

Thus far I have been pleased with player. Like most, this is my first DVD player and really I did not know what to expect. I was quite surprised in the picture and sound quality of this machine. The remote and operation of this player is quite user friendly. However, I have noticed that the picture and sound have been out of sinc on at least two movies; "Life" (Eddie Murphy & Martin Lawrence)both rented and purchased copies as well as "Next of Kin". Up until reading the reviews on this post I just assumed that is was the DVD's and not the player. I paid only $330 for this machine and presently I'm still using a (Sony STR-DE905G) pro-logic reciever with plans to upgrade soon!! I would definetly recommend this machine.

Strength:

Good Price. Good set of outputs. Slim form factor.

Weakness:

For this price, none really.

Well I had this unit for almost 1 year now. So far everything is still working great. Sound and picture are terrific. You get about a one second pause when the disc switches layers, but that is about it. Most movies you don't even notice (just depends when where they cut the film). For the price I would highly recommend the player.
No complaints.
