GOOD NEWS! There is a class action lawsuit being prepared as we speak. It''s about time that Sony pays up for a terrible product. |

Strength:
Sony does not care that they are losing a lifetime (18 yr) customer. They are in denial regarding this manufacturing defect
Weakness:
The cost of the parts alone to repair this chronic problem is $150. Give me a freaking break. I''ll replace this unit with anything but Sony. I''ll never spend another dollar on a Sony product. Color me as yet another ANGRY and FRUSTRATED soon-to-be ex-sony customer. I''ve read hundreds of negative reviews on this product. It is as if these people live in my home and know exactly what I have experienced. First, lots of skipping and freezing. Then "NO DISC" readings. My DVD''s are immaculate. This is a manufacturing defect. I spoke with an authorized service center in Lawrence, KS. They advised me that this was a design flaw (inadequate cooling). If you own one that works, get some pc fans blowing into the top of the unit and it might survive. |

Strength:
The neat blue screen with the Sony logo still comes on to remind me of the company that I''m never doing business with again.
Weakness:
It doesn''t play discs at all. It is always nice to find a club to belong to. Count me in with the 400+ rest of you who got the c13:00 message and then "no disc" I had my machine for 18 months before its untimely death. See you at the class action suit party. |

Strength:
None - it does not work.
Weakness:
It is junk. Add me to the c:1300 error list. I bought the machine in August 2000. I''ve had a few intermittent errors all along but it died totally on Christmas day of 2001 (16 months). I''m trying to contact Sony. |

Strength:
Decent picture while it worked. One of the better remotes on the market for this price range.
Weakness:
When it''s dead, it''s dead! Changes the view of formerly loyal Sony buyers. I hate to jump on the bandwagon, but this unit has changed the way I view Sony. I own the Sony 53HS10 HDTV Monitor (which I am still happy with) and the DVP 360, which was to be a starter unit that was going to be moved to bedroom duty after I saved up for a progressive scan player. I was thinking about the 9000ES, but now I’ll never buy a Sony electronics product again. Approximately one year after purchase, I started getting the c13:00 error. One month to the day after the first error message, the "no disc" message appeared. Now I can’t even play a CD! Of course, no solutions were available from the Sony CSR’s. I echo the statements on this forum to start a class action suit. If anyone knows of a class-action lawyer out there looking to make a name for themselves by suing one of the largest corporations around (along with making a little $ on the way), I’ll gladly add my name to the list. |

Strength:
Keeps paperwork from falling off my computer desk.
Weakness:
Retractable cupholder only works when unit is plugged into the wall. I wrote up this POS a while ago, and I thought I''d post an update. While I am still able to play single-layer dvd''s and cd''s, it still chokes on all my dual-layer discs. After running calibration after calibration, I finally gave up yesterday and pulled it from the rack. (*plays taps*) I assume 95% of the readers here will be looking for a suitable replacement very soon. Allow me to suggest the Panasonic DVD-RA60. Circuit City has it for $199, Best Buy lists it at $229. The RA60 doesn''t have progressive scan, but I don''t plan on upgrading to a digital tv anytime soon, so what do I care about progressive scan? The feature that is important to me is DVD-Audio capability (which also requires a compatible receiver though). DVD-Audio should turn Sony''s SACD into the next Minidisc. As for the compatible receiver, how about Consumer Reports'' Best Value picks, the Technics SA-DX 950 or 1050? They run for $150 to $230. There are better receivers out there, but certainly not for the price. I''ve gotten exceptional performance out of every other Technics brand equipment I own, from tape deck, to single cd player, to 61-cd changer, to pro-logic receiver. Panasonic and Technics are both owned by the same parent company, so hopefully that is a good sign. In light of all this, I am going to write a "Thank You" note to Sony, for making such a cruddy DVD player. Thanks to them, I got all this new neat home theater gear from Technics! Never p_ss off an audio buff. You will lose their business forever! Similar Products Used: Panasonic DVD-RA60 Pioneer DV440 (no dvd-audio, but still solid) |

Strength:
they obviously did a good job of selling this unit judging by the number of post
Weakness:
poor design, picture quality I''ve had two of these now and they both broke within a year. I returned the 1st one now the replacement is broke. 1st one got no disk error on any disk second plays a movie 3/4 of the way through and starts skipping in the last 1/4 of the movie so its unplayable. It would have been a ify unit even if it didnt have break-down problems. |

sleak, nice remote although a bit big,
Weakness:
bad design, cooling problems unit gets too hot causing trouble, not a good sony prouduct in my book PS2 does better on playing dvds! ok ok well i have had my share of trouble with this prouduct.C 13''s no disk and freezing in movies nearing the end!but i have used this prouduct for 8 months before 1st problems started, about 500 hours of playtime.then i seem to have fixed all problems with it except the noisey drive!i would not have bought this knowing i had to redesign it...but aany way the cheap fix is put 3 inch blocks of wood under each leg to promote better airflow coolingbottom does not get hot anymore..i did that for about 3 months and had flawless preformance 2. witch is what i eventually did was install 2 4 inch pc fans on either side of the drive blowing down from top cover held in by a prouduct called jb weld no screw marks that way!and now i have it sitting normally on my entertainment center working flawlessly about 1200 hours of use since then!!! Picture, Sound
Weakness:
None, no slow motion feature... I can''t believe how bad people are panning this player!! All I can say is that mine has played GREAT for more than a year. It has great picture and sound through my Yamaha RXV995 and Boston Acoustics 950''s. I bought mine towards the end of 2000, I think it was released around then. My kids watch movies on it ALL day EVERY day, and no problems! I mean, they can watch Shrek or Toy Story 5 times in one day, or at least it''s playing the living room. I have never had any problems, thankfully, but would not recommend getting one anymore! I just wanted to put it out there that the early productions may have been better than the later ones. Quality is good when it works
Weakness:
C:13 errors repeatedly Unit was working OK for about a year. I experienced some ocassional "skips" but I figured that it was just a characteristic of DVD players. Then I started getting the dreaded "C:13" errors. Now I cannot even watch some of my disks. I even placed a brand new DVD in the unit and still got the C:13! Sony should take responsibility for this issue. If there is a class action on the horizon, count me in! Similar Products Used: Many Sony products-TV, Receivers, VCR, etc. |
